The Commonwealth Games returned to Britain as it went to Glasgow for the 20th edition, which took place from 23 July to 4 August 2014. It was the third time that Scotland had played host after 1970 and 1986, both of which were held in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
There were 71 nations participating at the Glasgow Games with approximately 4,950 competing athletes, which makes it one of the largest Commonwealth Games staged to date. A total of 18 sports and 261 medal events were contested at Glasgow, which include a record 22 para-sport events in five different sports as well as Para track cycling, and new disciplines such as the triathlon mixed relay event, more shooting events for women, and women's boxing.
The 2014 edition was notable for the successes of all the Home Nations of the United Kingdom, with hosts Scotland, Wales, and England - the topnotchers on the medal count with 58 golds and 174 medals of any color - achieving their largest ever gold medal hauls and overall medal hauls at a Commonwealth Games.
The Glasgow Games received acclaim for their organization, attendance, and the public enthusiasm of the people of Scotland, with CGF chief executive Mike Hooper hailing them as "the standout games in the history of the movement".
