GK64XS Wireless Mechanical Keyboard Review

I've had this board for about 3 weeks now. Threw in some Novel Keys Silk Reds, bout to do a case swap to show off that rgb underglow and trying to find a good keycap set to fit the split space mod. I work from home and do a lot of data entry/typing and the split space is fantastic for my productivity. Just finished my first custom coiled aviator cable today too so once the caps and case are swapped I'm all done! Honestly if you're looking to get into a custom build but aren't looking to drop a ton of money or wanna build piece by piece I think this board is fantastic. You get a lot of bang for your buck and it can really become whatever you want, especially with support for gh60 cases. Really happy with my purchase!

Jordan Boudreau yea for sure! As I understand it the 64xs has had its plate changed to be more compatible with standard gh60 cases but I’ve still yet to receive my case for it (thanks to the USPS currently being torn apart but different story..). Once I get it in I’ll let ya know about the swap!

@@jordanboudreau2656 Hey man so just got my new case in and had no problems with the swap! The only slight hiccup was that the new case didn't have mounting hole brackets for the split space plate to mount but I just mounted it using the switches and have had no issues! Didn't have to change the plate at all! The PCB has slightly larger routing holes to accommodate multiple case options so anything in the GH60 case range should fit. Easy swap and looks great!

@@ultimomos5918 With this board would it be possible to replace the right shift and up key to with a single longer keycap and just remap both keys to shift??

Squinn you could remap both keys (I think the only key you can’t remap is function) but I’m not sure of replacing those with something like a 2u cap. I don’t think it would work unless you custom made a cap to those dimensions, feel like you’d prolly get interference on the switches with the middle cap stem. That said I’ve done my case swap and have since spring swapped the Silk Reds to 70g TX springs and switch filmed them. I also run the split space mod and absolutely love the board. You get a ton of functionality and flexibility from this kit at such a low price I would recommend it to anyone breaking into custom mechs. As for the right shift, I honestly don’t even use it now. I’ve mapped shift to my left space, space function to the middle space slot and use the extra 1u key for Mac command. I layer swap back to a more standard layout when gaming and it works great!

I too had really bad spring ping with my retooled mx blacks, so i ordered some lighter springs and did full spring swap. it now sounds 100x better now. Keep up the great content!

its he perfect 60 percent start for me because I have never right shifted in my life since the right is to spaces farther away than the left. I got the arrows and delet still also ive seen most sets come with a small shift now a days if not you can always your a mod key.

Built on this keyboard the other day. Put some lubed glorious pandas in there. i think the only thing that annoys me about the keyboard is that it sounds very hollow. When you press down keys (especially spacebar) the sound is super load because it echoes through the case. I've ordered some foam, so going to see if that'll sort it out.

Can't you set up a custom layer where the momentary function key is out of the way and the alt key is where you want it? I don't get why they design keyboards this way. I had a KC60 (based on the GH60) and you could remap the function key wherever you wanted and make custom layers with momentary access. I believe the Poker series may have had a workaround for this problem as well. it's just stupid to lock users into a fixed/non-customizable base layer. I'm switching to a full QMK keyboard as soon as I can afford the build I want. I have a Snowfox coming in the mail and part of the reason I ordered it was because I read you could remap the function key wherever you wanted. I doubt it, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway.

@@DeViLEyE890 I haven't, but there are other users who have. I don't know if it's because I have the older version (16 digit serial with 3 pin pcb) or some other software related problem. In the meantime I got an Anne Pro 2 and loaded QMK on via the Open Anne Pro project. There's a video that shows you how to do it. Finally there's a cheap way to have a fully customizable prebuilt 60%! I don't want to steer anyone away from the Snowfox/Shadow, as it's a really well built keyboard that feels great (I love the LEDs and the flip out feet and keycaps) with the gat browns I have, but the software really kind of sucks. Supposedly they are continuing to make improvements, but all I've seen since I've gotten one is firmware releases that fix one problem while causing another. It's frustrating. Also no one from the company answers questions on their BBS/forum. Other users sometimes come up with helpful hints however.

I'm pretty sure, you can band-aid mod your stabilizers so they're less wobbly. Search it up on KZbin, there's some pretty good tutorials :)

95% of videos on youtube have linear switches and sound tests. Which is funny because if I knew that mech keebs only came with linears I would have went the other way. Good thing I tried blues and fell in love with mech keebs. Also makes me wonder why tactile switches are not more popular on youtube. And I'm starting to think it's because they simply sound nicer than a tactile in videos, but again feel is more important than sound to me.

I have an OG GK64 which I use as my main and I just bought a GK64XS open box on eBay, got it all assembled and ready to go just to realize it doesn't have the battery pack in it. Pissed off.

Cherry blacks are so scratchy, they sound awfully heavy and way to scratchy, but stabs sound descent.

I have the GK68XS. If you have a bluetooth one FN+Tab should turn on the board and Function+Spacebar should turn on bluetooth. If not paired FN+z/x/c will select the different BT profiles and start the pairing process.

Bluetooth mode for any wireless keyboard is only good for typing and overall surfing. There will be a delay for gaming.

Yes, it's aluminum, the only time the plate is plastic is when its made out of a material called polycarbonate which is uncommon.

Those gkxx makers really don't care about consumer programming it as they want ... it is decent pcb (nkeyroll over, stable bluetooth), but have some useless decisions (non fully programmable, annoying led programming, ass software, not best layout choices, microphone???, zxc as bt??? (Why not 1,2,3 which would make sense))
