Givenchy Spring 2022 Runway Review

Since his appointment as a creative director at Givenchy, Matthew Williams hasn't been having an easy ride at the brand. Despite aggressive celebrity marketing, Givenchy's recent collections received little positive acclaim from the public. However, Matthew Williams managed to surprise the most critical fashion enthusiasts with his third Ready-To-Wear release in collaboration with an artist Josh Smith.

Still very Tisci-esque. The styling was on point because it was styled by Panos Yiapanis. Who styled every Tisci Givenchy show and Rick Owens shows from his first runway show. I did enjoy the experimentation with textiles and footwear. Do all LVMH designers have to collaborate with artists every season?

mmw designs perfectly align with my language of expression through clothes, like you said, sharp but elegant. something ive noticed is that alyx and givenchy have been getting some cross references in their items lately, which i definitely am not complaining!

THIS! I feel like in the beginning Matthew was trying way too hard to make Givenchy as different from Alyx as possible, going into the directions that felt forced and unnatural, but as soon as he calmed down and relaxed (???) the designs changed for better in both brands!

It’s just seeking the same customer as Kim’s Dior but it’s worse, overall I think he is doing a good job but there are just so many better designers to buy first

I don't think that it's objectively worse than Kim's Dior. Most of the pieces are very wearable and designs are fairly distinct, it's just that the reputation of Givenchy hasn't been the greatest recently and it will take some time to appeal to the young audience again (although, we are not the ones bringing them money, we are just the loudest haha)
