Giving the Tudor P01 a fair shake

I have to set my pre-conceived notions of this P01 aside... and give it a fair shake. Too often we can be quick to judge and dismiss. Does this watch hold it's own? Let me know what you think.

Totally! This watch has real character. The P01 is the Tudor I will be adding to my collection as soon as I can afford it. I own a Heritage Ranger, which I adore, and wish I had bought the North Flag when I had the opportunity.

I bought this watch a year ago, it is just perfect, suggestions on changing bezel lock, is flat out incorrect and wrong. I bought mine from small family owned jewelry in Northern NJ, just outside NYC. They could not keep the P01 in stock, I had to wait for delivery. Any suggestions to modify this unique and spectacular watch is just misplaced. I will ask simple question, where else can you find such a unique watch? Short list answer for sure.

I bought mine after trying it on at my AD. I’ve been wearing mine everyday during the pandemic. It’s rugged and suits my 7 inch wrist perfectly.

Just bought one today. 7.5” wrist. I LOVE it! Love the bezel lock. I use the bezel to mark UST for flying. While I like the band and clasp I DO wish I could get a bracelet for it.

There are a few great bracelet/strap options here. I’ve had it on Milanese mesh bracelet as well on a Karlsruhe (from Uhrenbandversand). I also picked up a Superlegerra single pass strap from eBay as a result of a recent review by Watchchris I think. I’m yet to play with this one though. I don’t like removing that lug link to keep think as authentic as possible. Great watch though. Enjoy it

future classic? yeah right. it looks like a SKX and an explorer tried to have a baby, but failed. and what's with all the mixed brushing? it looks gross. and what's the point of having some complex bezel action when the bezel is pretty much useless because there is no GMT?

So much better than the Bland Bays. It has its own style and stands out. Still prefer the North Flag and Ranger, but this would be my 3rd favourite Tudor... Tbh for the price I'd get a Seamaster tho! Cheers Bruce 👍🏻👍🏻

I can't agree on the changes you propose for this Tudor P01. It would make this quirky watch like most of the other Black Bays. You can't get rid of that bulbous bevel lock. But I do agree the lock system is a little long and makes this watch feel pretty huge. But at least you now have a watch that you can honestly state is too long, lug to lug, and use it as an example! I came very close to buying this P01 but a NOS Black Bay ETA came up for a really good price that I couldn't pass up. But maybe later this year? So many Tudors, so little funding for them all.

Ive always liked it and I think it will eventually become a premium collector piece, mainly because not many people are buying them. For me the lug length is a deal breaker. Only good for someone with a significant wrist size.

Hi Bruce ..like your video on the po1,I absolutely love this watch and I bought it on february 16th of this year ..it's one of a kind ,it can be used as a crude gmt .I'm a big guy with 7 1/2 inch wrists and it wears well and I get alot of use out of it ..I'm a tudor fan with 3 of them the other 2 are black bay blue 41 and a tudor north flag ...tudor represents incredible bang for buck and I'm a massive fan of there products

I'd be all over it. Change everything about it that makes it stand out? That defeats the whole point of this watch. Watch lovers continually cry from something unique. Yet, when they get it they want it changed to the same old same. Great watch.

I had this after waiting few months before lockdown last year after getting back from New York and also getting the gold chronograph on bund in watches of Switzerland terminal 5 on way over at 20% off. They now got rid of watches at tax free in Uk airports. 🤯🤦🏻‍♂️ Love them both these and totally different to rest of collection. Great video

. . . If they would take everything away from the P01, it wouldn't be a P01, than it would be a BB 58, or a BB GMT, but this is a P01 and it looks just like the Prototype. I own it besides a BB Bronze and a Pelagos and I love it. It is such a cool watch. I am happy that we have Watches that are 36mm and slim, but I am also happy that there are manufacturers who are brave enough to build some real chunky, Charles Bronson manly watches, even if these pieces are 55mm like the IWC Big Pilot Vintage Flieger. How boring would it be if all the watches out there would fit the same 5 wishes. :) Keep on the good work. :)

Yea man I tried it on Friday at my AD and it’s just too big in every way. I’m 6’-6” so I could pull it off, but way too bulky. Ended up with a BB58 Blue. I get people think that’s boring, but my god it is just the perfect watch size. Nearly identical to my 16570.

I can sorta identify. I'm 6'4" ish with ~8“ wrist. Doesn't mean that 39mm is not ᴛʜᴇ ideal size piece for a braceleted sports watch. However - I love this piece.

I love how different it is. What you described/suggested is just the black bay steel bezel model. So no, it'll just be another boring diver. This is original.

This P01 pretty much has the bezel style that the new Explorer II should have been released with....just changed to the 24hr Arabic numerals.

If you made the changes you suggest you would end up with an ordinary Black Bay. I am biased though as the very happy owner of the P01. It is so unique compared to my other Tudor, the blue smiley one. The P01 stands out in the large bunch of very similar divers, Submariners and All those who wish they were Subs. You have very few Divers that are truly unique, Panerai, P01 and the Longines Legend Diver are among those. Thank you for an interesting perspective to a truly unique watch with a great story.

You're not wrong, those changes might make it more commercially successful, but it would take away from what is an original design. There are already enough of the traditional dive watch out there. I'm glad of the difference.

Just added one to my rotation of a Richard Mille RM 29 in rose gold & my Audemars Piguet Offshore Jarno Trulli, which is forged carbon fiber with “Cermet” bezel. I’m an enthusiast in the most severe of the definition though and wanted a piece with the gravity of my pricey pieces that I could just hand right over to a robber as I work in Los Angeles 😂

I love that dial/ hands and 12h bi-directional bezel, but the case is only a freak. It will be hard to find matching straps or bracelet and it looks like scratch magnet, what will show marks everywhere. That bezel locking device only needs some sand and will sound gritty. That case looks also sharp on crown guard. I see it will be hard to maintain its good looks after day to day use.

I own this watch, if you like brutalist industrial design and architecture. The brushed case has a raw minimalist design which is really well executed and finished. The dial and hands are visually well balanced. I have a small wrist and the side lug pieces wrap perfectly around the wrist. I have large watches such as panerai’s, this watch is more comfortable. I took the rubber strap off and put it on a thick 20mm shark mesh and a 20mm ratchet divers buckle from Strapcode. If you want something interesting that others don’t have or dare, this is a cool watch.

Hey Bruce, I agree Tudor make a good bracelet however my bb58 bracelet is sat in the box because of the lack of adjustment. No half links and only 3 micro adjustments. I can't get a good fit 😕

I recently held one at an AD and it at the very least it is interesting and unique. I really like the print dial, not sure why every modern dive watch has to have applied indexes and a ceramic bezel insert. The Black Bay looks great with it’s aluminum bezel insert, sometimes the ceramic just looks like you’re trying to hard.

If you see the difference between the other black bay 200 m this P01 have an o-ring extra on the crown tube. Very nice watch 😎👍

Definitely in the "love it or hate it" category, ... and as of right now, ... I love it. Yes it's chunky. Yes it's quirky. Yes it's not too everyone's taste. But it sure has talking points. My wrist is 18 cm/7 inches, so right on the lower limit for wearability. I agree that a version without the bezel lock would be great, ... but disagree with adding a GMT function. Tudor already has watches for that. The 12 hour bezel is the simplest, cleanest, usable, second time zone option. I was going to say "purist", ... but that is Glycine territory. Thanks.

In many ways it's a design exercise that's oddly been made available commercially. Normally aspects of such an exercise would've only appeared in more viable products instead of the entire unit fully formed landing in a jeweler's case. It's kind of a peek behind the Wizard's curtain. In terms of fun, I'd call it a net positive.

It’s not my thing . It looks clunky awkward and cumbersome. and just dosent look as if it would be comfortable .. I’m not a fan of the normal 41 mm as I feel it’s uncomfortable on the wrist . This looks as if it wear a whole lot worse . If you don’t have comfort then don’t see the point ..

Glad to see you done this review, I think it's a genuinely interesting individual watch. I agree that a more classic bracelet or strap may of been preferable to the strap/fixing that came with it. Any of the other changes would make it into just another dive watch, removing the individuality of the piece.

I like it. This watch is all about that bezel-lock system, so I don't think getting rid of that is the answer. They just need to market it more and release new variations of it, like a bracelet version or different dial colors. The more people see it, the more it'll garner a following. It's not for everyone, but that's entirely okay.

When this came out I had the same thought that I might like it if they got rid of the (imo) hideous bezel lock system but then I realized that at that point its just another tool watch that doesn't really do much. Dont remember which movement this has - maybe a differentiator if they have the new Tudor movement. Personally I would be buying another watch even then for this price point. its a miss design wise for me but probably better to try the moonshot and miss then be boring for a brand like this. Unfortunately I don't think this is the cliche of shoot for the moon and land among the stars... Unless thats a slow death in the cold vacuum of space.

I think you have given this a fair review. It definitely isn't for me...just a little too ehhh, yeah it's ugly, there is no way around it. I think what really put people off about this piece, is that before it came out Tudor was teasing it as if it was going to be a re-release of the Tudor Submariner. When it wasn't a Submariner but this P01 the hate just compounded. Another great video...oh and enjoy that RAM Sport you talked about in your live stream. I own one as well, in Yellow. Love it, best truck I've ever had.

Just buy a seiko, much cheaper, for a similar look . It could be a future classic though , because it's a tad different from tudor. It reminds me also of the German tool type designs, that a lot of German brands do, almost over engineered. Although that's part of it's charm .
