Glaze review . Mayco SW-214 Micro Pearl

Hello Potters. In this episode of glaze review we are reviewing a micro crysta; glaze from the Mayco company, Mirco Pearl. Usually you get companies trying to make large crystals with lots of runny problems but Mayco has developed a micro crystal glaze with a good amount of stability. None of these tests were put on cookies, stilts, stands. nothing like that. Just leaving enough space for my glaze too move a little was enough for the glaze to not run while producing very nice micro crystals. Bets of all, most of the tests , except the iron saturated clays, came out very repeatable and standard. Consistency is key.

I have tested a lot of my cone 6 homemade glazes in a cone 14 wood fire. They work quite nicely sometimes. I keep them on the rim until I know how they are going to be. Also, a lot of underglaze works nicely in that kiln too. Oh and I've seen some stroke and coats from that kiln too. The red stayed red. It was more washy but definitely gorgeous. Cone 14 because that is what we get in the front of the kiln to get the back to cone 10.

Hey Dante, I've used Amaco Jungle Gems which to me look the same, glaze with little crystals that burst in the kiln. But the Amaco JGs are cone 04-06 or so to keep the crystal bursts looking good. At cone 6, they "run" and just look like melted crystal bits. Kind of interesting as I was surprised that the Mayco micro glazes are cone 6! Huh! Thanks!

These videos are so helpful. This glaze isn't for me. I love the crystal effect but the color isn't my taste. Im so curious about the other glazes they sent you. Did you fire to cone 6?

Hi there! You influenced me to purchase this glaze because your results were beautiful! Sadly, I did not get the same beautiful result. On a white clay body thrown bowl with texture, four coats brushed on, I got no crystals and a light blue matte finish. It was a flat boring colour, no pinholing, no drips. I shook and stirred the jar and dried coats before applying the next one. Fired to cone 6 according to the kiln technician. Testing on tiles has not resulted in interesting results. It is a stable glaze, but so far, pretty boring.

Agree. Looking into it. I think the kiln temp may have been higher than reported by the technician. Cuz I did everything correctly. Any suggestions would be so much appreciated!

:) Remember I did put it on relatively thick though so it's in between three and four layers. I tried to do three but sometimes it figured on three and a half. Then again I did have one that just got poured on so... That's probably like four or five layers 😊

A lot of people forget, a lot of people don't feel obliged to, it happens to almost all KZbinrs. One of the largest KZbinrs in the world has over a billion followers and doesn't get anywhere near a billion views or thumbs up every time he posts. Is pretty par for the course sadly 🤷‍♂️

I'm doing cone 6 on a white body. It's a mayco stonewear they sell. I got no crystals and it pin holes large and small like crazy... Help how do I fix this problem. Pinhole is always a huge problem.

I used micro pearl and it came out mat with speckles (similar to what you would expect from winterwood). Is this because they’re not being fired hot enough? I’m thinking that the studio I go to may have an issue with their kiln and are only firing to cone 5 even though they say they fire to cone 6.
