I think it'll be fine until people mess with it, just like any other evo-after Harley... They only really start to have problems when people mess with them... Yes my 103 has a stage one... Hopefully stage 2 soonish, but simple fact if you leave them alone they're reliable... I modify all my vehicles, my bikes, my trucks, but good on HD for doing what they have to do to keep a real v-twin alive

I have a first year EVO - 1984 FXST. That was my first (and possibly only) bike I've ever owned. What I like about it, is it is simple. I can FIX IT on the side of the road! I don't need an advanced degree in electronics engineering, and I don't need a computer (and a pile of specialty tools) to trouble shoot failures and, more than likely, I WON'T need it to be 'towed' to the dealer...

I have an '84 FXST. I got it as a gift from my father in 1990 upon my return stateside from military service. I had 2 failures that were not my fault. A compliance fitting split open and launched my carburetor. I got home that day thanks to a wad of chewing gum. The next day I replaced the fittings with a solid intake manifold and that problem was solved. The second failure was 3 years later when the electronic ignition module died mid ride. I had to push my bike nearly 5 miles home in the rain. The next day I replaced that electronic ignition with points ignition and had 11 trouble free years. I still run points on both of my Evos. Even as the Evo powered generations progressed, I knew that the "last days" of Harley Dadvidson were on the short horizon. When the twin cam came out, I knew that the end had come.

Harley Davidson is going to evolve themselves right out of business, mark my words. VVT engines rely on oil system sensors to operate, sensors in oil are always a problem. I have been a mechanic on both cars and bikes for too many years to recall, and variable valve timing engines in cars have caused more grief than not. I don't even want to think about VVT on an air cooled V twin, sounds like a total nightmare. But that's just my opinion.

I'm curious about it, just as much as with the twin cooling. The twin cooling is great but the down fall was something as simple as the housing on the electric water pump cracking and failing. Now we're messing with oil, pressure and electric solenoids. The 45 twin depends on that oil for everything!
@mattcottrell3336
@mattcottrell3336 Жыл бұрын
@pierrebornerot4689 agreed. I had a heritage classic for about a year with the 107. No vibration, no growl. It could gitty up but didn't feel like a Harley to me. The dreaded oil pump drama mixed with Harley ESP made me come to the realization that the 103 was the last great motor of the pushrod era. I bought a road king with the 103 and decided I liked it so much, that I went to a low mileage Rushmore bike with a 103. Has been reliable so far and a smooth ride. I really hope Harley doesn't rid themselves of the original motor design, there's nothing else like it. The sound and feel, the ability to customize and the family that comes with just owning one. I'm 35 years old, but the feeling I get on these is unmatched. I liked my Hondas, but I loved my Harleys...
@mattcottrell3336
@mattcottrell3336 Жыл бұрын
@GixxerFoo I think that the twin cooling design is a great idea for the bigger motors. But at what point does the company realize they can't make these motors too much bigger without a complete redesign? And as you stated, if they can't design components to keep these twin cooled motors cool reliably, then why not just stick with what works and make it last a while? Hell they've already cranked the price up! I know you love evos, so I'm sure you'll understand where I'm coming from. If they keep going this direction with their manufacturing, they're gonna end up with a reputation similar to the dreaded AMF days. It'd be a shame to see the company fail after all these years. They've made some great bikes and great motors... who else makes a bike like Harley Davidson?

The twin cam wouldn't be bad if HD didn't cheap out on the parts. It should have had a proper crankshaft, crank bearings, and cam bearings. Theres no reason for the inner cam chain at all, that should be gears. I can live with the outer cam chain but it should have had a long chain guide/tensioner NOT a little bitty tensioner pad. I'm not interested in owning anything HD made after 2017. With each new release I like them less and less. If I get a brand new bike it won't be HD.

The HD reliability is not good these days... I am on my 3rd M8 HD in 4 years. First one was a leaker and consumed excessive oil. My 2nd developed bad lifters, which ate the cam. And at 8500 miles it sumped destroying the engine. I now own a 2023 Street Glide with the smaller 107. I installed DK Customs external head breathers and a Trask transmission vented cover. My goal is to eliminate blowby. So far, so good. My next install is the oil cooler fan and the Fueling short sump plug. Some of the factory installed plugs are driven too far into the case, which contributes to the sumping issue. If this engine fails, it will be my last HD. I purchased a 5 year extended private company warranty so I can sleep better. HD needs to work on the overheating issue that kills these engines. My two cents :-)

I was a young boy when I bought my first Panhead (used) long before most on here were born. The saying was Harleys are a great bike once you rip all the Harley junk off of it. Over my lifetime I've found a lot of wisdom in that statement. And what you say is true. What would it cost to do a gear driven cam setup, decent bearings and some of the other OEM junk that most of us have ripped out and replaced with quality parts? Harley claims to assemble a "premium" motorcycle. Typical lies coming out of the Marketing department. There is nothing premium about a stock Harley Davidson. Maybe a decent crank would add significant cost but better bearings? Better tensioners?

Both of my Patriots, have the 2.4 Dual VVT system. The engine is basically a motorcycle engine, with DOHC and four valves per cylinder. On the road, it sips gas in cruise control. But when you step on it, it's just like when a bike engine gets up on the cam: the beer muscles kick in, and the tach needle bounces off the redline. I expect that the Rev Max engine does the same thing.

VVT makes sense. More efficient and more horsepower. With fuel, spark advance and cam timing all computer controlled that's how we get little engines that perform so well. Now, if we could just add a turbo and effective valve cooling . . .

I have never seen a group of people complain so must as Harley riders, they want Harley t stay exactly the same as it was 40 years ago. The funny part is most of the people who complain don't support Harley anyway, sure they ride a Harley from a couple decades gone by; however, they have not purchased nor do they have any intention of purchasing a new Harley yet they are the ones complaining the most. Ive owned several Harley's over the years and own 3 right now, 2009 Rocker C, 2021 Street Glide and my wife rides a 2009 Tri Glide, we love our Harley's but also ok with evolving, personally i cant wait for Harley to bring out a larger version of the RevMax engine designed for a Street Glide & i know my wife would love the RevMax in a new Tri Glide. I have no interest in working on my bikes, if i need something, the dealership is the qualified ones to complete. Recently just added stage 2 to my Street Glide, dealership is the one i trust, certainly not some backyard mechanic and i have no interest or desire to do it myself. So bring on progression

I think from 2 experiences attempting to replace a few cam actuators, VVT works great until something breaks. When it does, it will happen eventually, the tow truck will come, and the repairs can become very expensive. The VVT damage from wear 130k miles on my buddies Ford150 forced him to lock out the VVT to save the engine from a chain reaction of wear related damage that happened. After market auto parts makers are producing a variety of VVT lock out kits that vastly prolong vehicle engine life on V6 and V8 engines.

Requesting help from this crowd.. kinda long story but.. I had some seizures last year. Consequently, my HD has sat for the duration of my driving restriction (one year). It’s a ‘14 Dyna TC 103 w/ stage 1 (no oil tank like a soft tail). I understand, “sumping is not new.” How can I remove any oil settled that would be sumped, if any? Will a simple oil change be a resolution? I believe I saw there’s a crank sensor during a “Twin Cam Tear Down” video. Can oil be drained from there to avoid sumping? Another vid guy said run my crank case breather tubes into a bottle when I fire it up again and let the engine blow it out. My worry is the screens of the breathers in the rocker box. Should I refrain from starting it and open the cam chest to pour out any that may be settled? I just want to avoid any problems. Thanks, y’all

I really don't think VVT will be worth it on a low-revving push-rod engine. I feel that the complexity & likely cost increase will yield minimal fruit; compared to a basic OHC engine. The weekend wrenchers won't like it either, especially if they have to go waaaaay out of their way for a simple cam-swap & such. Keep it simple, H-D!! Invest now in a next-gen OHC rather than putting lipstick on a hog. Leave the M8 alone and allow we garage mechanics the tinkering time we deserve.
