Hannah Hummel checks in on our behalf for the Glacier Express: The journey starts in the winter sports resort of St. Moritz, a vacation destination for the jet set. The eight-hour journey will take her to Zermatt on the Matterhorn - one of the Swiss Alps’ highest peaks. Along the way, the train traverses a pass some 2,000 meters up, crossed almost 300 bridges and trundles through 91 tunnels. Travelers can marvel at panoramas of spectacular mountain scenery through the train’s
extra-large windows.
On the journey, enjoy the exclusive on-board service including a three-course meal of Swiss cuisine. Tickets in Excellence Class cost 650 euros, giving you a seven-course meal with wine pairing, champagne, and even a concierge.
Who wouldn't want to take a trip?

I've been on the Chur to St. Moritz stretch, it's astonishingly beautiful. Best option is to look out for the special one day discount tickets from SBB in advance, which allow you to travel for 24 hours anywhere in Switzerland on the train, bus and some ferries. (Otherwise it's very expensive!)

I'm planning my trip and from what I see there are no direct local trains on this route. In 2nd class prices are the same for local trains with changes and for expresses, your only have to pay an additional reservation fee if you want to go with the express. And to my opinion it's worth it, especially when you have your luggage with you. However local trains seem to be a better option for Bernina, if you're having a day trip and don't have to carry your suitcase.

@@DWTravel "DW is a public broadcaster financed by the German federal tax budget" So still I have to pay for entertaining an international audience with my hard earned money with no benefits and no cancellation option. It's unnecessary to have even something ontop of GEZ only to spread more of our ideology out to the world. Sure, the writer I am responding to has a nice job and therefore we cant get an agreement because of bias. Same as in china, North Korea and everywhere around the globe where dictators use that mechanism to influence people. But yeah we are the "good" one and it's different here right 😉

We're Dutch, we own a chalet in Mattertal close to Zermatt. We travelled with the glacier express to Sankt Moritz and back the other day. The train is modern but the train tracks much be old. The train goes very slow and the train journey is not very comfortable. After more than 8 hours we're glad to get out. Views are beautiful. Zermatt is car-free, making it a more beautiful place than St. Moritz.

During the summer it is possible to travel with trains hauled by rack-and-pinion steam locomotives along the Furka summit line, along which the GLACIER EXPRESS traveled before the opening of the Furka base tunnel to traffic. The company is called DFB (Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke) which is the anagram of the acronym of the company BFD (Brig - Furka - Disentis) which initially managed the railway which was then sold to the FO company (Furka Oberalp)

I never rode the Glacier Express but enjoyed rides on the Furka-Oberalp and Rhätiche Bahn a couple times in the 1980s. There are some details that are wrong in this video. First is the obvious one that the passage over the Furka was impossible during winter because not only did the snow block it, but there was an entire bridge that had to be disassembled/reassembled every year because otherwise Mother Nature would tear it down. Also, until the opening of the Furka base tunnel, the highest point was not the Oberalppass but the Furkapass. For anyone actually caring about the trains, I suggest they look at the heritage trains still operating part if the old track. Lots of videos on YT.

😘 Good Day Hannah I'm a single white (60 yrs young) born-again Christian man living alone in Southern Coastal Maine. This morning, Tues. 11.21.23, I sat in family (living room) with fresh cup of morning coffee, and I found this KZbin Video on our internet TV, and I wanted to search to watch and discovery what tourist's might enjoy traveling by luxurious train through the beautiful European countryside of Switzerland. And, at the beginning of your video introduction , I . . . uh never saw a young attractive woman , like yourself . . . uh , well twinkle your eyes so dramatically before, almost as if you are subconsciously inviting your KZbin audience to " pay attention" to how I express my pleasure, by studying my beautiful facial expression and flamboyant emphasis on the "eyes" . . . I haven't known an American travel guide woman or women to be so . . . expressive flamboyant as European women. I have never traveled internationally, as I have never applied for a U.S. Passport in my life. However, I did serve for ( 3 years) as a New Hampshire Army National Guardsman soldier (1986-89) and (we) drove to a Canadian Airforce Base in the wilderness beyond Quebec, Canada. So, this was the only time, I traveled outside U.S. for our two week summer military training camp. What really impressed me, was making friendships with Canadian Airforce personnel. The charming Canadian men always speak so " Ehh Top of the Morning to you!" Funny! Well, I was recently sitting with a group of men and women in a private home, and I was asked, "If you could choose one country to visit and travel in the world, where would you go? Hmm. . . My first love ❤️ is the Land of Israel, yet traveling to this country during a regional national war with Arab Palestinians in Gaza territory is would not be advised by the U.S. State Department, who process all U.S. citizens passports. Therefore, I answered, " I would like to travel Switzerland alone, or with a friend . . . And, I would enjoy traveling on the Switzerland's "Glacier Train" and the rail train window views of the mountains and valley's are magical views. Well, I am glad my Beloved ELOHIM {Creator GOD} delighted me to write and share my astonishment of observing your foreign "flamboyant dramatic" personality travel enthusiasm with your (DW Travel) KZbin Channel. ❤ OH your name " Hannah" is a biblical {Hebrew) name, one of my favorite Holy woman in the Old Testament Bible. Bye, Hannah 💋 😘 (Tues. 11.21.23 @8:22am Maine 🇺🇸

In 1981 I rode the Furka-Oberalp train Brig-Disentis (not the overpriced Glacier "Express"). In 1989 I returned with my bike and kicked off a "cheater's tour" by riding the local trains up from Chur to the Oberalppass. As I was getting ready to start cycling, the Glacier Express passed me. But as I rode past the lake near the summit and started going downhill, I caught up with the train! People were hanging out the windows, taking pictures, waving and cheering me on as I passed them. So I stopped and photographed them as they passed me. More happy waving. Then I let go of my brakes, passed the train again, stopped at the next serpentine bend, took more pictures, repeat at the next hairpin, then the next. The people on the train eventually got tired of waving at me. Presumably, they were wondering why they'd paid such a hefty surcharge to ride on an "express" train that kept getting overtaken by a cyclist, over and over...

Nowhere. It qualifies as an "express" by not stopping at a number of intermediate stations, which makes it slightly faster on average. Same way as the New York subway has express trains that zoom past some stations but actually go the same speed as the regulars on the tracks.

the blue collar workers always tell the truth listen to them, notice how the train driver has no hesitation to say its dangerous and any human error can lead to tragedy, but i will bet you top dollar if u talk to the execs of that company, the local govt officials they will make grand statements abt its safety. ppl need to understand that all human creation is susceptible to flaws and breaking down.

Actually, the main danger is probably from nature. The drivers always have to look out for rocks that may have fallen on the tracks and can cause a derailment.
