I live and coach in Houston TEXAS. We had a few kids leave our gym leave our gym as Level 9 and 10s to go to Karolyi’s … when they came back to visit they told us about how horrid the treatment was. If they were injured or sick they would be put into the “suck” group… food deprivation and shaming was also prevalent. Even gyms like Woga and Browns back in the 90s would food shame. ESP when it came to eating carbs… I remember the girls scraping the top off the pizza to eat it one Saturday… fearing that if any of the coaches found out they even had a bite of the crust, they’d be in big trouble. Pretty sad for 12 and 13 year olds.

Gentle correction for future reference, it's *Dianne Durham, not Diana. Also Alexander Alexandrov is one of the most legendary coaches in the history of the sport and had a well established resume by the time he was hired by the Karolyi's. The most probable reason they fired him was so as to not have to share the spotlight with someone of such great status.
@kinghill3423

In one of the competitions, 2012 I think, they said, Alexandrov was deposed from the Russian team because he was spending too much time with the gymnasts, I'm not sure if this is true or not.

Am I right? Of course I'm right Most of those girls were adults. They could have left anytime they wanted to and especially Carrie with her whiny ass.

@Rizzlergoblin578 huh? Angry? Girl please get a grip on your stupidity. This is America, we can do whatever we want to do. If I want to leave because of abuse I'll leave. Yes they were teenagers I know that but even as a teenager I knew when to leave or sneak a phone call and call my parents. I also knew there were more coaches in America that could train just as well and less abusive if that were the case. Hmmmm, come to think of it, why in gay hell would you leave a child in a compound like that and not be able to see them when you want?.....dumbass parents. There is no amount of money of fame or enough gold medals on planet earth to keep me away from my child. If I want to check on my child at 4:36AM I'm going to.

I’m curious, did Mary Lou, Kim Zmeskal, and Kerry Strug ever confess anything about him? I ask because in 1996 during the American cup Kerry did a segment and explained she left in 1992, tried with Steve Nuno, tried Tom and Laurie Forster, a gym and Tucson, and decided she wanted to go back to Bela. Boguinskaia left Belarus to train with him in 1996 as well. 🤔

Kerri left because Bela "retired" after Kim Zmeskal's disappointing performance at the 92 Olympics. She tried out the different coaches until Bela came back out of retirement to coach Dominique Moceanu. I remember hearing an interview (or fluff) where he said he agreed to coach her again along Moceanu.

Erica Stokes did NOT put the peach away. She continued Robert according to Ryan’s narrative in Little Girls in Pretty Boxes. But Karolyi did admonish her for being “fat.”

This is of course known now and okayed by the USGA! However we must point out how pervasive the fat shaming is. It’s not only gymnastics but theater n film, dance, modeling anywhere a woman is on display in some form.

Interestingly, you state that he blamed the USGF for the poor performance, because they scored the gymnast low in meets to destroy their confidence! This is actually true, but it was more the judges were in on it, it is well know that judges have biases and even today the subjectivity has only increased so the judges are "picking" winners to go with promotion of the sport! Politics is alive and well and has grown since the now there aren't any dominate coaches anymore! And, with the "new scoring" they can cover the fix easier! 😱😁🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇸

well considering Bela was 1.93 m or 6 Ft 4in and most female Gymnasts are less than 5 Ft tall though there are some exceptions such as Shannon Miller who was 5 Ft 1in etc. and with age he has shrunk 12.2 centimeters to 1.81m or 5 Ft 11.5in also competition eligibility rules have changed an Olympic hopeful has to turn 16 prior to the Olympic team trials from the year they want to compete in where as in Bela's time as a Coach it was 14 which is how Doninique Moceanu qualified for the 1996 Olympic team at 14 yrs. 9 mos. in June 1996 the two oldest girls on that team were Dominique Dawes age 19 years 8 mos. and Shannon Miller 19 years 4.5 mos. at the trials/games both in their late 40s now and both attempted to make the team a 3rd time in 2000 aged 23 Dawes Succeeded Miller withdrew do to injury. beside that the difficulty of the tumbling etc. has gotten harder over the years as has the rating of the tricks a C rated trick in 1984 was the highest rating where as is among the lower ratings now

Many coaches at Karolyi’s stayed there for over a decade. Many gymnasts stayed there for over a decade as well. Bela welcomed any Coach into his workouts, always offering help and happy to answer questions. Coaches that left were using the Karolyi’s name to land better paying jobs or positions or even a way to purchase their own gym. Plus, these coaches that left wanted the same notoriety and recognition like Karolyi. He was an easy person to use to your own advantage. Also, parents! Believe it or not many parents pushed coaches to be more strict and military style. These parents feel that works best in their own home. Bela had the energy of 4 coaches put together, it’s a big part of his success. He is right, little girls are very accepting if and only if they trust you. As they age they run into hardships like everyone of us. Maturity and experience makes one less trusting.

well the results without the Karoly's involvement in team USA more than speak for themselves. Kerri Strug vouches for Bela Karolyi and that carries far more gravitas than all these girls using victimhood as a form of social currency all trying to one-up each other with allegations of every kind to see who can pull off elite victimhood. It's a tired and predictable narrative that no one really cares about anyway. If you want to compete on a elite level in any sport sacrifices are going to be required of you. If you can't handle that just leave. These girls use their loosely related to reality accusations to explain away why they either couldn't cut it and quit. It's so obvious. Simone Biles, one of the most astonishing talented athletes of the 21st century traded her legacy of greatness for that of an epic quitter and disappointment because she was having a bad competition and didn't have the faculties to handle the adversity of being an underdog. She can say mental health platitudes all day long but it's all just her making sure she gets that golden victim card which as a result of the spoils modern society grants to a victim (legitimacy not of any importance) is apparently now more valuable than an olympic gold medal earned through self sacrifice and fulfilling the contract you make with your country when you represent yourself, your team and your nation at an Olympic competition.

@@mkoury83 Imagine being this clueless, about a sport you never even participated in. You sound like an NPD edgelord who is in need of a psychiatrist... As for Simone, she just got her 30th worlds medal, something no gymnast in FIG history has ever done before. The US team has its seventh consecutive team title, also a record. Seems like they are doing just fine without the Karolyi's. Shame they fled the country like cowards, instead of taking responsibility for their decades of child abuse.

My comment to these Americans is” you bought into it didn’t you? Where were you when the medals started coming in for the US? Where would our gymnastics be had it not been for the Karolyi’s? “ I actually went to Romania and was lucky enough to be brought in to choreograph in the 2017-2018’s and they absolutely no longer do this. The girls are taken of, they get 3 square meals a day and are allowed healthy snacks. We ate what they ate and it was all prepared by chefs at this “infamous “ school you speak of. Yes, the Karolyi’s stepped over some lines but the people you speak of are friends of mine!! Also back during this time period, speaking of the 70’s , that was unfortunately the norm. Even if they were not gymnasts, the life was terribly hard. I suggest studying the facts first before speaking on them! Mulțumesc 🙏🏻
