Harley's Screamin Eagle 120R Twin Cam CAN Get Even More Powerful

The 120R is the most powerful Twin Cam engine Harley-Davidson offers right out of the box in crate engine form. But it doesn't end there, there's a Screamin Eagle RX Race Kit that will bump the power even further. It's not for beginners or even the faint of heart, this engine rips as is but to take it even further is blurring the lines of rational sanity. Even if you have a 120ST you can still get more out of it with a few tweaks, even the ST street engine isn't exactly mild. The 120ST can easily made into an unforgiving monster motor like the 120R.

Would you upgrade a 120ST or go with a 120R and add you own induction system?
@mattis8205
@mattis8205 3 жыл бұрын
Could you do a 120ST with the Pro Racing induction kit perhaps? Best of both worlds seems like, but very pricy. And what's with titanium rings!? Titanium is a reactive metal. I have hear horror stories about AR rifles with titanium firing pins that scored and ended up fusing with the bolt under high heat conditions after repeated firing. Wouldn't titanium rings gall up or fuse to the pistons? Valve springs is ok because they aren't in the cylinder and they get cooled by oil and aren't friction parts.

@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
The RX kit would fit right on the ST, the R just gets a more aggressive cam and a bullet cam plate with a high volume oil pump. Other than that they are the same motor. They must be coated or something but they haven't had any issues with the rings sticking.

I have a 2001 Fatboy. I installed the 120R engine about 4 months ago. It has bit over 6500 miles now with no problems at all. Gas mileage, when riding long distance is about 32 mpg. I installed an oil cooler because the summers in south Texas are brutal. Added a SE ignition system module and high capacity coils. I've had no problems at lower speeds. If you do, just drop it down a gear (I have a SE 6 speed transmission) Personally I love the engine and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

G'day team, it was interesting to hear what you had to say about the 120R and thanks for your comments. Currently I have one fitted to my 2009 CVO Springer Softail and it copes quite well with day to day traffic and riding but in saying that this would be different for everyone because we all live in different areas and population. Mine is fitted with a 55mm HPI throttle body only because it was originally for the 110 motor and a D&D 2 into 1. I had the o'l girl on the dyno and it came out at 108hp and 128 torque, yes the numbers are low and possibly due to the 55mm TB but it's a tough street motor and yes it pulls at wide open so hang on if you decide to get one yourself. A few items I would highly recommend you also fit is an upgraded clutch and basket, I fitted a Barnett item and it's great as you would expect. If you decide to head for the 120ST version spend a bit more and add the cam plate and oil pump as an upgrade. which ever choice you make remember to have a good look at the compensator because it may need updating as well. I believe that the one big advantage is the Screamn Eagle Crank Shaft as the Twin Cams suffer from a poor crankshaft and the improved crank bearings as well so if you did a price comparison with upgrading the current twin cam to buying the 120R it's a no brainer. Just one other thing with the 120R is they have an issue with the lifters failing so make sure you change out the SE valve springs for a set of bee hive one able to hag on to the 266E. I hope this is of some use to anyone out there, keep the shiny side up won't you. Regards VM.

I have a 2010 Fatboy Lo with the 120R. Bought the bike new in 2010, had them split the cases before I took possession and installed the 113 Stage IV kit. I had V&H Big Radius 2 into 2 exhaust, very loud and hit hard, bottom end power wasn’t great, but the engine came on hard at 3k to red line. That engine was stout, but an inner cam bearing came apart around 16k miles, destroyed engine, so I bought the 120R crate engine to replace it, has a Freedom Exhaust 2 into 1 and used same induction I had on 113. 120R with Freedom exhaust has much better bottom end, and actually is more low speed friendly, rather docile. Around town riding is fine, much better manners than the 113 setup, but did produce a lot of heat, so I put a Jag fan assist cooler on it to remove some heat. Still comes on hard from 3k to redline.

I run a 120R on the street and track, I am very happy with it. I have taken a few long trips with it 500+ miles. It performs great and 45 mpg on the road. That's not as good as the hopped up 96,but I'm happy with it. My best is 7.05sec. 100 mph in 1/8 and 11.0 sec. 118 in 1/4. I run a thunder max tuner and pump gas. I would not recommend this set up for a new Rider. It can be a hand full on the street. But it is strong and I haven't broke it yet.

The best combination, and I know from my own experience by running a 120R (and 120RX) in my FLD for me is to modify the combination with the 267E cam only without the rest of the RX mods and take it to the track on race gas and the roads on pump gas. Still learning with this idea for now. Updates later, and soon. Have made 133hp, 129lbft tq so far with this combination. Cycle-Rama and Tampa HD improving the bikes chassis with Ohlines shocks etc. and Cycle-Rama tuning the engine after improving the 120R heads.

@@kriskirk7814 Wes of Cycle Rama did some head work on my 120R. The result with the 267 cam and without the Hurricane Heads is 135 hp and 131 ft. lbs. of torque on pump 93 octane gas. The 120R with Hurricane Heads will not run on pump gas, only race gas, without retarding the timing or lowering the compression to 11.5; Wes helped by modifying the Harley heads that came with the 120 R. I will modify the engine for bagger GT racing next month and hopefully gain more power and torque with a cam more suitable for road racing and what-ever-else modifications it takes to reach the maximum horsepower and torque possible with this engine.

Hey man, thanks for this video. I've wanted a general summary and comparison of these equivalent motors for quite some time. We should note that "horsepower" is a fictitious number derived from measurable torque x RPM meaning usually, that horsepower number gains denote increased flow at higher RPM and conversely, sacrificing torque at lower RPM (waiting for the blowback as soon as I hit "send"). With your explanation here I'd likely stick with the "R" (no X-pro) and find a torque cam for it being I really never redline or race stop to stop (my days of doing that are long since gone). In the comments I also see people tour with these things (I tour on a stripped down Softail) so that eases concerns however, what additional mods would be required downstream; i.e.: primary chain, clutch, (existing 5 speed trans) and belt? No need for specificity but your general thoughts would be great. Footnote: I'll never understand in comments why people must put others down so offensively for some items not included in anyone's KZbin productions we get for free. Impressed you took a higher road not feeding on chum thrown add-hock to sharks. Good job and thanks!

Thank you, l appreciate your support of the channel. These are really good motors, l would definently add an oil cooler if you don't have one already. For me the two things l would do installing one of these is upgrade to a Screamin Eagle compensator and and look at a good high performance clutch upgrade. Definitely a compensator, the clutch would just depend on how hard you plan on riding the bike.

@@GixxerFoo I don't pay to have anything done, I've been building stuff for forty years, I trust VERY few people with my stuff. But, honestly, I could buy a new 120R, if they're still available, swap the cams out, use the 58MM throttle body and high flow injectors from the 117 Stage IV onto the 120R, and go have it tuned. It would probably be quicker and easier. And perform as well or better. And, I'd still have the 117 to play with. Maybe if my wife decided she wanted something different, I would just swap the 117 in place of the 96 on the Night Train. It's just something I started thinking about, when I started adding up the parts, and my time, that I'd invest in upgrading my 117. Funny, on back to back dyno pulls, an S&S 124T had less than a 12HP margin over my 117. Otherwise, I might look at an S&S engine.

@newsrider1130
@newsrider1130 2 жыл бұрын
@@GixxerFoo We tried octane booster to no joy; then one engineer decided to retard the timing 5 degrees; that made the engine stop pulling on upgrades. When we first installed the RX kit, I had to run it on race gas (110 octane) and it made a great deal of horsepower, but I didn't have the engineer dyno the bike at that time :( I ran it on a country road and it was very fast; I decided it was at a ridiculous cost so I asked if the engineer (H-D shop) could find a way to make it run on pump premium gas. The result was retarding the timing 5 degrees, which caused losing power going uphill. At present I have it at Iron Horse Performance (a H-D certified shop); the owner is a master HD engine builder. His plan has great promise for big power; details too much to mention here, but will post them when the engine is finished; I will include photos and cutlines.

@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
To get to a 110 you'd be looking at splitting the cases and going back with a stroker crank and the big bore cylinders. The 95 inch kits are bolt on big bore cylinders and a set of cams. They will up your power to over 80 horsepower and get your torque up to 100ftlbs. That's with a kit that has mild cams. The 88's shorter stroke works very well when converted to a 95 inch.

A Screamin Eagle kit with cams is about 1K, but aftermarket kits are a bit less. 95 kits are a great way to go on the 88 and still keep the reliability. Cams alone provide a nice boost, but the 95 is the way to get the most out of it.

@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
The 120R is goes for sells for about 5$695 for 06 up Dyna and Touring models, 07 and later softails are $5999, 02 to 06 Dyna and touring $6195 and 01-06 Softails $6195. If you have a dealer doing the work, that's about the same cost as what buying a Stage 4 kit and having it dealer installed would run. But doing the 120R you can keep your spare motor or sell it to recoup cost. Plus you have a documented paper trail from Harley-Davidson for your bike showing that 120R belongs in that bike since the motor won't have your bike's vin.

I'm sold the mechanic working on the bike was ok and have had no problems to date with mechanical other than natural stuff consumed clutch. So I wanted to order the Nightster fender and parts as the Canadian version did not look like the nightsters advertised. They told me it was an illegal mod. It should be illegal to put something together at that price with e dynos the last one being the final dyno setting the engine timing ect. They changed nothing from some can map for a 551. My complaint was how do you do that the numbers are different between the cams. Anyway sorted now took 2 years and a camera went looked inside to see pitted pistons .imagine the head is the same. So now I'll use other runners not the Harley peo tune.funny other company's have maps for Harley cams. So I'll get Andrews or s&s or redline no more Harley expensive parts I'm Gina pay I'll pay but I'll pay now for specialized as Harley don't hold their own. Sad. I love harley

The "download" as it is often referred to for tuning on some of the Harley Dealer installations is awful. If you're sticking with all Harley performance parts it's well worth getting the Screamin Eagle Tuner. I don't think I've ever seen a bike that ran right with the canned download map for their parts. In my opinion even the factory tune on new bikes isn't really that great, but it works alright since the standardized assembly process. Even a with a Harley Tech doing the install, doing everything right, the canned map just doesn't work. If you buy the tuner and the dealer installs, the technician will map the bike with the tuner and run it on a dyno. If the dealer doesn't have a dyno, a good dealer will run some auto tune sessions and make sure it's right before they send it out.

The pro runner was the saving grace.i knew something did not sound right going through the throttle to excelerate and I'm talking normal excelration I'd go through the one set of numbers reamed havovic. The pro runner soon as I seen it like how is one cylinder 14 degrees higher than the other and then a 1000 rpms away the other cylinder. I start slow one cell at a time worked to a basic map with no advance and slowly added some back in it did work a 6000 rpm but who lives there on a street bike and even them no would jugle around for no apparent reason like 26 degrees dropping back to 23 and in the next cell jumping to 29 made no sense. They justified it on irregular firing of the Harley motor. So my response was a 536 cam has been around along time before EFI and apparently it's the same grind with the exception of some difference on the cam for EFI but the grind is identical so I asked them how did you need able to do this with points as I see no difference well big difference but the actual rotations are all the same. Thank-you for the light you show us on problems we can face and for you help suggestions and advice love it Thank-you

Thank you! Fuel injection love it or hate it on a Harley, it's given us the ability to tune each cylinder individually. This really helps with cooling down that rear cylinder and allowing us to get more precise VE tables.

Yeah it won't work for the Softail, butnthe 120R will fit and it's basically the same engine. Just a more aggressive cam and an upgraded cam plate with a high volume oil pump.

@@GixxerFoo so, the 120R is a balanced motor ? Nice, but way too aggressive for the street in my opinion.....I like the occasional holeshot , but I don't want to be at the bar 3 pitchers in by the time everybody else catches up 🤪🤣

I'm done with Harley racing parts. They don't stand behind their products. I had a multi gauge tack speedo fuel gauge for 1000 bucks roughly and Al I got was the rpm and speedo rest of it including sending unit. They left me on my own and it was their tech did install. So to make thing worse on the same build 536 cams not to mention a bill on nearly 10 grand for all the work on the bike it ran like shit the timing was a mess it look like Harley threw handfuls of random numbers. Bad experience from now on I go to other companies for performance stuff I love Harley's but that's it there worthless with the support you need. Who sells a cam and after installing it tell you gee we can't get a map for it. How do you think I feel. From Kingston Ontario canada

The only reason the Harley says the 120st doesn’t fit in dyna models is cause it comes with an electronic throttle body. Does this guy even research what the hell he’s talking about!!!
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
That is true, also Harley won't warranty it if you put it in a Dyna and swap out to a cable throttle body. But yes you are correct, technically it can be put in a Dyna.

Not sure why someone would want or needs the 120R but to each their own. The only reason i can see is the person who wants this needs & craves attention among his group of riders. I have a 107 i my 2021 Street Glide and its more power than i will ever need, hell the speed limit is 70mph
