This session we repair an old 1940's Arvin 617 shortwave radio. In its time it was a popular radio, with a beautiful large dial. With an RF amplifier section it was a great performer. We bring this from a garage find up to fully restored and working condition.

Using that 3.9 Meg resistor at 31:50 is perfectly fine since the resistance is very very high. I learn something new from Ron every time ! . Ron's ability to fix something as old as this radio, a Rhythm Maid from 1937, and align it really proves what a talented guy he is. Not ashamed of showing a mistake at the very end and fixing it. We are all guilty of it. Awww, cute kitty.🐱

Your living my dream from my child hood. I always had an interest in radio's and built my first radio (crystal) when I was in the second grade. I think I got the plans out of a Popular Mechanics magazine but that's been 75 years ago, anyway it worked. Our school was just a couple miles from Michigan State Collage and they had their own radio station, and still do. We never had the money to by kits or even parts to I just played around with them till I went in the army. They made me a microwave radio repairman and I worked at that for 3 years. I tried to get a job in that field but the pay was so low I decided to work for GM. Never did get back to the trade at all. Watching you restore these radios brings back memories of my army training and the theory. It's all forgotten now but your still fun to watch. Tell me about your background. Your better than any instructor I ever had. Regards

Just a rumor. I heard he was an engineer for defense firm. Maybe he'll say. Another guy I used to follow a good bit is a piping draftsman. He fixes TV's, Seeburgs, Lawn Boys, old Chevy sedans and whatnot like it's second nature. Very talented people! I envy and am inspired by their work.

You are the best radio repair person by far. You go into detail and you are easy to follow. I liked the part when you replaced the capacitor in the can and disconnected it and re-attached the new capacitor back to the can with a 3.9 megohm resistor. I am in the process of replacing can capacitor in Zenith 5S-127 and will follow your method. Some people hollow out the can on top of the chassis and stuff a new capacitor in the can and then drill holes in the bottom and bring the leads underneath. I tried to unscrew a can and ended up mutilating it. Some people cut the can off near the bottom with a dremel or hacksaw blade then take the contents out and put a new capacitor in. Then they re-attach the top half of the can by wrapping aluminum tape around the two sections. Too much work. It doesn't have to be museum quality. I also tried restuffing a wax capacitor by heating it with a heat gun. I got the old capacitor out but went a little too far and burned the capacitor such that the markings were un-readable - too much trouble and waste of time.

Looks like a model 617 "Rhythm Maid" from 1937. These are definitely not just $100 sets, they're actually highly desirable and quite expensive when restored. The "Rhythm" series are the most collectable early Arvin, with the "Rhythm Queen" and "Rhythm King" consoles being the rarest. Pre-war Arvins of any kind are fairly rare, they were a small off brand with low production until the late 40's.
@adrinathegreat3095
@adrinathegreat3095 2 жыл бұрын
I thought so to, I did a quick Google search and saw one had sold for just over 1000 dollars back last year from the radio attic, certainly looked exactly like this one and cosmetically very similar. I couldn't find anymore for sale, but does seem to be quite rare and certainly a desirable model.
@a587g
@a587g 2 жыл бұрын
@@adrinathegreat3095 I think $1000 might be a bit optimistic, though as they say, something is worth what someone will pay. The market for tombstone/cathedral radios has changed a lot; in the 70's and 80's, cathedrals with small dials brought high dollars - an unrestored Philco 70 was a $400 radio! Now, they go for far less than that and the market has moved to tombstones with large round dials: Zenith, Sparton, Airline, Silvertone, Arvin, et. al tombstones are all very collectable, and Zenith's 1938 "Waltons" models just seem to trade for ever more insane prices each year. Interestingly enough, even high-end RCA and GE tombstones with their smaller dials don't generate much interest, despite being better engineered sets than most of their competitors.

I have 4 models, one from each decade from 50’s-80’s. 3 of the 4 I got for parts or repair and got them all working perfectly. I have a Simpson 260 that I hardly ever use over the Triplett meters. Only thing I like on the Simpson is the polarity switch over the Triplett.

Another great vid. Arvin radios made some very collectible sets, especially with their "Phantom" line, which yours is in. Restored, I would place it's value in the $300+ area. Although names like Zenith bring higher prices, a lot of the orphan brands created some of the most sought after sets.

Nice job, can't believe that radio is only worth 100 dollars now. Would have guessed at least 300 to 500. It's a hell of a lot of radio for 100 dollars. I suppose there aint as many collectors for the more obscure brands as you said. Would of thought that rarity made them more sought after myself!
