For the person who asked about being an English major for law school-that’s actually one of the best majors you can have for law school because it gives you a lot of skills you need but sets you apart from other people in the application process!! I’m pretty sure English and philosophy were some of the highest accepted for law school
@Caitlinm0076 жыл бұрын
Specifically, you work on critical reading skills, interpretation of written text, forming an argument, communications. All important things for your law degree. From one English Major to another: English is one of the most versatile degrees out there, but I understand how frustrating it can be for people not to realize it.

Leannuh Renee Leannuh Renee It is breaking confidentiality, if you hadn’t set the precedence in the past that it would be okay for her to acknowledge you in public. It’s an ACA standard set to protect you in case you don’t want people to know you’re in therapy.

@thelynndiaries6 жыл бұрын
1:59 i would say yes because the therapist would be biased and more likely to give their opinions/advice rather than providing the right questions and support in order for you to find solutions to your problems within yourself. this is why seeing a therapist can be more helpful that seeking advice from friends or family; because you get to see your situation from an outsiders perspective.

To answer Mamrie's question, no a therapist cannot have someone they know as a client. It's called a dual relationship and is discouraged in the field. I'm a therapist in training right now and I loved this episode! Keep up the good work guys! :) Also therapists don't give out advice to avoid being sued.

I had a 3.9 and graduated with honors and applied to B+ grad schools and still was denied by 6/7! Grad school is insane. Remember that you are going from being the big fish in a small pond to being in a crowd of salmon trying to swim across a flooded highway 🙃 it’s not you, friend! Some schools accept less than 10 people! 1/5 is far from over! Have hope and trust that you put your best out there and what will happen will be right for you. There is always another option. 💙

Actual advice for English major!!! English majors have been statistically proven to do better on the LSATS then prelaw majors and because of this tend to get into better law schools. In addition, being so used to readings hundreds of pages a week and understanding complicated language makes you totally prepped for law school! (Source: I’m an English major and my university constantly talks about law school as a potential next step.)

Just to answer Mamrie's question about a therapist taking on a client they know, you are correct. If a therapist knows someone on a personal level they cannot see them as a client because that is a conflict of interest and could lead to biases during therapy.

Where I live in Canada, if you know your therapist before therapy they can't be your therapist unless you go through this exs tensile process of giving consent and such. Also, my best friend was going to have the same therapist as me and then found out that we were friends and wasn't allowed to take her on as a client anymore.

Not a therapist but a Social worker and we have similar code of ethics. If a therapist knows who you are or is up to them to see whether or not your relationship will prohibit the therapeutic relationship. Most therapist don’t because of the ethical dilemma of dual relationships.

All my coworkers are women that are 60+ and I'm in my 20s. There is a day shift and a night shift, the day-shift has 3 other employees and the nigh-shift has like 10. I work the day shift. I was almost immediately adopted by the day-shift crew as their work-niece/daughter. As it turned out, there is a MAJOR cliquishness that I wasn't aware of between shifts (I am one of 2 workers that do not do both shifts) but was somehow accepted into the "popular" group and I am now privy to gossip etc. (nothing that serious really, just hilarious cranky rocking-chair-on-the-porch type of gossip...again these ladies are basically all retirees). I have attended 2 non-work functions in the 10 months I've been employed there and have had a great time even though it was definitely out of the norm for me; now I know that I socialize better with grannies than co-workers my own age. ...so I'm going to bingo next friday. That is my life.
@ItsTorple6 жыл бұрын
To answer your question, yes, in most cases, it would be unethical for a therapist to take you on as a client if they already know you. The “in most cases” part refers to situations where this could be different depending on factors like the degree of your relationship (big difference between working with your bestie than Susan from that 1 hot yoga class you went to...although Susan has probably seen some shit) or where you live (i.e.: small town/remote area where you don’t have access to enough therapists so it then becomes more unethical to deny treatment because you don’t have another referral to provide and also can’t really avoid knowing a lot of the people in the area because they are the only people in the area lol). If you are referring to celebrity status, though, I think that would have to be a conversation between you and your potential therapist about how comfortable the two of you are with that and, assuming your therapist isn’t a huge fangirl or something, they should be able to respect those boundaries and acknowledge that, while there is a lot they know from you as an entertainment personality portrayed in the media, they don’t actually know the person that is sitting before them yet and the focus should be on that relationship and the new information that you introduce in session, not what fresh hot shit TMZ pumps out this week! 😊

Not sure if you were actually interested, but since I am currently in graduate school for Psychology, if a therapist has a previous relationship with a client (be it romantic, friend, family, etc.) it is unethical to treat them if the therapist can't remain objective. You can still see them, but you have to make sure it doesn't affect how you treat and interact with them because the primary goal is to ensure the client's well-being. Also we would avoud seeing you outside of therapy unless you interact first for much the same reasoning.

To answer your question, therapists are meant to avoid "dual relationships" with clients. So, a therapist should not provide services to a friend, ex-partner, or relative, for example. If the client is an acquaintance, it would be decided on a case-by-case basis.
@alexispullins1336 жыл бұрын
As a therapist, y’all just cracked me up. Also, the answer to your question... if you do know someone personally, you cannot be their therapist as it is a “conflict of interest” and you can’t have a professional relationship along with a personal relationship. Lots of different reasons why, but just know it’s a big no-no. Also, if we see you in person and you initiate a hello, we can say hello but we are technically not to talk about your therapy or treatment in public due to the possibility of others listening to your treatment and diagnoses. Don’t want any HIPAA violations... We usually say hello and that it’s nice to see you, and go about our ways.
