This song is based on The Island of Dr. Moreau, a book by H. G. Wells, who also wrote War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man. It is a book about animals being surgically transformed into humans, and after the doctor who maintains their humanity dies, they begin to revert back into the animals as which they began, gaining their primal urges back as well as they lose the part of them that remembers the rules imposed upon them by the doctor. The humanised animals were unable to smile and the doctor who had "vivisected" them, as the book says, had difficulty giving them proper hands and feet. At the end of the book, when the protagonist returns to civilisation, his trauma causes him to suspect all of humanity, even himself, to possibly be these vivisected animals. Edit: Terribly sorry about the run-on sentences. Not sure how better to structure this. Also, Oingo Boingo's No Spill Blood is about the same book, but has a much different musical tone.

I know the common association with this song is The Island of Doctor Moreau, but it also reminds me of Frankenstein. The line about "five fingers to black hooves" can be related back to how, when introduced to the idea of God and creation, Frankenstein's monster sees himself in Lucifer more than in Adam. Later on the line "And my bones go cold, when I see that room" can be related back to the monster's "upbringing", spying on/learning from the human inhabitants of a small (presumably one room) cottage through cracks in the walls, learning to love and later hate that cottage because of the people living inside it. To me, this sounds the way the confrontation between Victor and the monster in the mountains sounds- the monster introducing Victor to his "zoo" of dysfunctional emotions, experiences and ideas about humans and society, an amalgam of human knowledge and philosophy without any actual humanity behind the application. (This MAY be a reach, though.)

A couple days ago me and a buddy each took 2 blotters of some really good acid. We both came to the conclusion that some molly would coincide perfectly, so we each took half a gram. I remembered that someone told me to check these guys out, so I did. BEST DECISION I'VE EVER MADE. Their music took me to a whole new place. I didn't know it was possible to feel this way about music. I know I've only been a fan for a short period, but I can honestly say that I'll be a fan for life.

This song is the welcoming to a zoo of imaginary creatures by a snake, slowly crawling up a tree, as the narrator's, first the owner of the zoo, then to the snake, and finally to a man who has no concept of love as he slowly drinks a cup of whiskey and sits, staring at a wall. The next narrator is a wandering native tribal man, seeing a volcano. The last narrator is the culmination of them all merging into a "man." I am so so high

Listening to this song reminds of the multiplicity of human personality and duality in human nature. People are grafted from different aspects of experience in their lives, but there always seems to be a balance: two sides of the same coin, almost always visible in himans. What you see in one person is the opposite elsewhere. The gentility of angels fade to warlike hysterics when in hell; its like this song just subtly tries to explain that humankind is something that it itself has yet to recognize; manmade but still a part of nature. Mechanical and organic. Damn this song makes you think.

I did some digging and found that this song is loosely based off a book and the story of this "crooked man" and the "boy" is quite chilling yet sad. So let's look at the meaning in each line: Put your hand down boy - you the listener is the "boy", and are also confused as to where you are or how you got there Welcome to my zoo - the location is a type of attraction/freak show Put your head inside My big black wild - he is letting you in his head, to tell you his thoughts while I can still help you - you may be in some form of danger See the snake baboon Funky, chic and smooth - inhabitants of this "zoo" are of a peculiar type Honey can you spy - you should be on guard The divine ape-swine - these animals are chimeras, a combination of two different species Cause he can see you - it's actually you who are being watched and not the other way around I’m a man, I’m a twisted fool - He's claiming to be a man My hands are twisted too - but his physical appearance is warped and twisted into something else Five fingers to black hooves - a faun type of creature I’m a man - the creature insists he's a man again he and does so repeatedly in the chorus almost like he's trying to convince himself or trying to prevent himself from forgetting it. don’t spin me a lie - He was lied to. Maybe this is why he's a "twisted fool" ? Got toes and I can smile - Trying to prove he can do "human" things. I’m crooked but upright - "crooked" is referring to his crooked physical appearance of half man/half beast. "but upright" shows that he's a actually an innocent person. And all I ever want is just a little love - "love" in this sense means to be recognized as a human being I said in purrs under the palms - he's now talking to the other members of this "zoo" now but in hushed purrs, trying to remain hidden under the palms - so he too is on guard for there are other bigger threats out there. And all I ever want is breaking me apart - the conflict in his mind is slowly driving him insane. I said to the thing that I once was - you, the "boy" is the thing that he once was. The human that he once was. To the left now boy - around the bend, in a hidden place Underneath the moon - this line signals that its at night but also a transition from the current time to a distant time in memory. By the thick tan sand And the tall thin grass - illustrates a type or eerie calmness. One more thing for you - we finally arrive at the revelation of why you are here. See the distant flume - you can actually see "it" approaching in the distance. In the sleepy dunes - sleepy dune because you may enter or leave this place while in a state of drunken stupor. possibly from being drugged and dragged there. Makes my nerves clench close And my bones go cold - this place strikes so much fear in him that the very sight chills him to the bone and makes his mind freeze in terror. When I see that room - that "room" is the place where he was first taken to, experimented on and was turned into a beast. This whole time he had been telling you that the inhabitants of this zoo are actually people who had been twisted and turned into animals. He had been losing his mind/humanity as he is struggling to remember who he was as a man. All this time, through a lulling melody, he's been guiding you to the very room where this all began to show you that the danger here is that you are next.

i mosty agree but there are some buts i think are still left up for interpretation. for one , it think two black hooves is referring to a goat , showing that he's "cloven hooved" . and 'dont spin me a lie' is also him insisting he's a human and you cant tell him otherwise. that last bit im unsure of with sleepy dunes , and the room being a place where the speaker was experimented on , but i love the story you wove from this song and i cant unhear it now.
