Enjoyed the video. I've been blowing glass since '76, and I do make tumblers, some of which probably could hold about a pint, using a design based on the old Lily Pad pattern, but modernized, and more flowing (like waves). I also work alone. I use a sand pontil, which has some advantages. Sets up pretty quickly, for one. It does leave a smooth, although slightly cloudy (sand dust) pontil mark. When your piece came off the punty, I wondered if you might try re-puntying it. I have done it, but there again, the sand punty helps with that, being quicker. Also helps if you have a place to put the piece where it will stay in place while puntying. Those look fun, and I might try a few just for the heck of it. Need a blowpipe hose extension (I've never used one). I have a couple of Steinert optic molds.

I have (very often) repuntied work... especially when a beginner's piece falls off. These cups are extremely thin and (probably) wouldn't survive the time it takes to make a new punty. I also wasn't too happy with either of the first couple tries, so didn't care too much if they became cullet. LOL. If these were precious I would have tried harder to save them, but they are so quick to make that I decided to start over. Cool to hear about sand punties. I've only used them for puntying the inside of 2-part goblets so they release easier. Cool idea though.

Thank you for your Videos! Im not a glass blower, but its very interesting to me what your doing. And the way you do your Videos has something relaxing. Hope to see more of you in the future.

Thanks so much! I agree. There is something super relaxing about the sounds of the glass studio hot shop-the hum of the furnace, the clink of the tools, the glowing glass. I'm right there with you.

Really like that foot pedal air - appreciate the clear, procedural demos and being transparent about real world frustration we all run into. All's well that ends in a beautiful glass of ale. Thank you!

Thank you! Appreciate the kind words. That foot pedal was a program-saver during COVID when we couldn't take masks off in the shop. It's sooo simple to make, too. Just a low-pressure regulator, an $18 foot pedal, a length of latex hose and a silicone neon boot to slide onto the blowpipe. We're definitely keeping it!

you should use the same punty over to save time on the stick up hotter

Nice. I’m looking forward to hearing your narrative. I appreciated seeing the punty fails as well. Guess it happens to everyone once in awhile unless your last name is Gudenrath. I’d like to better understand the process of centering the cup on the punty. I just can’t get my head around it. Your help would be appreciated.

Appreciate it! Narrative dropping this weekend. I'm still editing so will make sure to focus a bit on centering the punti... might also be a future video. Thanks!

@@davinebanks ok so another issue. When I try the twisty cup, the part next to the pipe freezes almost immediately and the end that I grab with the shears is way too soft. I end up pulling it out to the correct size but it’s super thin. Obviously it’s a heat issue but I don’t seem to get a different result. I tried getting the pipe really hot but still doesn’t help

@@mdbryan9525 I hear you. First, everything with an optic twist needs to be quick. Until you finish twisting it you can't let it get cold. So, I'm in the optic mold for about 1.5 seconds, then back in the heat. The whole thing goes all the way in the hole. Moile and all. My pipe is usually glowing above the glass here. Get it moving and quickly do the twist. If you're already doing all that then the second thing is to make sure you're twisting a straight cylinder, NOT a cone. If your glass is tapered at all the end will twist way more than the neck area. That's why I do an aggressive swing down on my way to the bench to twist-to straighten the cone. In fact, I should be doing this more. Hope this helps!

@@davinebanks ok. Gave it another try. I think I got 4 in the box out of a nonstop session of 5 hours. Most of the failures (95%) were from the edges of the bottom of the tumbler blowing out too thin. The other 5% were punty failures. Punty s we’re almost always too cold.
