The thing here is, people are not really willing to invest and take high risks because the resources are scarce and most want quick and guranteed return of investment. So most labels and producers would only invest on songs, production and type of artists that are proven to have succeeded in the past. That is why SB19 and 1Z are investing their earnings to break the norm in the Philippine music industry. They want to put out content that can compete in the global market. However, OPM with familiar sound is still the guaranteed cash cow. I hope people in the local music industry work with you so you can share your and transfer your knowledge in music production and help elevate OPM to become global.

Exactly. I work with a team that needs to have a certain target goal for attendance and our office is in Ortigas. And boy I come from Rodriguez Rizal which takes me 2 hours to go to work but I always give an extra hour because I want to log in early to take a little rest. Then here are my team mates who are from Cainta and Pasig which are just few minutes away from the office but they are the ones who are always late. i hate that we can't reach the target as a team because of them and I feel like it's so unfair to me. I am a proud Pinoy but I hate the Pinoy time mentality.

Hello Josh and Lucas! I can imagine your frustration not being able to convince SB19 to do business with you. I don’t think it’s personal, it’s just that the group is very patriotic-meaning they want to do everything using “all Filipino” talents and resources. Meaning, the mentality is if they become globally famous with your label, that will not become a Filipino product. By this time, I’m sure they know that it is not easy , but they still want to try their best. Money is no longer their main focus now - it’s I think more on accomplishing what they have envisioned from the beginning. I hope that you will continue support the boys by doing reactions and maybe they can collaborate with Eclypse in the future. Just an update: yesterday, 10/29/24, 15:27 the group received an award for Philippine advocacy for cultural heritage through their music. It’s a huge honor for a Filipino to receive this award and I’m sure this elevates the sense of responsibility for them. Thank you and God Bless!

Finally somebody is discussing about this kind of mentality about it's only Filipinos who will watch it so lazy effort is enough they will watch it anyway. Ugh I am filipina n 58 yrs and since childhood I did not cater to Filipino entertaintment movies tv because even as a child I wanted a high quality entertainment. And I grew up catering foreign 😊😊 entertaintment There was a lot of talented artists actors and actresses. But no matter how talented they are if the productions are low quality, then it's nothing. N so for many years I ended up blind n deaf when it comes to Filipino entertaintment. I only began to look back n started to give a chance to Filipino entertaintment When SB19 passed my radar on YT and it was the first month of pandemic lockdown. And I saw a ray of hope. And I thought perhaps it's time to appreciate PH talent. I hope people in PH industries will step up and upgrade.😊

There's a lot to unbox in this episode. You guys covered a good number of topics which the industry in general need to take into consideration if they want to compete internationally. The "good enough" and "filipino time" culture are really perennial problems in the Philippines. And those might have deeper issues in Philippine society in general because they are accepted as norm. Filipinos usually brush it off as carefree island culture. It'll be interesting what ideas you guys come up with on how to circumvent this situation because obviously changing Filipino culture is a really tall order. Having this conversation may be a good start to change some people's mindsets. It's about time Filipinos really shouldn't settle for mediocrity, in all aspects of the industry. If artists are striving hard, everyone around -- sound engineers, producers, event organizers, etc should be held to the same standard. Given that standards aren't common, may be an approach to coming up with a set of standards for each vertical and propagating them to the industry might shake down (or up) the industry.

Interesting. I’ve noticed that Filipinos in the diaspora to Western countries for example keep the culture’s time and try to match or even over/out-perform those of locals. Filipinos have it in them I believe… There’s so many to blame I think in the Philippines and a fix can feel like so out of reach
@JoeBigBoiАй бұрын
@@joyfpontanar As someone who just came back to the Philippines for the first time in 20 years, I really am experiencing a reverse culture shock. I'm slowly adjusting though but to your point, Filipinos are chameleons, especially in other countries where compensation is commensurate to the efforts they put in and the standards they are held to. That's why changing the whole culture will be very difficult as it's rooted more in social and governmental issues. It'll be ideal if Filipinos rise to the occasion but expecting that will take decades. It's definitely a paradigm shift. What we could do is piece-meal change and that can start in specific industries where Filipinos are passionate about, such as the entertainment industry. And that will hopefully organically revolutionize other aspects of the society.

So many things to unpack here. First, establishing a new company in whatever industry is so challenging already, what more in a whole different country, culture, context, etc, etc. The cultural difference will be a big factor to take in. For sure you need to adjust to things that cannot change overnight. There are studies on differences of how the global north and global south treat time and that is not to excuse how bad it really is but you need to navigate that and its underlying factors. I wrote a paper on it during my university days lightyears ago. You have your own biases and beliefs and shedding that to be culturally sensitive and adapt when you can, change what you have control over, and work around what you can will be an intricate balance for sure. I also understand your point on K-Pop and how the target audience is somehow similar if you look at the global scene. For the group acts, I somehow agree that the audience they would need to tap into are the same but maybe P-Pop has a different flavor to offer than the idol culture that K-Pop is known for. Maybe we need to find that niche to set it apart from the usual fan service/visuals that K-Pop idols are known for. Also it took Korea so many generations of their K-pop acts (spanning more than a decade) to reach its level today and P-Pop is just a mere infant. That is with the Korean government injecting funding to their entertainment industry which the Philippines will probably not do with our state of affairs/politics. We have a long way to go and kudos to you if you have the patience and passion to hopefully see it bear fruits in the future.

You’re still polite in putting it out how people here are so disrespectful with each other’s time. One of the reason economic growth is so slow. I salute your bravery to do business here and seeing a lot of potential in the music business that our own Filipino businessmen don’t see. Josh and Lucas, this are trying times for you but I think you are also creating an opportunity for everyone (including yourselves) to grow. I think you should keep this kind of content going because Filipinos nowadays are too spoiled on YT being told how great and hospitable they are, but are not getting any other perspectives as to why in spite of the kindness, they are rock bottom in other aspects of living. Perspectives like this, especially coming from people who came from a more successful country in general should learn why the machine somewhere else works better than the Philippines in spite of the rich talent available. Please do not give up, hang in there and show everyone the value of time, quality of effort, and respect for time because in the end, it is a win win situation for everyone if everybody grows not only with their personal abilities, but in terms of mindset and how they operate in society in general.

It's deep-rooted; the slave mentality and the control of the Catholic religion. Post colonial Filipinos passed down these traits to their descendants, so we are wired to be slaves and to obey and 'idolize', and settle for what's less and what's given to them. So you are spot-on when it comes to the fans. Filipinos will wait on their 'idols' no matter what. And we wonder why k-pop and k-drama got this big? It's the army of Filipinos. Sandara Park and her group got so huge because of Filipinos. Filipinos fans will stream and vote for their 'idols' until their eyes pop out and their fingers numb. I was personally shocked when I connected with SB19's Atin online. They are hardcore, and they are doing it for the love of their idols. This is why their idols are winning fan-based awards. And this also happening to international beauty pageants. I've never seen such dedication and passion. There's always that line between admiration and obsession. Going back to my point, Filipinos settle for less. "Aww, no electricity? Oh, it's okay. It'll be back. Yay, light's back!" "Oh, the politicians stole money that's supposed to be for the children's education. Oh, well. It's okay, at least our kids go to school." "Oh, the Billboard Philippines f^*d up SB19's stint? Not cool, but at least the boys did well, and were so professional about it. So proud of them!" I MEAN. Yeah so Filipinos will settle for less, so there is no necessity or urgency to IMPROVE or get better. Filipinos settle, just like a slave. I know the truth hurts, but that's how deep-rooted this centuries old problem is. Still, I'm hopeful, Filipinos will one day wake up break free from these chains. It's not okay. We want the best!
@pebsstonesteel1424Ай бұрын
Excuse me. But you may have a slave mentality. And the Catholic Church did not and does not control Filipino Catholics. There are a lot of Filipinos who claims to be Catholic but are not practicing their faith. So it does not mean they are controlled by the Church. I'm Catholic and I am not controlled by the Church. I believe in my Church that teaches me to follow Christ. So please don't spout such nonsense. I'm Filipino and have never had a slave mentality. And I do not believe other Filipinos will agree with you. Share your two cents but don't speak about stuff you don't know about.

Nepotism is prevalent in the entertainment industry. Connection and big back ups already paved the artist way. And, for those who don't have the connections and big back ups,will have to work hard to break in. Lucky for those artist who persevered and got the break but so many very talented ones just gave up because doors are not being opened for them. People also support nepotism. Eg: if an artist have a child, people already paving the way for this child to be the next such and such and big companies are already cashing on them to be the next endorser because of their parent/s status in the industry. This where I like the western way, in where they open an audition and give anyone a chance. Where else, the Philippines still have these mindset of " let's give this project to such and such cos they are the famous right now or cos they are the children or belong to a family of these known artist". Their future in the industry have been carved the moment they were conceived.

it's good to get a glimpse inside the local music industry for us outsiders that are just regular fans and consumers of music. the positive and negative aspects that can be improved more if we want philippines on the international music scene, like local producers should be willing to invest more on the talents...go all out with the support. the road is tough ahead, stay positive guys and continue doing what you love to do!
