There is no match to Gjallarhorn and Hedningarna bands to this day. What a blessing of a music they left ✨🙏

Such a unique sound, I miss Gjallarhorn.

I had the incredible fortune to see them perform this live in Jamestown New York when they appeared at the Community College there. I couldn't speak properly afterward due to the spell we all seemed to be under and regret not meeting the band who seemed very friendly. I then drove back upstate through the most intense lightening storm I have ever experienced. A night from a Gjallarhorn song! You guys rock! Please come back!

I'm no expert, but the flute looks to me like a Baroque alto flute. They were wood. The big boxy instrument is indeed a contrabass recorder. This is the first time I've seen one electrified and used in this context. I love it!! These people are among the most creative musicians I've seen on youtube. This song just about puts me in a trance, especially the ending. All the members of Gjallarhorn certainly seem to be in a trance. This music is pure magic.

So hypnotic! A too short carrer for this band!

@MichaelHundige I guess not :( Many of their most prominent KZbin vids were removed a couple of months ago due to complains from their record company[*] - I hoped that it might mean that they were activating but no indication for that thus far. [*] I think that was a stupid move - I'm pretty sure for a small marginal bands the vids here help in growing the fan base and specifically generate more CD sells, than without this exposure.

@EneriGiilaan You know Eneri, you are absolutely correct ! Here I have been so immersed in playing their first two CDs Ranarop and Sjofin over and over again, that I somehow overlooked really exploring their latter material. So I have taken your recommendation, and contacted Digelius Music for a copy of Rimfaxe. Thank you for the reminder, that there is still a lot more great music out their to explore.... some of it being right under my nose.. :)

It is probably a native flute of some kind, not a specific named flute. There are many many flutes out there and they exist in some way in almost every culture, past and present. At 3:35 (around there), you can see some of the other flutes he has. The best thing I can tell you is that they are native flutes, probably specially made too...The instrument at 4:28 is a sub contrabass recorder. Really cool instrument, you should do some research if you want to learn about it :)

@ralphyboy25 Perhaps you should reconsider obtaining the Rimfaxe-album after all ;) It is filled with more or less this kind of "meditative" stuff.

The flute is very similar to "kaval" from Macedonia (former Yugoslavian republic).

@MichaelHundige How wrong one can be! Search for KZbin channel of "GjallarhornOFFICIAL" - seems to be genuine as far as I can tell. They are activating, taking in concert requests, 20th anniversary DVD is coming out ... What a great year this is - first Värttinä comes back with force and then this! What's next - perhaps tomorrow we will learn that Hedningarna will start touring with Sanna and Anita :D
