It's funny they were already talking about Lewis Oil on Doug Marland's watch. Several Lewis family characters like HB were mentioned I believe even though they hadn't been on screen yet. I wonder if Marland planned on introducing and making Josh and Trish's family front burner before Pam Long and Gail Kobe took over brought in many family members and really made them a core family.

@coolwafferman Confusing! Deborah May played Dr. Renee Dubois on GL from 1979-80, then Ivy Pierce also known as Brenda Lowry from 1982-83 on GL!

This was Doug Marland`s storytelling what a mistake Alan Potter made with Jane Elliot GL could not beat GH but at the time what show could. This was one of GL`s golden era`s the show was always a solid number #3 or #4 in the ratings at this time. Marland might have stayed as Head Writer another 3 years or more who knows. Looking back a major gaf by Potter.

It was a huge mistake letting Marland go. A few years later, P&G was hot to bring him back and gave him a choice - GL or ATWT. I love what he did with ATWT but GL really could have used the help after Hammer and Kobe ruined it.

Cool clip. Vanessa was a piece of work, back-in-the day. Lol. Her snarky banter with Josh was interesting. She'd go on to marry his brother Billy in a few years....and morph into a heroine.

wow...that was a thrilling scene with Mike and Goff...it was mentioned it was someone else playing the character in Mike's flashback...I wish I had seen these episodes the first time around. my memory goes back to 1983/1984...in bits and pieces, at that...but the books I have on GL remind me of events that happened.

Ah, Doug Marland loved a good action sequence on a tram! That device popped up on ATWT with Frannie & Darryl 10 years later.

@dontabaltimore1974 Actually, GH was losing viewers around this time with the big departure of actress Genie Francis (Laura Spencer). Plus, GH had a very stupid storyline going on at this time with an unknown Demi Moore (Jackie Templeton) involving a mystery man with so-called "special powers" name David Gray. GH had gotten ridiculous by this point, that's why alot of people started switching over to watching GL. Also, GL won the Emmy that year (1982) for "Outstanding Daytime Drama."

Donta I was a huge GH fan at the time but I had discovered GL a short time earlier due to the Roger Thorpe story. GL did a good job staying competitive with GH. But GH was just to much of a beast to over come. They reached 17 million in 1982 even after Genie Francis left as Laura, lol. I started to fall away from GL after they killed off Roger.

I dont know why I made this comment - I didn't even watch Guiding Light back then. I don't know any of what I wrote.

I believe her name was Ivy Pierce and I think she was an undercover fed working with Mike Bauer on investigating Alan.
