I have been playing this opening for last 6 months and got very good results against london, classical, and three center pawn. But I am facing some troubles when opponent play four center pawn or three center pawn (f4 instead of c4), and when opponent delay Nf3. Please suggest me how should I respond against these moves.

THIS is what I've been looking for. I rediscovered the game of chess two months ago and I have dreaded playing as black right up to the time I watched this video. I watched it twice and immediately had success. I found your instruction crystal clear, and you have done more for my chess game than any other resource I've used. I appreciate your generosity and I am indebted to you. XD

When the opening is e4, the black defense is modern philidor. But when the opening is d4, isn't the black defense called by a different name?
@sbaumei
@sbaumei 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, to me this looks like playing a variation of the Caro-Kann defense (e4 c6 2. d4 d6 3. Nc3 Qc7) against pretty much anything white throws at you. Very nice idea, and well explained in my view. This should really work well against a lot of opponents, especially those who are not very well prepared for Caro-Kann lines. I really like that the black pieces really seem to flow quite naturally and support each other, which is in my view more than enough compensation for the space penalty for any black player who isn't grand master material (yet). The only potential tactical weakness I found when looking this over is the heavy reliance of the system to get the black bishop out to g4, as this critical piece looks pretty forlorn if it cannot make the transition. And this can easily be prevented by white playing a rather unusual passive h2-h3 early on, say as the 4th or even 3rd move. This should lock in the black bishop very effectively, basically either forcing it's development over the queen side (weakening the pawns and still looking passive), or even worse getting it stuck on the base line. Therefore, what are your thoughts on how to continue against a white opponent that uses h2-h3 as the third or fourth move? Of course accepting the notion that an opponent probably will only ever get the idea of playing such a passive move if she/he prepared for your system, and notices the importance on the biship g4 move ...

Thanks, very good video. Am I correct that this can be used against both 1.d4 and 1.e4? Because after 1.d4 c6 2.e4 it's actually 1.e4 opening by transposition (Caro-Kann). So this is actually universal weapon against both 1.e4 and 1.d4, not just 1.d4.

I think we are missing something here. h3 is can be a very bad move. I can sack my white bishop supported by the queen and get 2 pawns for the piece and blacks, black squared bishop pinning pawn on f2. Even is white defends against it black usually winds up with two connected passed pawns against a knight, endgame. So he plays h3 what to do. Get 2 pawns for the pieces and have his King completely exposed. h3 or h6 should be thought through deeply and NOT played as a matter of course.

Excellent find. This particular White setup was explained in detail in Hillarp's Tiger's Modern. I haven't seen the updated edition to this book but I suspect there might be more theoretical advances for the Black side when facing this particular White setup. My memory may be faulty on this but I think the chapter recommended an immediate c5 to counter. But in my opinion, I believe the best reply may be to throw in g6 with the followup with the bishop on g7 since White is exposing the Queenside to a very strong bishop diagonal.

Why are you calling it 'The Gunjan' ?? It's just a philidor defense with accelerated moves. By the way, I think the moves 1 ... d6 2 ... Nf6 and 3 ... Nbd7 are better to control e5 because when you play 1 ... c6 2 ... d6 3 ... Qc7 Maybe white could response with 1. d4 2. e4 3.f4 4.e5 and you'll get stuck fast.

I like this channels videos, but I question this opening. In the first game, after 5.h3 Bh5, white can go 6. g4 Bg6 7.h4 h6 (to not trap the bishop) 8. h5 Bh7 9. g4 and basically white has play on the kingside and space for free by chasing the bishop. There are g6 ideas, so hxg5 is probably best, but then after Nxg5... this whole thing looks horrible for black. And if you ponder a little bit with it, maybe with some computer help, you'll notice that the position is probably alread around +1.00 and black has to play _very_ carefully. A lot of lines, even with equal material quickly lead to +5.00 despite material balance! This is just a questionable system. If one likes this structures, I think its better to go for a queens indian (solid) or Hippopotamus (questionable, but more solid than this!).

Building on this video, can you show many blitz games using this opening while you comment on your thinking behind each move so that we can have more samples to learn the ideas from. The only problem I see with this is that starting with 1. d4 White can force transposition to the Czech/Pribyl, with isn't that great for Black, especially if White can get in d4-e4-f4. That is the downside of delaying Nf6 after 1.d4.

Thanks for posting Gunjan it is interesting and looks promising with openings involving c4. However as Tijany notes f4 is strong for white. Black tends to do very poorly. In particular after 1. d4 c6 2. e4 d6 3. Nc3 Qc7 4. f4 Nf6 5. Nf3 white has a strong position and wins the vast majority of top level games. After 2. e4 it's likely better to switch to a Caro-Kann defense with 2. d5 and use the Gunjan for 2. c4 openings. Looking forward to trying it out!

I do Nf6, d6, g6. There is often a queen side knight dance maybe even moving him back to original square but great command of the black squares undermining whites pawn formation. Even if white plays super aggressive with the 4 pawn attack any pxp leads to QxQ and white cant castle. Ultimately black should play f5 opening this f file or using it as a ram. My 2 cents.

I use to play instinctively the same system with the difference that the bishop is on g7 after the pawn moves to g6 of course. One of the main ideas is to play rook to e8 or d8 after castling short, then the knight from b8 may come to d7-f8-e6 and d4 with support from the bishop but white may stop this plan with pawn c3. If the white pawn is on c4 then black has a strong outpost on d4. Black will have a pawn on c6 so white can't put a knight on d5. Another outpost for the black knight is f4...

enjoyed the vid, you're a great instructor. I have a question around the 6:00 mark. whenever white's h pawn threatens your bishop and you fall back to the h-file, why shouldn't white press ahead with his g pawn and force your bishop onto another diagonal? because that is what a novice player like me would be thinking. Thank you :)
