Hi Gabi, please please please make a video on how we can reverse damage caused by keratin treatments. FYI, I had thick waist length wavy black hair. Living in a hot and humid country my hair is quite frizzy and unmanageable. I was advised keratin smoothening treatment by the stylist which *apparently* improves the frizzy dry texture. Well, it did but only temporarily. And over time and repeated keratin smoothening treatments (I used to colour and refresh it every 7-8 months over 5yrs) my hair texture has actually become horrible. I've lost copious amounts of hair and it's now a frizzy dull mess. I've chopped off more than 5" of length but the problem persists. Please advise how I can salvage the damage and any alternative treatments to improve on the frizz and dullness.

Omg I have a super short pixie, and my hair grows in so fast, so I’m constantly battling grey roots. My hair is black (think goth chick lol) so I have roots coming in every 2 weeks. So I dye every two weeks with Revlon Colorsilk. I do add in a blob of Olaplex 3 and shake it into my dye , and just use half box per dye job. I use a good quality salon shampoo and conditioner. I also put jojoba oil in my hair after every towel dry, and use no heat styling. I’ve been lucky so far, but see no damage. My hair is as shiny as glass, and super soft.

Gosh we have such a better range of hair dyes in the UK! Box dyes are so good over here, the boxes are so much easier to understand. Over here it wouldn’t say “11” it would say “1.1”… so you know it means something. Amazing video this is how I dye my mum’s hair. I just do the roots then dye the rest with semi permanent dyes, always have. I remember making my own dye using directions and crazy colour because I always wondered why you could buy red or pink vegetable dye but not brown. Now in 2022 these are all the rage and every big brand is bringing loads of toners for at home use. There’s so many. From new brands to existing ones, manic panic etc, they all have brown options now. It’s basically conditioner with colour as you say. Tresemme do a decent hair mask range too. And they’re cheap.

I used to use the box mix ,but I realized I could use better products with a little education.. now using Chi colors in several shades & a level 10 developer for roots lowlights. I then use frost & tip for highlights. By purchasing the color at Sally's & only mixing what I need my cost is under 5$ per use. Older hair needs multi dimensions for sophistication & movement!

I just love you Gabi! I appreciate you giving instructions on how to DIY. I started cutting my own hair at 12 years old. Scary, I know, but I'm 65 now and have been cutting mine and other's hair ever since. Almost went to beauty school, but it didn't work-out. Anyway, I have a natural understanding about how the "hair world" works. I've been getting 2 to 3 applications from my box dye for many years and felt I was doing it right since it always came-out okay, but you actually covered it here and it made me so happy so know that I wasn't crazy to think of doing it in the first place. Actually it is the ALKALIZER ( Ammonia or Ethanolamine ) that raises the pH and swells the hair opening the cuticle. The Developer ( Peroxide ) does TWO JOBS #1 it develops the color, changing the smaller colorless molecules into larger, colored molecules by adding to them and / or joining two or more together and these larger molecules become trapped in the hair. #2 it OXIDIZES the natural pigment ( Melanins ) to make it colorless so the hair becomes lighter. Box dyes contain a STANDARD FORMULA that works for most hair types and contains 20 Volume Developer for MOST SHADES some BLONDE SHADES Contain 25 or 30 Volume to increase lift ( Lightening ) and also some RED SHADES to increase vibrancy. Demi-Permanent Colors contain a lower pH Colorant without Ammonia and a 10 Volume Developer to prevent lifting or lightening the natural color and can be used to refresh color between retouches. Glosses and Semi-Permanent dyes are low pH formulas with highly diffused colorants that penetrate the hair easily but also diffuse out easily so they only last a few shampoos.
@GlamGirlGabi2 жыл бұрын
Wooooah who are you? How do you know all of this? This was an amazing explanation. As far as I knew, most box dyes contained 30 vol but I learned all about it several years ago and things are ALWAYS changing in hair.

for me if I use box dye I just oil my ends or something similar for porosity and then I check to see what volume I got with the box which is usually a 25V or 30V and I generally just dilute the developer with conditioner to get somewhere around 5-10 volume depending on the deposit I need and save the remainder of the undiluted developer in a separate sealed bottle.

Thank you! You can apply a color gloss on the damp hair after you shampoo out the permanent or if you want, you can apply it from the place where the permanent color stops to the ends while the permanent color processes. The only thing is that you will use more color gloss if you apply it on dry hair (but I also find it will last longer and be richer when applied on dry hair too.)

Hi Gabi. l have a question for you, but first i want to tell you how much i LOVE your channel. l can tell you genuinely want to help us gals. And you are so through in your explanations. l have learned so much from you. Now the question. l never ever shampoo my hair after dying it. l just use the conditioner that comes in the box after the dying process. The box directions tell us to NOT shampoo after dying. But i saw that you did shampoo after dying in the video. Why does the box say not to shampoo?
@irishcanuck94892 жыл бұрын
As a retired hairdresser: you should always shampoo your hair after it has processed, it stops the chemical action and removes the chemicals. All semi permanent (or demi) have peroxide just a lower volume, its the peroxide that reacts to the colour pigment and causes oxidization. I always shampooed semi permanent/and or toners (same thing). Use a colour shampoo! Toners can be applied after the roots are finished applying then process together (semi permanent take less processing time) then rinse/shampoo together. Toners or semi permanent only deposit, not enough peroxide strength to lift (3-10% volume). The toner she used had a gloss or shine to it and is why she applied it roots to ends after rinsing/shampooing roots (we call regrowth). We have gloss we can add to colours. You must be careful with box colour, it is a different chemical compound, and more damaging than salon colour (box colour conditioners are excellent). Lorelle is the only box colour I found to be the same as professional lines. Also all box colours use 20 volume peroxide (permanent) which will lift and deposit but only up to 2 levels. That's why she said read the box guide on the side. There is a reason women walk around with hot roots, or wrong brazzy colours, demarcation lines because they are trying to achieve a lighter colour than 20 v will give, and/ or they are depositing too much pigment on either blonde, grey or damaged hair. Salon colour uses up to 40V peroxide. There is actually a science to it! Black and brown box colour is difficult to remove and most times it can't be completely removed enough even with bleaching without severe damage, and toning doesn't achieve the ultimate goal either. So you will end up with different pigment levels in the hair (demarcation lines). Box colour builds up, this is why she showed you a root retouch (with permanent) with a gloss toner (semi permanent) and is less of a colour build up and easier to remove). That's why hairdressers will ask you what's in your hair (box colour or professional colour, bleach then coloured over). So good luck if you want high lights later if you are applying box "permanent" colour roots to ends everytime! We have products we put in bleach to protect the hair from damage. A colour tech hairdresser will always change the formula or peroxide volume for different shaft zones and to prevent demarcation lines, hot roots, brazzy tones, and colour build up etc. That's what you pay for at the salon, their knowledge, expertise! Not every hairdresser is a colour tech either, some only know basic techniques! Even permanent colour fades within 6 weeks, begins fading around 3 weeks. Sun, chlorine, harsh shampoos (high alkaline), will cause it to fade faster, and damaged, dry hair will fade faster. Keep it well conditioned! I always told women who messed their hair up with box colour and wanted my free advise and time to tell them how to correct it to call either 1-800 Miss Clarole or 1-800 Nice N Easy.

Love this video. This is what I do when I colour my hair. My hair is very thick too and one time I stupidly bought only one box of root touch up and it wasn’t enough for my roots. Luckily enough I started at the hairline and got all the visible parts done but had to do the back with another box so I always buy one box of regular box colour in a black or blue black colour and that does me for my roots then I use a blue black semi permanent colour for mid lengths and ends. Only a few times a year will I use a quasi permanent colour on my ends as I find over time colour washes out of my hair and I need a stronger refresh. My hair is the healthiest it’s ever been with me regularly colouring my roots. I do my roots once a month 💕💕

It's definitely the constant overlapping with box dye that does the damage. Your client has such beautiful thick hair and the color turned out amazing. I got a balayage recently because I don't want to constantly dye my hair every few weeks...best decision ever. It was worth the money. I dyed my hair with salon color and it was quite dark- but it lifted very well and evenly. My stylist was surprised how well it turned out. She told me it was very likely because it was professional color on my hair and not box dye. Box dye can be difficult to bleach- just keep that in mind.
@GlamGirlGabi2 жыл бұрын
Yes overlapping leads to really dry and inky hair over time. I also LOVE my balayage for the same reason. I love how low maintenance it is! I agree that box dye can be difficult to remove but I wonder how difficult it is compared to professional color when you’re working on the same swatch of hair - one dyed with box and one dyed with professional color. Ooooh I feel a video idea brewing!!!

Is it bad to shampoo hair after permanent coloring? I heard that shampooing right after can cause the toner to fade faster but am not sure if this is true or not🙂 I do my moms hair and she has lots of grey hair near the root and use permanent color with 20 vol developer from Sally’s btw!
@GlamGirlGabi2 жыл бұрын
You’re doing a perfect job picking 20vol. That’s the developer volume that you need for grey coverage. Are you making sure that your pigment has an N tone in it? You need natural (N) pigment to cover grey with 20vol. Shampooing does cause toners to fade because toners only stain the cuticle layer of the hair. The more you wash it, the more it will fade. However, I don’t think it’s necessarily essential to wait before shampooing. You do have to shampoo your permanent color out of the hair as a step in the colouring system though.

I have dark hair naturally and I’ve started getting grays so I touch up my roots myself. I will sometimes get balayage at a salon but will continue to do my own roots. When I redo my roots, the color deposits onto the balayage. I’ve tried wetting the highlights while doing my roots but the color still seems to deposit. I’ve also put conditioner on the highlights while coloring and this seems to help but it has still deposited some into the highlights. How can I touch up my roots without depositing that color into any highlights? Thank you so much! ❤️

Hi! I'm enjoying all of the information you teach us! Thank you. I'm wondering though, why isn't there any proper red on the hair color spectrum? My hair is naturally red. Where do I fit in? Thx!

Depends whether you're auburn, ginger, strawberry blonde, etc.

Question, I have natural thick porous soft black hair. Ive been dying it soft black just on the roots to cover my grey hair. A year from now i plan to have my hair bleached to go pink. Will my box dyes or glossing treatments cause potential lifting issues or should i just deal with the random grey hairs in the mean time?

I just discovered your channel. Very informative. I have to box dye my roots in between highlights/dyes due to $$ job loss. Lots of gray forces = every four weeks. I’ve gone a lot more blonde on those highlights to help hide that gray in the med brown hair per hairstylist suggestion. I loved that gloss you used. Is there anything like this for light hair?? PS my stylist puts in these beautiful multiple blonde highlight on my med brown now mostly gray hair, but I cannot afford this every month. Plus she’s learned keratin treatments because my hair has so much damage from processing ❤️❤️. That’s not inexpensive either.

Question: So…you can shampoo your hair after you just dyed your hair??? My box dye that I’ve used for years says to just rinse it out. I then shampoo my hair two days later to ensure the dye stays longer. Is this wrong?

THANK YOU. I have naturally black hair, but the hair on top that gets more sunlight leans more towards a dark brown. I've been using permanent color for years as a solution, but it builds up on the rest of my hair so I stopped. Now I will try the toner gloss method. I can't wait to try this on my mom too.

Seriously - THE best hair channel KZbin! Could I do something like this for red hair? The reason I box dye is because I haven’t had a colorist come anywhere close to the desired red (I could keep trying new colorists, but I’ve experienced some horror stories, and the box dye gives me the exact color every time in just 20 min!) and it would cost me a small fortune to go that often (especially in San Francisco…) That being said, I absolutely WOULD pay a small fortune if the red was totally on point!

I am a redhead also and feel your pain. What box colour do you use? I am going to try it. I am a copper brown. Impossible to get in a salon. I have tried about 6 in the last 1.5 years, none can pull it off.

Thanks Gabi for this information. I don’t have any grey. I am using Superior Preference by L’Oréal. Color 9A Light Ash Blonde with Fade-Defying Color Shine system. I like the color and look. Would like to continue using with out damage to my hair. This color last eight weeks. But for me it lasts longer. Should I use the same technique that you used on this video. Thank you.
@GlamGirlGabi2 жыл бұрын
Yes! You should try it! L’Oréal Le Color Gloss has a beautiful option for an ash blonde. I actually did another video on that exact color if you want to see how it goes on and what the end result looks like. Take a look in my Box Dye playlist to see it. :) Thanks for watching. :)

Any tips for natural redheads that want to enhance their color with box dye that have a lot of mixed tones in their hair…to make it look as natural as possible. I have a mix of different shades of red, copper and blonde depending on how much sun I’ve been getting.
@GlamGirlGabi2 жыл бұрын
Ooooh your hair is my favorite. I LOVE that combination of colors. It’s so gorgeous. I would only use a direct dye gloss on your hair and avoid permanent colors. A red gloss will enhance your tone and make the red brighter but won’t change it forever. I haven’t looked into red glosses but I can have a look next time I am at the store and see what I can find for you.

@Cherriezzz haha I like your name, my nickname is Cherriz and what I sign on my art. Yeah, love it when I’m out in the sun and you get the strands that look like straight up tinsel. But also, the sun is evil!! 😒😆 Wish I would of known about hair sunscreen when I was younger. What I get for being the only redhead in my family. 😑

Love the tips Gabbi, the gloss toner I didn't know about that part, I used to do all the hair bit now I just do my roots and under Neath , the rest of the hair still has the dark blonde colour I applied before so that's good, I'll try the gloss toner next time ,do you need to get the same colour gloss toner as the box dye Eg : dark blonde I use!! Thnks! 👍

I tend to add one teaspoon of castor oil to my box dye and I don't spread the dye through out until the last 5 minutes of root touching up.
@rosannabishop76032 жыл бұрын
Hi...may I ask why the castor oil....I'm trying to learn how to color my hair and also I'm assuming you spread the dye through out the last 5 minutes because that keeps the hair from drying out....correct? I want shiny/healthy hair and I now have quite a bit of gray. I was having the salon to mix dark brown and a burgandy color together to get the color I love. I NOW cut my own hair in a shag and do a much better/neater job than the salon. Now, trying so hard to learn how to color and keep my hair very healthy. Please reply! Thanks!

@@rosannabishop7603 Hi! I'm 54 now, almost entirely gray. My hair is thin, very fine, dry and naturally curly/wavy, used to be medium to dark ash blond with orange undertone when dying. You got it quite right - the oil of your personal choice (could be almond, olive...anything you feel is right for your hair) is added in order to protect and nourish the hair during box dying process. Castor oil is great for new hair growth, for thickening, so I use it not just for my hair, but for my eyelashes and nails as well. Natural remedy that usually gives great results if hair, lashes, brows or nails need volume and strength. Since I rarely change box dye that I use, I just do my roots/touch ups with slight color refreshing - once the dye is spread throughout, it doesn't take more than 5 minutes to do the trick, evens out and refreshes the color from roots to the ends. For my hair, Garnier Olia is the least invasive and drying among box dye options that I've tried. Generally, for me, Garnier is less drying than L'oreal. If you prefer extra shine, Schwarzkopf is good option or L'Oreal Ferria. Best of luck! Stay safe! XO

@@blueice011 Thank you so much for all your help. I have a question about the eye lashes. Do you just put the caster oil on your lashes at night to make them thicker and grow. I have a friend that gets something and I don't have a clue what she buys, but was just thinking about asking her. I do remember she said it was quite expensive, but believe me her eye lashes were incredibly long (unbelieveable). I didn't mention anymore to her because at the time I was wearing contacts, but just recently went to eye glasses. If the castor oil makes them thicker and longer then I'll just do that to save money. Anything I need to know to protect my eyes? Thanks again for all your time, you're awesome. God bless and stay safe!
@blueice0112 жыл бұрын
@@rosannabishop7603 It's a pleasure! :) Yes, castor oil makes eyelashes thicker and longer, to me it's a natural and affordable option that gives good results, but it can get into the eyes. I'm trying to be very careful with my application - used to apply the oil with clean mascara brush (short silicon bristles), now I'm using clean fingers for application before going to bed, so that treatment stays on my lashes overnight. If my eyes are a bit blurry in the morning and washing my face with water doesn't do the trick, I tend to use eye drops. Hope this helps! So nice chatting with you! God bless and stay safe! All the very best! XO

This is a great video, thank you! I’m going to be 36 next month and just started dying my hair due to grays 😩 Ugh. I prefer to go to the salon because I’d rather not damage my hair. I’ve got it done twice at the salon so far snd I did use a box dye once to hold me until I can get in. Luckily it was easy to match my color because I just have dark brown hair. So I just grabbed the one that said dark brown. It didn’t say the undertone tho. Most people think my hair is black. My profile pic here is my natural color before it’s ever been dyed. Would you say it’s neutral? In the sun light there’s some red in it. I’m not sure if that matters. I can’t even tell what my skin’s under tone is ugh. If I didn’t have grays I wouldn’t even dye it. My hair hair breaks and it falls out probably from my medical condition. It sucks. If I straighten my hair you can see how thin it actually is. At least with my natural curls it doesn’t look too thin.

Glam girl Gabi, i have been dying my hair in the salon with the blue black Color for years. If i want to go back to brown, do i have to strip my hair off the black? Or can i just dye it straight with the brown? Thank you!

Box hair dyes make it sound like you DON"T want to wash directly after a color...only to rinse with "their" conditioner. Can we wash with a Color Safe Shampoo? I've used L'Oreal in the past....most recently, I've purchased Matrix hair color and use a 20 Volume Creme Developer...it is very difficult to wash the Creme developer from my long hair...so I'd love tips on this as well!
