Everybody goes on about how a Harley is a motorcycle that you just cruise on you don't buy it for berserk levels of horsepower. Yet the first thing you guys do is rip out the engine and do all sorts of horsepower stuff to it and it seems that you guys are never satisfied. 61 wasn't big enough, 74 not big enough, 80 cubic inches not big enough, then you had 88, 95, 103, 107, 114, 124, and now we're up to 131. It seems no amount of horsepower is ever enough for you guys. What I bought my 99 Harley Sportster 20 plus years ago and everybody kept saying turn your 883 into a 1200. I told them until the engine wears out completely, it has 370,000 miles on it, but the engine is still all original. I have a feeling the bike will Outlast me. More enjoyable and more reliable than I ever thought it was possible for a Harley. Love the sporty in all its Rusty duct taped Glory!!!

My personal experience was this. I watched one of you past videos about cams and at the end you mentioned that you would prefer the wood performance TW-222 cam. I have a 2011 HD Ultra Limited and at the time had 60,000 miles. Being an aviation mechanic, I ordered the maintenance manual, decided to it myself and ordered the TW-222 cam, the S&S high-flow oil pump and cam plate kit, S&S lifters and all the associated gaskets. The motorcycle already had a stage 1 on it with RCX Excalibur slip-on mufflers, and HD screaming eagle centrifugal clutch, and after completion I had it tuned by Harley since they were very close to my house. I have to say that this 103 engine not only sounded completely different but felt like a completely different engine. To start, in the past you could feel the motorcycle begging for a shift. With the TW-222 you can literally blow the engine while the sucker still gains speed....it's insane. If you like to ride in low RPM, then this is for you. When I just barely open the throttle and very gently enter the friction zone, the centrifugal clutch bites down, or at least feels like it, and the engine does not lose a step. And of course, you need to get the hell out of heavy traffic or "that driver" without saying the obvious, you are gone, and not only that, but you don't really need to open the throttle that much before the motorcycle accelerate with a thunderous roar which I absolutely love. So yes, I agree absolutely with your take on bolt-in cams. Obviously, different people have different opinions but I suspect that all of us are looking for the most basic, yet important characteristics (Not necessarily in the same order): 1. Power 2. Torque and Acceleration 3. Low Cost 4. Sound Love your work...Stay Strong! v/r Juan

I just road my new road glide with the screaming eagle stage 2 cam n 114 motor vance n hines power duals n rinehart header for the first time yesterday all I can say is wow compared to my old ultra classic stage 1, this new bike throws you back n takes off like a rocket, no matter my speed when I twisted that throttle or down shifted or let off the throttel the sound was the loudest bark with authority and best sounding exhaust that me or my harley friends have ever heard putting almost 117 torque to the wheels but it feels much much more, it don't lack for power or sound n handled llike a dream, takes the turns like the bike is on rails, and the low speed manuveering is effortless, this is my 3rd harley dresser bagger and my favorite for sure, if anyone is on the fence about getting a cam just do it, no regrets here !!

I like, but you have the same. I pulled the trigger. I went with woods TW7h cams, S&S, camp plate, oil pump S&S crank. And you’re gonna like this. The heads are on their way. Branch and O’Keefe. We all know about George branch. I sent the heads to them and they’re getting the works. I did order a set of 10 to one pistons but we’re getting the heads decked that should bump it a little bit. That should be a good package for my heavy ass. Screaming eagle. Oh yeah, by the way, I’m using screaming heads and my screaming limited 110 . I’ve been doing lots of research talking to people talk to woods they recommended that TW 7H cam. I didn’t want to go crazy with the compression. It is a water cold but all the good stuff in it that should make some pretty good numbers as far as torque. Being at the bike has 60,000 miles my runout was over 5° so the hell with it let’s put the good stuff in it. My CVO limited has more stuff than these new ones. I like it it’s comfortable. The bikes are making big power. I’m not trying to race, but I ride two up and heavy For very long distances. If you look at this, give me your thoughts. I have a really good tuner and builder cares about his work. I think it’s gonna be nice. I never had a tune on my bike. Two and 1 to 2 and start buffers with full sack 2 inch baffles. And I’m keeping the stock throttle body. We’ll see how that works out. Should be OK. If you read this, I would love to know your thoughts. We always second-guess ourselves, but I’ve been thinking about this bill for a couple years. I was getting fluctuations in my oil pressure. It was starting to chew up my oil pump. Ran for a while, but. It’s still going to be a 110 with more compression. I’m keeping the stock jugs, but having them gone through touched up, they looked bad it’s not gonna be a race, but I think it’s gonna pull real good. I know you like the 222 woods what’s his name? I forget his first name he told us to go with the other ones. I think either one would work I should be pushing over 10 to one with decking should be a little bit over not too much though. Do a lot of traveling I don’t want nation. Anyway, a lot of people are asking what’s the best for there CVO. Well this is what I did I’ll let you know how it works out. I have high hopes I think it’s going to be pretty good and it’s pretty like you said over 10 1/2 to one is too much a couple with too much compression getting stuck on the George Washington bridge going into New York Manhattan just to look around. Yeah the bike did not like it but this bike has the water cold heads. It should help. Thanks man you’ve been a help. You help me decide. This research on this stuff. and of course my builder had his say so of course he knows more than me. I’m a lazy Google Harley . But that being said, I am a excellent Google doctor. Lol.

I know I talked a lot about everybody’s gonna do something different. Think the bike should run pretty good. Didn’t feel like spending the money and upgrading to 117. Honestly, I think compression and cams give you the best for your money. I wanted the wood cams so I could not go gear drive. That’s a bummer but no big deal really. I have a really good tuner. I think that makes some decent power. Still have questions. I’m using stock throttlebody my tuner said I don’t need a bigger body. Always second-guessing. Not every day you spent $4000 in parts on the motorcycle. Plus tuning.

I would probably recommend bolt in cams. They are clutch for TC and M8. If your going to build your engine then high lift will be fine if that suits your application. What is certain is you need a better cam than stock one. It makes quite a bit of difference. Ride Safe Man!

Just put a set of S&S 551 easy starts in my 07 street glide, with new cam plate and oil pump. Like them alot, definitely woke up the low end on the old twin cam. One note on dry fitting cams… the cams do not rest all the way into the cam bearings when property seated, I found it better to place them in the cam plate first then check for clearances in the case. Good info as always, thanks.

When I did my head work, I had them put the thinner head gasket on my 103ci. That upped the compression slightly. I guess every bit helps. Another great video. Keep'm coming.

If I go into my SE 110/117, it's getting higher compression, ported heads, a serious cam, either Comp or George Bryce Star Racing, and both the S&S cam plate/oil pump and S&S rockers. It'll get Comp springs, retainers, and keepers, and Ferrea valves. I'm not going into it for 10HP. If I go into it, it will be for 40HP.

A lot of this wisdom comes to the same ideas with 4 wheeler engines. You can put “mild” cams into stock motors and get good gains, but when you start tinkering with high lift cams, you gotta start doing some math, and basically rethink your motor build. Seen too many friends thinking it’s just a minor upgrade, but soon have valves kissing pistons.

If you're going to invest in cams, either get S&S or Woods. Don't mess around with the Screamin Eagle cams. I'm not knocking Screamin Eagle, they have some decent quality products, but their cams pale in comparison to some of the other aftermarket companies. Do not get too caught up in the numbers game either. A Harley is about the look, sound, the joy of cruising. If you're goal is super high top end hp you're kind of looking at the wrong bikes.

There's still alot of ambiguity when it comes to what is, or isn't, a high-lift cam. I've been told that a cam with a lift higher than .585 is considered high lift, albeit because of the limited capacity of the stock springs. Lift certainly isn't everything though. In my own personal experience cam timing and compression is the most important consideration, especially if you are considering building on an existing cam. I think if you ride two-up most of the time, and want low end torque, stick to a cam with an early intake valve closing (i.e. something that closes in the 30-35 degree range). This is where riding style comes in. If you don't ride two up, and like to be in the high rpms, then something that closes after 40 degrees (i.e. hot rod) is more preferable. The latter is also more tolerant of more compression...Cam choice is such a matrix. You really need to be honest about where you ride, and think about what you might want to do in the future re upgrades.
@GixxerFoo

Interesting you mentioned that, Wood cams really seem to take everything into account. Bob Wood has designed some very impressive bolt in cams that work with stock valve springs. The lifts are within the limits of the stock valve springs but they produce incredible power.

Thanks for watching! Years ago I put a bolt in cam in one of my old bikes, didn't check clearance, didn't rotate the engine over and just made assumptions with it being bolt in. Well it made contact with the cases and I ended up with a Ebay engine and some salvage parts.

The cam's lift is really not the determining factor to whether compression should need to be increased. That is more determined by duration,overlap,&,the cam's timing events. The lift really has very little effect as far as compression is concerned.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 жыл бұрын
True, but generally the high lift cams are designed with higher compression in mind that exceeds the limits of straight bolt in cams.

@@GixxerFoo alot of ppl make the mistake of guaging a cam's power potential,manners,&,aggressiveness by lift,when in fact,lift actually tells you very little about a cam. Perfect example,compare the Wood 555 to the S&S 583. If a person buys the cams with the higher lift thinking they will make more power,they will be sadly disappointed.If they in turn,increase compression, again,based on lift,they will end up with an unusable detonating motor from excessive cylinder psi. The S&S with .583" of lift,only has 202* of intake duration & closes the intake valve very early,which builds high cylinder psi. It's a low range torque cam. The Wood cams,with almost .030" less lift,but 40* more duration & a much later intake valve closing,will produce much more power with much less lift. A cam's lift actually tells you very little about a cam,as far as power potential, manners,compression needs,etc.

I have the 2022 Harley Road Glide, I’m not a fast rider, I won’t be doing anything too extreme; I just want that heavy chop! I’m going to upgrade my breather, throw on a Thunder header exhaust, a tune and cam. I’m leaning toward the S&S cams but I’m hearing the 575 cam and up requires me to upgrade to a chain driven system instead of the belt. For that extreme chop, which cam should I go with? The 540, 565, 575 or 585? Since I’m going with the stage 2, I might as well put a real cam in the bike because the Harley cam is trash.

This will be a great opportunity to check my cams, cam chain tensioners etc. I've never been a gearhead, but could appreciate performance, if it didn't shorten the life of my engine. Some say to just change the problem lifter, or do I change them all? What is a good choice of lifter? As long as I'm in there, is there any "no brainer" upgrades you'd recommend? Different cams? Oil pump? Cam plate? My main concern is to simply repair the problem, but I don't want to waste an opportunity to upgrade as long as I'm in there. Thank you.

Hi, I needed your advice on throttle body & manifold. We are doing 110 big bore kit with new cams, ported heads on 07 Heritage classic. Do you think it would benefit to install performance throttle body and manifold? If yes, which one would you recommend. Thanks
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 жыл бұрын
I am really on the fence about larger throttle bodies personally, they are very expensive and in most cases you don't get a lot of return on investment. Unless you're going with a monster displacement of 120 inch or larger I'm not a huge fan of them. The best gains I've seen is having the factory unit ported when you're under 120 inch. You may or may not get some gains with a larger aftermarket unit but I would recommend HPI throttle bodies.

The 122 kit is likely going to bump you're torque a bit and you'll be getting a little more horsepower. Really depends on the tuning and the exhaust, if you're running a aftermarket exhaust you'll have quite a bit of gain. After warranty if you'd setup really well for a better tune with a Power Vision and if you wanted swap to an aftermarket cam. That would really bump you're horsepower way north of 100 horsepower and torque well over 120.

Have a 2020 road glide 107 m8 with 2 into 1 thunderheader and high flow air cleaner. I prefer torque over hp. What cam would you suggest? Looking at the s&s 465c that I saw in your video, also planning to do s&s lifters and lifter cuffs

That's an excellent cam for torque, the Red Shift 468 is another good all around cam for torque too. The lifters and cuffs are an excellent idea during a cam swap too. Being a 2020 you've already got the updated oil pump for the M8, if it was an earlier model I would suggest upgrading that too.

I currently have my 05 fatboy cvo in the shop now upgrading the cam chest and decided to go with Feuling 543 cams , lifters, vs screaming eagle 255, also have the power vision tuner, what if any difference do you think I’ll notice?

One of the best cams out there for that setup is the Hammer Performance 570 cam, that's one that's going to give you power down low and on top!

What would you recommend for the 2021 Fat Bob. Chain driven or gear driven cam?
@GixxerFoo

On these newer bikes I like to stick with the chain drive unless you're going down and putting in a aftermarket crank. If the crank is in good shape, .003 or less, .002 preferably you can go with gears if you want to. It's the longevity if you were to develop run out over time in the stock crank, the chain drive will handle that well were the gears you can have some issues.

Thanks, Gixxer! You mention upgrading hyd. lifters in this video, and I personally don't trust S.E. lifters because they have a documented history of roller/needle-bearing failure. Jims USA manufactures excellent hyd. lifters as does S&S. I prefer Jims USA as I know for sure that they are made in the U.S.A. Do you know where S&S lifters are made?, I don't. Thanks again, Greg in Boise.

I'm not sure where the S&S lifters are made but S&S and Jims are pick. I like the Jims since they have worked really hard to perfect the contact points with the cases for anti rotation.

BTW, I chose a "bolt-in" Red Shift 468C cam for my 128 M8 and it pulls like a tractor! Greg
