I do this with my suburban during hunting season when we go back to camp to cook if it's raining. I use rare earth Magnets to hold the tarp to the suburban top. But I do need some poles like those instead of cutting saplings.

2 inch dollar store magnet hooks stick tenaciously to car roofs. Awesome for awning attachment with a tarp and very adjustable. I use your system as well, maybe with a dollar store shower curtain.

Love the Green Elephant poles, I have/use half a dozen of them. I too use a tarp on my rig (Tahoe), 10'x20'. I span the entire roof (sideways) and it hangs out over my rear doors, extends out to the side far enough to use the side of my rig as a wall, a roof, and dropped down to the ground as another wall, open at the front/back. Gives me lots of options for use. I can use a cot, or, mostly I use my McLean Metalworks hammock stand with the optional device which secures it to my rig's tire/wheel with a heavy ratchet strap, then the receiver portion slides into that, so I'm parallel to the side of my rig as I sleep. I keep multiple tarps also, depending upon what I need.

I camped out of the back of my truck a lot ! And very similar to what you’re doing. A 10x10 tarp with a cap on the truck . Blowup mattress in the back or I use to back up to a close tree and them hook my hammock from my truck to the tree ! I eventually got an 8x8 pop up that I used as well . I ran with that set up long time . Out door concerts , camping , you name it .

The versatility of a Tarp is second to none! If you would like to take it one step further check out ForceProtector - Adapter Shade Panel. ThermaShield technology with multiple attachment setups. No roof rack needed. Loving the channel and enjoying all the great advice. Currently working through all of your knot videos. Thank you!

Made the move from a large awning to a tarp system based on ForceProtector Gear’s ASP and 10’ x 6’ Thermashield blankets. While I’m still experimenting with them, the ASP’s quick set-up off the back of my Jeep is awesome and packs up small. Add the heat reduction ability of these tarps and they’re far superior to a regular awning.

FPG is top shelf! Own some pieces and have seen the Adapter Shade set up on their site. Looks much easier than just a tarp!
@fredg19303 жыл бұрын
^this. Been using the ForceProtector Thermashield for years. It has multiple uses for sure. I've used it off the side of my van like the adaptor shade panel they sell now. I've also used it for camping off the motorcycle was a sleeping canopy attached to the motorcycle. There was another time we were riding in 30°weather and 25mph winds. One of the guys in our group ran out of fuel and I stayed with him while someone went to get fuel. It was freezing with no shelter so we wrapped up in the Thermashield and it was toasty warm. Yes, it costs more than a tarp but has many uses, including keeping you warm or reflecting the heat from the blazing sun.

Having a second watch, thought I'd add as an aside, loving this series. Bought my Jeep a few years ago (not the Gladiator version) for a similar purpose down the road. Had been looking for info like this and finding it piecemail. This has been a godsend. Another suggestion would be seeing that hammock stand (unless you've already posted a review, I may have missed it). I've looked at a few, but I'm rather large, 6'4", so I'm never sure if some will work or not.

That`s a good setup even if you don`t have a topper. You can put the Magnets on the tarp and over your Truck Cab so you can leave the window down if you had to stay in toy Cab .

You have a great setup. Now I don't feel as bad about camping out of my Dodge Ram. I can get back in the woods away from most people. I can take a cast iron Dutch oven and skillet and it cuts down on walking around with a heavy pack. These trucks get us old guys out in the woods. Lol

I've had a few ice scrapers/snow brushes that used similar extendable, twist-to-tighten pole systems and they worked great for a season or two but eventually gave up the ghost by permanently locking while extended or not locking at all. For $55 a pair I would hope you would get plenty of use out of these poles, but you never know... I'd be really interested in a long-term-use review video on these poles.

Just in time! I have been looking for different ways to add some shade off the back on my truck. What are some other systems or ideas that you went thru before you landed with this one? Just trying to see if something else may be a better option for me. It would be cool to see that large tarp setup as well!
@marzcapone99393 жыл бұрын
Sort of related....we used a longer rope, stretched between trees. We fed the rope through all the grommets on one end of a tarp. Used a ratchet strap at the other end to keep the rope nice a tight. The tarp can now be moved along the length of the rope, like a shower curtain, the other end can be attached to what ever. If you used a camper top, create some attachment points, or extend some rope over the truck to trees, the other side of the truck, logs, or whatever.

I bet you could put a little black tap on one side of magnet for protection
@craigmooring20913 жыл бұрын
If you put it up for shade, I don't get why you did it black side up. In blazing daylight, I would rig it shiny side up to reflect as much sun as possible away rather than black side up which would tend to convert a lot of light to heat.
