Glass artist Jason Mouer demonstrates a Prince Rupert's Drop to University of Washington students

Professor Jason is teaching new glass students about the physical properties of glass. Here he drops a hot blob of glass into a bucket of cold water, which cools the glass quickly, and gives the glass tremendous compression strength. The glass won't break when smashed with a hammer, but is decimated when the surface tension is released by cracking the tail with pliers.

These are really cool. What happens is that the outside of the glass drop cools and hardens almost instantly while the inside is still crazy hot. So you have the bulk of the glass in the center of the drop that is still molten and as it slowly cools it wants to condense from a molten liquid state to a solid state but it can't condense because the outside and largest surface area of the glass is already extremely hard. You can hit the drop itself with a sledge hammer up to a point and it doesn't break because again, the molten liquid glass on the inside is trying to pull itself inward (condense) so the molecules inside the drop have an immense inward facing pressure you could say. The squiggly tail of the drop cooled down roughly the same time as the outer body of the drop. So what makes this thing cool is that you can hammer the drop and it's fine. Doesn't break. But just take some little nippers and nip the tail end and the entire thing rapidly implodes because that original inward pulling force remains that way.

@@demartobey1770, you need water to rapidly cool glass, it won’t deform it either. But depending on the glass properties and the amount of heat put into it can shock it and cause it to explode in the bucket like this drop did at the end when he clipped the tail off. Glass blower here. But in all honesty you don’t even want water to cool glass. You want to kiln it and let it naturally cool off through the kiln process to stabilize it.

I have some cola bottles that have been annealed the same way. They can be held and smacked against a tree without breaking however if the inside surface is just lightly scratched (say with a piece of carborundum), the bottle will explode! The magician, Al Mann, wrote several books pertaining to this concept. The Prince Rupert Drop is referred to as “the devil’s teardrop”.

Would it still explode if you let it cool down / let's say for a week. Would the pressure still be there or would it have subsided . Just asking 😎👍
@Olisha.S
@Olisha.S 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s basically creating tempered glass. The pressure is from the outside quickly shrinking and solidifying before the inside. This creates pressure from the inside pushing out which makes it strong. But the thin tip is easy to break because of the smaller inner volume of it not reinforcing it and it just being smaller and thinner and pointed. When the inside cools down there is still a ton of internal stress. This can be seen by looking at it with polarized glasses.
