I doubt that that anyone forgets that. Ox was also the reason the Boks won an England Scrum close to their own tryline. That was the momentum swing that made England lose the game. One of the greatest scrummagers and looseheads in history.

As someone who played Prop, I can you: we had to be fittest on the team. We had to be present at every breakdown, lift at every lineout, be ready for any scrum. So much work had to be done that no one wanted to play the position. Props rarely get the credit they deserve.

Ox, PSDT and Kolbe have been phenomenal and deserve to share player of the year. That said, you’re spot on wrt props and the bloody IRB that want to downplay scrums… but that’s another story. Back to props… Ox reminds me so much of Os du Randt, and ironically both nicknames are “Ox”. They both would have been worthy. It is surprising that Carl Hayman, Os Du Randt, Beast, and Malherbe have never been nominated. Rather disappointing that Fourie Du Preez never won the award either when you listen to Gregan (surprising he never won it either), Marshall etc. as well as the other players who played with him or against him. Further interesting Stats: Argentina: 2 nominations Australia: 15 nominations England: 13 nominations; 1 winner France: 9 nominations; 3 winners Italy: 2 nominations Ireland: 13 nominations; 3 winners New Zealand: 31 nominations; 11 winners (3 players who won it multiple times) Scotland: 2 nominations South Africa: 19 nominations; 3 winners (Etzebeth received his 2 nominations 10 years apart) Wales: 5 nominations; 1 winner While New Zealand dominates this list it is surprising that only 3 players from South Africa (19/3), Australia (15), Argentina (2) have won it. 36 total southern hemisphere nominations bar NZ. All together, 14 wins from 67 nominations. Northern hemisphere had 8 winners from 45 nominations. Nominations: SH 67 (60%) vs NH 45 (40%) Winners: SH 14 (64%) vs NH 8 (36%) Take NZ's clear dominance (outlier) out of the equations makes for interesting reading: Nominations: SH 36 (44%) vs NH 45 (56%) Winners: SH 3 (27%) vs NH 8 (73%) Removing NZ shows a bizarre anomaly, considering South Africa and Australia have been top 5 nations for over 2 decades. While overall the stats will show southern hemisphere dominance, removing NZ, it reveals some favoritism toward the European countries.

How many critical scrums have the Boks had in their half (I can think of a very controversial one this past WC!) where the pack has pulled the get out of jail card. Couple that with his open field play, I think he is one of the the most valuable players in the Bok team.

Since I watch the Premier League (MU!!), although I think the French 14 is the best League in rugby, the URC has come of age and is giving class rugby, full stands and money in the game and really awesome games. The Irish four regions play absolutely farosios rugby as they going to war I mud and rain almost killing each other and then smiling and handshakes all around. I agree with Doris, It's like SA going to NZ and winning. Player of the year Ox would be a great choice but there is no rugby player on earth standing higher than PSTD at the moment, he is beyond great in our current time.
