Just because you have 8 strings, it doesn't make your tuning lower. You can tune it to drop A. Tosin has his tuned to standard with two bottom E strings, one tuned an octave lower. If I'm not mistaken.

It's actually a modified drop E tuning with alternating fourths and fifths up until the third string, but you're obviously smart and already knew that. He's used that tuning for at least three years now.

If you want to get really specific it's a PICKING style coined by Meshuggah (hit the strings hard, palm mute hard and you get a djent). It just so happened that a bunch of bands started utilizing some of the rhythmic and tonal elements of the band and using the word as a genre. There's no use denying that it's a genre now, just because of majority rule.

You're exactly right. For the sake of the music functioning in theory, sometimes Cb and E# are written, even when they aren't commonly used. It simply depends on what key signature you're using. Are there people on here actually arguing that haha?

This song reminds me a lot of Sky Eats Airplane. Especially their first album. Although as much as I like Glass Cloud, I think Sky Eats Airplane was much more original and were doing this when it was much more ahead of it's time (I don't know why SEA isn't considered one of the main pioneers of "djenty", especially the more melodic/electronic/'core style like this). I also think Jerry Roush is ten times the clean vocalist, but Glass Cloud's vocals seem very inspired by him and their scream sounds pretty similar. I just see a lot of similarities in the sound and song structure. And the stuttering vocals are classic SEA. Kind of sucks SEA didn't get the recognition they deserved in their prime, but I feel they were just ahead of their time and people just didn't understand this style enough back then. At least a couple of their members are having some success with Zelliack at the moment.
@Pinkbun1710 жыл бұрын
Aaron Dragg I completly agree with you! That was my favorite album of all time! I think it does show his voice off better too...
@draggboy10 жыл бұрын
PInkbun17 You the man :) That album was so under appreciated. Especially now, it's almost like its non-existent even when it's so pivotal and influential (in my opinion) and just plain great to listen to. My band opened for SEA and August Burns Red right when that album came out and they had just started touring for it. Since we were opening for them and we knew the promoters and venue owners, etc, they let me and my band climb up on the huge stacks of PA speakers, about 12 feet above the stage, and we got to see EVERYTHING perfectly. It was kind of like watching Periphery perform today, except back then, no bands were that tight and machine-like. They sounded just like the album. They're also the first band I've ever heard of who's drummer played to a click because of the samples incorporated into the music.

@UnskilledGod10 жыл бұрын
It just goes to prove how stupid they are, by taking the definition from Wiki instead of making their own up.
@mikue66610 жыл бұрын
No argument here but technically djent is just a picking style for guitar as much as an arpeggio. calling any genre 'Djent" is like calling an amplifier a pedal. Its just a specific way to play. Yes, some bands (hell a lot of bands) utilize it more but that does not make it a genre. Still not argument just want to inform the ignorant. Not saying you guys are but other people.
@shatalg7 жыл бұрын
Right, and ROCK became a genre just because people 'rocked' to the music. ITS JUST A MOVEMENT OF THE BODY AND NOT A GENRE PEOPLE.

Screamo is a genre, though. Look up Orchid - Epilogue for a Car Crash Or Pg. 99, they're pretty crazy as well. Djent is a genre too, as it's more than just the heavily palm-muted guitar. Other defining characteristics: low tuned, mid-boosted guitars; bass providing most of the bottom end; heavy syncopation in guitars and drums with the bass drum accenting the guitar hits; sometimes a light, atmospheric guitar or synth; growled vocals, clean vocals at times. Djent is now a genre.
@azwethinkweiz31613 жыл бұрын
Do you people that dislike this song, the band, the members think that Glasscloud is going to debut what they believe is their favorite song off of the new record? HELL NO!!!! I love this band, their sound is original!!! Put Danza III and SEA s/t in a blender. It takes balls to combine the two. And they totally pulled it off. So, to all of the doubters.... just wait until the full length release to make a decision.

tosin embraced the term djent. he said its a movement of bands with a similar sound to their music (low tunings, off time rhythms, ambience,etc.) that came around at the same time. he said he believes djent could be used to describe the genre. just think about it. the term heavy metal was originally a song lyric ("Heavy metal thunder"- born to be wild) and that became a genre because people began to refer to music as such. Djents the same way. originally it was a tone/chord, but now its a genre.

Wikipedia: "Djent (English pronunciation: /'dʒɛnt/) also known as djent metal,[1] is a heavy metal movement that developed as a spinoff of progressive metal.[2][3] The word "djent" is an onomatopoeia for the distinctive high-gain, distorted palm-muted guitar sound employed by Meshuggah, coined by their lead guitarist, Fredrik Thordendal. Typically, the word is used to refer to music that makes use of this sound, to the sound itself, or to the scene that revolves around it."

Anyway, im not gettin in on the little fight that is going no where, But both of them have vocal talent that suits each of there bands music, so instead of arguing about whose better. both of the artists music can be improved there's no limit and nothin is perfect, plus if they didnt put in the time, effort and dedication, both sides of this fued wouldn't have the music for us to enjoy, anyone seeing the point?

Coming from the guy who actually WROTE THE ORIGINAL WIKIPEDIA PAGE... It's a stacked power chord, and ONLY a stacked power chord. Fredrik from Meshuggah did coin the word, but it was used in order to describe a stacked power chord. Find me a band that only uses the same stacked power chord for their guitar tracks and I MIGHT consider it a genre.

There are other genres named after sounds etc. for example kick and drum or twostep. Also I think it makes sense to give the djent bands their own sub genre because when most people hear the term prog metal they think more of bands like Dream Theater, Tool, Fates Warning rather than Tesseract, Monuments or Born Of Osiris.
@syphe1016 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Its an onomatopoeia. The word onomatopoeia comes from the combination of two Greek words, onoma meaning "name" and poiein meaning "to make," so onomatopoeia literally means "to make a name (or sound)." That is to say that the word means nothing more than the sound it makes. The word "boing," for example, is simply a sound effect, but one that is very useful in making writing or storytelling more expressive and vivid. Many onomatopoeic words can be verbs as well as nouns. "Slap" for instance, is not only the sound that is made by skin hitting skin, but also the action of hitting someone (usually on the face) with an open hand. (LOL) Djent is legit.
