This was my mom's favorite movie. It was the first ever "adult" movie I was allowed to watch. We watched it so many times together when I was little. She passed away a few weeks ago after battling cancer a second time. The title and vibes of this song fit so perfectly with how I feel. I'm sad she's gone but I'm glad she's free of her cancer pains and is in a better place Edit (6/30/22): Thank you to everyone for the kind words. I had a traumatic time as a teenager. I’d come home from college and watch this with my parrot that I had since 5yo. I missed him all day, and that little guy used to protect me from my abusive mother by maiming her neck, taking the heat as she threw him into the wall. He’s the only thing I’ve had, who showed unconditional love. I’d come home watch Gladiator and sit with him. After the movie was over the theme song would be on loop and I’d sit there loving him and rubbing his little fluffy head. We’d fall asleep like that, to wake up and fight in the arena again the next day. I’m older now, revisiting this to find that love again. God bless his little warrior heart.

Like Maximus, his fight was over only after he lived long enough to ensure everything was okay for his family. My mother passed away last month after 50 happy years on Earth, she was the victim of a bicycle accident 3 years ago and was in a coma up till now. Gladiator was one of her favorite movies and the scene when Maximus walks across the field to join his family never failed to make her cry even after countless rewatches over the years. This song is just too good and it will be played as the final song for her funeral as she takes her final trip across the fields. Everytime I listen to it I get all warm and happy and I can feel her presence somehow. It is a sad song but it is also hopeful, it gives me hope that I will one day see her again when it’s my turn to walk across the fields...but not yet, not yet.

He stands alone, his blade dripping with the final justice delivered. The arena falls silent, the weight of his victory sinking deep within his soul, the crowd watching in hushed reverence. He feels the heaviness of his body, the pain of his wounds, and the finality of his journey. As he stumbles forward, a faint smile graces his lips - his family avenged, his honor restored. He collapses in the sands, his fight is done, his spirit unshackled - now he is free.

When I was 6 years old I snuck behind the couch to watch this movie way past my bedtime. My parents had basically no idea, but towards the end of the movie I was crying because Maximus died. I can't explain it, but the thrill of being caught, plus watching such a great movie and seeing it for the first time was so special. I'll never have that experience again.

After reading the comments, I don't think you good people have the right idea. This isn't a song about the end, or about grief, or loss. It's about victory. It's about being free. In the end of all things, we cast off the chains of what held us back. We are free. No one binds us, nothing holds us. We learn that our only limitations are that which we set for ourselves. Turn your sails to the wind, ride the Great Waters, and fly. Only in death does duty end, and it's not your time yet. Ride the wind, sail the ocean, and fly. Then you will be free.

He died and was honored to this song. It is melancholy at best. I can think of better “victory” songs. This makes you sit back and remember … what’s important.

The beauty of music is that everyone can experience it in their own way. if for some people it's of grief and helps them mourn or remember their loved ones, then that's beautiful :)
@popamihnea66953 жыл бұрын
Depends. You are right but for everyone freedom is different. For some freedom might have this tragic aspect of escaping the suffering or bring unfulfilled in this existence even if there is nothing beyond so do not judge them. This song is so beautiful it relates to every possible interpretation of freedom

My Grandfather, A Korea and Vietnam Veteran, was laid to rest after battling skin cancer for two long years. Two tours in two different foreign conflicts couldn't kill him, and he was able to live a long and exciting life after his three decades of service to his country. The years my brothers and I spent growing up with him, his house being only an hour away from ours, the many trips he took us on, and the stories and lessons taught to us as we grew up beside him...they will echo throughout eternity. And I will ensure his deeds and lessons live on in my children one day. Seeing him in his weak and "artificially alive" state was heartbreaking for me. Such a strong soul, trapped within an old and decaying body.....But now he is free. RIP Grandpa Bob 1933-2023

May he rest in peace. I also had a grandfather just like yours. He died on January 13th, 2021, victim of a cardiac arrest. The last thing I told him was "you're gonna be fine, I know what this feels like. But after the medications you and I will both go home", but God took him and I went home alone that night. The afternoon of the day when he passed away I invited him for a walk, and he replied "I'm not in the mood right now, but tomorrow I'll go", and I thought to myself that I would join him and we would chat. He was a happy old man, full of stories. We in fact walked together the other day, but he was laying dead in his coffin and I was one of the people who carried it to the tomb. May you rest in peace, my beloved grandpa Luiz Carlos Dias Martins.
