In answer to your question about the sister, yes, she drugs him. It’s the only way to keep herself safe from his advances. She’s playing the game long enough to save herself, her son, and Rome. In the extended scenes you see her say he needs to die but she’s sad that it’s come to that. All she wanted was her brother to be a good man but she had to give that up and accept he needed to die.

18:17 All Caesars were dictators, including Marcus Aurelius. He just happened to be a wise, just dictator, whereas Commodus was the opposite. "Dictator" is not synonymous with "Tyrant". It just means that one man has absolute power.

He got best supporting Oscar for 2000, with Crowe taking Best Actor, I believe. Marcus Aurelius was a real figure, as well as Commodus, a titanic douchebag who makes most of the top 5 lists of Rome's worst Emperors. He set the empire up for 100 years of instability. According to legend, a conspiracy got to him by hiring an athlete he was fanboying about to strangle him, which is the anecdotal basis for the film, but other than that, it's just a movie.

I love the message in this movie, which is no matter how much power you have, even if you are the most powerful man in the world, if you don't have honor and morals, if you are evil, prideful, arrogant and don't respect your fellow man, you will inevitably fall. On the flipside, if tou are a person of honor and integrity, you are courageous and do right by those around you and selflessly fught for what's right, that no matter how low you start from, you will inevitably RISE

As far as being historically accurate, _Gladiator_ does accurately depict the Roman culture, the gladiators as enslaved entertainers, the political intrigue, etc. However, there was no general named Maximus -- he is an amalgam of several historical figures. There was an emperor Marcus Aurelius, followed by his son Commodus, who did fight sometimes as a gladiator in the Coliseum, until the Senate, which grew impatient with his ineffective rule and dishonoring of his title, paid off his training partner to assassinate him. There is also no record of him smothering his father, whom history records as having died of natural causes. Which it would, if the secret murder shown in the movie had actually happened....

This is DEFINITELY in my Top 10 movies EVER. And it did win plenty of Academy Awards💖 BTW, Joaquin Phoenix improvised the shouting "Am I not merciful?" to his sister in the movie, so her reaction was real. Also, Maximus had no choice to be merciful to Commodus, even if he had disabled him, because Commodous would have immediately ordered Lucius to be killed. (Of course General Quintas did seem to finally get some courage when he disobeyed the Emporer and ordered his men to "Sheath your swords!" But Maximus sure couldn't count on it.) Great reaction!

Another movie about a gladiator, and in some ways a precursor to this, is Spartacus. Directed by Stanley Kubrick and staring Kirk Douglas, Lawrence Olivier, Tony Curtis and Charles Laughton, it's an old school epic that encompasses spectacle, political intrigue and inspiration. It's based on a true story and has held up quite well. Certainly Ridley Scott had it on his mind the entire time he was shooting this movie. Give it a shot. I think you will like it.

Guy's, your editing is pro level, every key moment was captured. Such a great movie and I either love watching reactions to it (if done well) or hate them(if done wrong). I never felt you guy weren't paying attention and even when y'all talked over a line a bit you would retrace yourself, very mature for lack of a better word. There are many great epic movies that I look forward to watching with you guys. That said; Your critiques are a little rough and using dating as a denominator isn't even relevant. Stating "for a movies made way back in 2003..." shouldn't be a consideration. I find very few(if any) newer movies hold a candle to older epics, especially CGI filled crap that's pumped out today with corny one-liners and goofy character development. IMHO anything less than 9 can't be taken seriously. Epics to watch: Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption( both adaptations from Stephan King books and directed by Frank Darabont), 300 by Zack Snyder, The Last Samurai with Ken Watanabe and Tom Cruise(Cruise's best acting), Forrest Gump by Robert Zemeckis.

Maximus is a fictional character. Marcus made sure Commudus took the throne after he died but he really was a bad man & bad emperor. Lucilla did hatch a plan to kill him but he found out. He exiled her & killed her coconspirators. He did perform in the Coliseum with such feats as fighting with 50 ostriches. He was eventually murdered.

This movie and Cinderella Man were 2 of Russel Crowe's best films IMO . All of the actors nailed it or it wouldn't have been able to draw a viewer into the story as well as it did. Some of those scenes were so intense due to the tension from the script, the acting and the way the scene was shot. Great reaction! I disagree that there is no 10 movie thouigh! When One movie is the one that sets the standard for others to beat, it becomes a 10. One has to take into account the technology at the time the movie was filmed, and the genre, but In my opinion, when "The exorcist" was released, it was a 10 for the scary movie genre. I think that movie ruined all movies that were supposed to be scary that came after. I watch a "scary" movie now and go "meh" ....It was the first movie to set up the possession themed films that we are now all used to now.

"You are in Elysium ... you are already dead" is very reminiscent of Captain Ronald Speirs' statement to Pvt. Albert Blithe in "Band of Brothers": "We're all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there's still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier's supposed to function. Without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it." The older gentleman who spoke to the group of slaves (future gladiators) was himself, years ago, a gladiator; he's now a procurer of new candidates for the various coliseums in the Roman Empire. Compare/contrast: "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!" vs. "AM I NOT MERCIFUL?!"

During his reign Caesar was a name not a tittle and therefore his whole male side of his family were Caeser's including his Father Senator Gaius Caeser. It did not become an official tittle until his adopted son Octavian became emperor.

Gaius Julius Caesar was a man among men in a time when just being an ordinary man was a tough chore. It's surprising that when Shakespeare has his Mark Antony declaim, "His life was gentle, and the elements / So mix'd in him that Nature might stand up / And say to all the world, This was a man!", he is speaking over the body of Brutus, Caesar's most infamous slayer. The aura of Caesar was a means of keeping his memory bright unto the latest generation, and his name became so identified with the might of Rome that even among the rulers of alien cultures like Germany and Russia, it was desirable to lay claim to the name in a variant form. But I suspect that the name became a truly impersonal *title* once the aura was officially acknowledged in a man who was not of the Julio-Claudian family (to wit, Vespasian). Perhaps I'm mistaken - but it seems a reasonable thing to suppose. 🏛️ 🤔

@@jcarlovitch the Julius part is really the more critical part of his name. And the later title was Augustus. The names we assign to emperors were usually not what they were called, but kinda nicknames we use because they're distinct and brief.

historic notes Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 26 April 121 - 17 March 180 was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, the last of the rulers known, but later, as the Five Good Emperors and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calm, and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. Marcus Aurelius was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus, and the heiress Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandfather. After Hadrian's adoptive son, Aelius Caesar, died in 138, the emperor adopted Marcus's uncle Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and Lucius, the son of Aelius. Hadrian died that year, and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145. After Antoninus died in 161, Marcus Aurelius acceded to the throne alongside his adoptive brother, who reigned under the name Lucius Verus. Under his rule the Roman Empire witnessed heavy military conflict. In the East, the Romans fought successfully with a revitalized Parthian Empire and the rebel Kingdom of Armenia. Marcus defeated the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Sarmatian Iazyges in the Marcomannic Wars; however, these and other Germanic peoples began to represent a troubling reality for the Empire. He modified the silver purity of the Roman currency, the denarius. The persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire appears to have increased during his reign, but his involvement in this is unlikely since there is no record of early Christians in the 2nd century calling him a persecutor, and Tertullian even called Marcus a "protector of Christians".The Antonine Plague broke out in 165 or 166 and devastated the population of the Roman Empire, causing the deaths of five to ten million people. Lucius Verus may have died from the plague in 169.Unlike some of his predecessors, Marcus chose not to adopt an heir. His children included Lucilla, who married Lucius, and Commodus, whose succession after Marcus has been a subject of debate among both contemporary and modern historians. The Column and Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius still stand in Rome, where they were erected in celebration of his military victories. Meditations, the writings of "the philosopher" - as contemporary biographers called Marcus - are a significant source of the modern understanding of ancient Stoic philosophy. These writings have been praised by fellow writers, philosophers, monarchs, and politicians centuries after his death. Commodus 31 August 161 - 31 December 192 was a Roman emperor who ruled from 177 to 192. He served jointly with his father Marcus Aurelius from 177 until the latter's death in 180, and thereafter he reigned alone until his assassination. His reign is commonly thought as marking the end of a golden age of peace and prosperity in the history of the Roman Empire the Pax Romana. Commodus accompanied his father during the Marcomannic Wars in 172 and on a tour of the Eastern provinces in 176. The following year he became the youngest emperor and consul up to that point, at the age of 16. During his solo reign, the Roman Empire enjoyed reduced military conflict compared with the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Intrigues and conspiracies abounded, leading Commodus to revert to an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership, culminating in his creating a deific personality cult, including his performing as a gladiator in the Colosseum. Throughout his reign, Commodus entrusted the management of affairs to his palace chamberlain and praetorian prefects, namely Saoterus, Perennis and Cleander. Commodus' assassination in 192, by a wrestler in the bath who held him underwater, marked the end of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. He was succeeded by Pertinax, the first emperor in the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors.

After Gaius Julius, "Caesar" become a title used not only by the roman empire, but also by the Ottoman and Bizantine empires. So being a Caesar ment being an Emperor. It was the equivalent of Zar in Russia and/or Kaiser in Germany. There's an interesting fact about the thumb-up/down thing: It's not mantioned at all in any roman scriptures, it's all based on a painting of that era, portraying a Gladiator receiving a "thumb down" from the emperor, and the meaning is still debated. Someone figured out it might say "kill him", but others argued it could be "sheathing the sword", so the opposite.

Without sounding rude, but I feel it's a generational thing to want to stretch this film out into 3 movies. It's a modern trend for studios to extend a concept out through multiple films to maximise profit, and in my opinion, loses quality in doing so. I love that this is a standalone film. Makes it more impactful. Good stories well told can fit a lot in a short amount of time.

Completely historically wrong, but it was such a great movie. Just think of it as fiction. A great fictional story. Great acting, all around great acting.

Almost everyone thinks that the thumbs up means that the defeated gladiator gets to live on. However, it is the absolute opposite. With the raised thumb, which was passed by the throat as if cutting someone's throat demanded "DEATH". The clenched fist, with the thumb laid on, was the sign for "GRACE". The final decision, however, lay with the Emperor, who mostly agreed with the opinion of the audience.

In one script I’ve about they had Russell Crowe survive in it which makes no sense that would’ve ruined the ending for me. That ending is as close to perfect as you can get.
