A 5 foot legnth of thick walled 2"pipe swung at the tires sidewall like a baseball bat (fully inflated tire swung at the outboard side) will usually pop those stuck wheels fairly quickly and easily within a few swings. Left hand lugs!! I worked in my fathers auto & tire shop from 1979 onward. I dealt with a bunch of left handed threads on Mopars. Also steel wheels, hubcaps of all kinds, original cragars and mags, split-rims, hot-rods, etc., etc... There were still plenty of cars around with bias ply tires that we switched to radials. For the rusted rims we would put them on a lift and use a sledge hammer and maybe some wd-40. If not then the torch a bit for some heat or then finally disassemble.

That is why you are smarter than them, you snatch the work order from the dumbass taking it and write legibly, attention, left hand thread, left side, YOU BREAK THEM,, THIS SHOP IS AND WILL BE HELD LIABLE FOR YOUR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE, sign it, date it, pic with phone! Take them to court over that crap, Make them order correct parts, charge them like they would you, Gets somewhat expensive, but they will be more apt to be careful.
@Tommy_Mac3 жыл бұрын
I used this trick on a Ford- reinstall the lugnuts. Leave them about one turn loose. Drive the car slowly in a circle, right then left (or the opposite, doesn't matter). The weight of the car will break the hub/drum/lugs/wheel, rust bonded, interface. Really easy. Works better if you have brake shoes and working brakes. Hitting the brake hard a couple of times with the lugs loosened will also work, sometimes.

Surprised to see it was just a single brake cylinder in the front being it's a full size car. The 1962 Chrysler Saratoga I had in the late sixties had two brake cylinders in the front, one on top and one in the bottom. Had lots of problems with them in our salty climate up here. They were manually adjusted and always all rusted up, a real PITA. Thanks for all the great videos. Best Regards - Mike

When I was 15 I bought my 1963 Fury, still have her. I tried with all my might but I couldn't loosen the lugs. I learned about left hand threads the hard way that day.

Nice solid bones, alright. That sway bar isn't beefy by modern standards but back in the day, man... Truly heavy duty and a far cry better than no bar as most cars of that time were. Looking forward to the further tear-down and progress on this car. I remember an old magazine that a buddy gave me where they tested a 2 X 4 bbl 413, possibly in a car like this. It was around 30-40 degrees at the time and the car was not happy with the climate. It ran like a pig for the first half hour of drive time, they said it ate oil steadily, but hey - that was the way it was set up, loose and over-carbed for fall daily driving.

Had a few of those that rust welded the drum to the wheel like that. It usually is the point where the spindle goes thru the rim that gets locked up. Nothing a little penetrating oil and heat persuasion won't fix. Also I would suggest using hard soled shoes for kicking the wheel. Moccasin type house shoes are hard on the feet for doing that.
@ClaremontClassicGarage3 жыл бұрын
I worked on buses, the wheels would get so stuck that we'd loosen all the nuts about 2 turns and go for a drive around the yard. Eventually it would go BANG then the wheel would come off. Otherwise it would be a long day.

Next time Pro Tip: With a simple MAPP or Propane torch (hardware store) Heat in a circular motion around the outside edge of the lug ring and the differential expansion of the heated metals will pop the rust and making it easier to remove.
