Givenchy Haute Couture Spring/Summer 1997 (Alexander McQueen)

Until today i have no idea why there was so much bad criticism towards this collection back then. Considering it was 23 years ago is so ahead of its time, wearable and full of creativity. A true masterpiece. If it was created today it would have sold out and seen in all red carpet events with movie and pop stars.

It wasn't the collection that was criticised for being but it was more McQueen's application of the couture methods, some dresses were decorated using gold spray paint, some of the cut on the jackets were sloppy and not perfectly suited like his signature tailoring skills, this is a big no no in couture because thousands of hours and money are to be spent to impress the rich clients. The headdress and hairstyles did not help either because they took the shine from his brilliant cuts. However the critics were so critical and harsh to McQueen collection without giving a benefit of a doubt because this was his very first time doing haute couture.

Wow Eva Hertzegova and Naomi are rightful Goddesses here. And this show was when I saw Stella Tennant as a supermodel for the first time. And Helena was just perfect here as well. Manaquins.

This is fashion that feels intimidating and impressive, the whole scenery and the models performances are outstanding. Also love the psychotic music and the mythological influence in the presentation! I think this is my favorite show.

Wow. I got goosebumps watching this. Absolutely beautiful. Every piece and the presentation was beyond expectations. The few jealous critics who called it costume must be eating their spiteful words today. I would have given it a standing ovation. Bravo Alexander McQueen. Thanks for the chills.

Thank you !!!! There was so much drama and theatre then, just the right amount, showcasing each individual model's distinct personality which so complimented the dresses. Such incredible synergy between all the art forms from hair, make up to set, direction and music. The audience clapping was such a spirited effect. I just love this. I miss this. Oh, Lee, he was so young... So true to his art and mission. The industry sucks but his legacy is the soul of the art which births the industry.

AM could have won ever design fashion award. As such it would seem, industry insiders who were known to him personally, would have liked to throw him a retirement party well into his old age, unfortunate they did not get the chance. Even so if it did not give him years added to his career as a designer, these collections alone are a lifetime of accolades, achievement and success. Really remarkable! 👏👏👏

This collection was basically a blend of Mugler, Galliano and Gaultier. I don't understand how anyone with a knowledge of haute couture in the 1990s could think this was amazing. Sure, some pieces on their own were nice but when you realise they were highly derivative of the work of other designers, they were not praiseworthy.
