To become a verloskundige (midwife) in the Netherlands you have to go to the hogeschool (college) for four years at least. It is a bachelors degree. Because of this a midwife will have more knowledge on the subject than a 'regular' doctor, who trains for six-seven years on a huge variaty of subjects. Your midwife is always a real medical professional. Because of this, combined with the fact that you will not have a home birth if you have complications during pregnany, the Netherlands has one of the lowest baby mortality rates.

Allmost correct. It's university of applied sciences (not college..) and there is a bachelor degree but also a master degree.

When my mom gave birth to my sister the help from the kraamverzorgster was so nice to have, because my mom could rest and recover from labor in the comfort of her own home while also receiving the care she needed. I think it's great that this is possible here and I didn't even know that this would be a typical Dutch thing.

Also: if you have an uncomplicated natural birth at the hospital, you can be assisted by your midwife rather than a doctor. This is what we had for our forst child and worked great for us. It felt good to be in the hospital so everything is in place if something went wrong, but also the dekivery is done by someone you know and you discussed all your preferences with. Our midwife was assisted by a hospital nurse. A gynocologist might have multiple births at once, but the midwife will be there the entire time.

Fun fact if you have a home delivery your midwife will be assisted by a kraamzorg nurse during delivery.

Bevallen had another meaning too. It's also used to express how you liked something. Like: dat is me goed bevallen. Which means that you liked something. Or: dat is me niet goed bevallen. If you didn't like it.

Hey Jovie. My wife and I are going some family planning at the moment and this is helping us a lot. I would like to know something though. I have a different supplement package than my wife. She is on the one that covers extra hospital expenses associated with child birth. Here are just a few questions I would like to ask after watching you video: 1. When a child is born, do they take on the mother's supplement package, or the father's into account? Or does it work differently for kids? 2. My wife does want an epidural, but I would like to know if it is also available for home births, or is it only available for hospitals or birthing clinics? Thank you beforehand :-)

I don't think they cate about dad's insurance at all when it comes to birth.. and no, epidural - only at the hospital :/

Hi Jovie, or just anyone who may be able to help with this. I'm not able to find pregnancy and future parents courses in English offered anywhere in the Netherlands. Does anyone know about some good ones, or if there are any in English that we can visit, in person or online? Thanks a lot for any info on this🙏

Hi! I have a question what is the paperwork you have to do after giving birth in the Netherlands? And the father of we are not married? Thank you for your videos 💕

This is all very true what she says, but I was born one month and three weeks early, my mother went to see her doctor and her water broke and three hours later I came. And it turned out she was in labor all night. She told me she remembers cramping all night before that but she thought it was just like her period coming or some thing. I said during your pregnancy? She said yes it can happen. But this Dutch girl is very proud to be and also I was ready to come.

Your midwife will ask for a birthplan. You can put in all your wishes like hospital delivery, pain medication and other wishes. So all your wishes are noted en known.

On the topic of having children in a foreign country, I would love to know how you found it raising kids through multiple languages. Also an expat living in NL! Between myself and my husband, we speak 5 languages total but are worried about confusing our kids when we have them with so many languages! It sounds like you’ve mastered it with your family!
@ABC-ABC12343 жыл бұрын
A good tip would be is to *NOT* speak the language they speak at school! Due to the fact that the kids become extremely well versed in the "academic" language they are brought up, the necessity of "training" that particular language is inefficient and redundant. A good idea is to pick a language you know they would get far, for example in Western Europe; don't bother training English/French, but pick German/Spanish.

Great video- It would be good to explain what it means to be "handed over to the doctor" when you have a midwife team..I'm an expat in Utrecht and gave birth in January! I was declared "medical" or high risk due to my water breaking early, and this meant my midwife was NOT allowed at the hospital with me. It sucked because I was counting on having her support. Everything went well in the end though, and the kraamzorg was a lifesaver!

Yes, do you want to deliver in hospital with a doctor-in-training. Or with a midwife that helped deliver dozens of children in the past 2 years.

Hey Jovi, great video! This definitely takes away all my doubts about giving birth here 😂 Just kidding of course 😉 But I did share the video with a Canadian friend of mine from tiktok, we happened to be talking about giving birth in her live yesterday 😇 Seemed too much of a coincidence not to share!

Great video again - unfortunately some Americans will not understand it as they will consider the system to be socialist which is bad in their opinion.
