I'm from Southern Maryland and have never seen or heard of pink sea glass in my life. My bf and I are planning to move to WA eventually

The pink sea glass most likely came from the broken pieces of pink depression glass that you can often find in antique stores. I hope you make it out to enjoy the beautiful Northwest. There is so much to do and explore in this area.

I was there for the first time a few days before you and did okay. The tide was quite high. I started at the North Beach parking lot and starting walking to the point. Wow...quite a walk, especially when running from the waves. I didn't make it to the point. I did 7 miles round trip and that was enough...lol.

yes it's a great hike out. I always recommend to others to only start after the tides have dropped below 7.5'. I look for days on my tide app when there is a good low tide in the mid morning to middle of the day. I always attempt to get back to my car by about 3:30 to 4pm. Most of the days I go out the tide will return to 7.5 later in the day. Look at my. video I published a few years ago about tide concerns and tips. It provides information that is still relevant for hikes today. Keep going out... the best pieces are out around McCurdy point and down the beach about a quarter mile. That's my sweet spot.

A couple questions. What’s the best way to carry/transport your finds home? So they don’t break. And in Port Townsend, where can you park to walk to the beach?

In order to hike out to glass beach… You will need to park at the North Beach parking lot. This is located at the northern end of Kuhn St. In Port Townsend. When collecting the Seaglass most people I see out there are using a Ziploc bag about a gallon size. I wear waterproof hiking pants that have cargo type pockets on the sides. The sea glass won’t break since it’s been tumbled out there in the gravel for 50 or 60 years

What an excellent selection of glass and pottery bits and baubles you found, Tim. Will we see some jewelry made from them in the future?

Any advice on what to take glass hunting? I’ve gone crystal and shark tooth hunting before, can I assume it’s the same process? Any tips on Glass beach itself? Like should I watch out for waves, crazy animals/people?

Always bring a few bottles of water, and layers of clothing. The morning starts on the cool side but warms up through the day. I always bring a bottle of hand sanitizer to cleans my hands before eating some lunch on the beach. There are toxins throughout the rock beds and you will get sick if you don't cleanse your hands before eating. Make sure you check the tides and attempt to only go out as the tide is going out and below 7.5 feet. Anything higher and areas of the beach will be covered by the waves. Also give yourself adequate time to get back before the tide returns above 7.5 ft. The walk out to glass beach takes about an hour. Once you get out around McCurdy Point I keep on going down the beach for another quarter mile. The beach is very picked over closer to McCurdy Point and you'll have better finds farther down the beach. The only interesting animals I've seen out there are Otters and Eagles up high in the trees over-looking the beach. There are progressively more people hiking out as the Spring progresses into Summer. The really committed hikers head out as soon as the light allows and the tides are safe. Just make 7.5 feet your determining factor when to head out and when to start heading back. The people I've run into out there are always friendly and very gracious. It is such a long walk that this filters out the people with bad attitudes. Have a great time. I probably be going next Tuesday, March 30th.

Is this beach usually this empty during this time of season?
@timblair3004
@timblair3004 Жыл бұрын
oh, yes... during the early months of March and April there are not many hikers out there. I always attempt to hike out early each time to get a good start and allow for more time to hunt.

Did you go right or left from the parking lot? I went right and I hear you’re supposed to go left towards McCurdy point to get bigger sea glass. That’s just what I’ve heard. I might be going back soon so we’ll see

When you go out to the west toward McCurdy point make sure you go around the point and also go down another quarter mile. Just around the point is where most people stop and hunt. So, it is very picked over. I go down further and find my best pieces down where most people don't go. Keep trying. You will not be disappointed. I have a great hunt with many great finds almost every time I go.

At what tide level do you recommend going? I know low tide is ideal, how high up does the tide go this time of year?
@timblair3004
@timblair3004 3 жыл бұрын
I always recommend to avoid being on the North Beach which leads out to the Glass Beach area whenever the tide rises above 7.5ft. This time of year there aren't very many days when the tide dips below the 7.5 ft level for very long during the day time. The period of middle to late November until the middle of January are not good tide schedules. The tides are very low at night but quite high during the day hours. It is just what happens to the tides during this time of year. I will not be going out there until the middle of January or afterwards. Get a good tide app for your phone and program the Port Townsend area into it. Then observe the tides during this time of year.
