The video might be old as for the years, but for viewer/s who's into audio/sound engineering this video still fresh to be, very informative and entertaining. Honestly, even until now I am tempted to review the vid as refresher. And downloaded it for vid file reference.. Sir Bruno Goh Luse is a true man who's willingness to share his knowledge is truly commendable. But I just don't understand why there are people who disliked the vid. Best regards, Steven Murray

Excellent video. While not cheap, I think the Allen and Heath Qu Series represents a good quality entry level series of digital mixers. I'm using a QU-16 in a mobile church, and the things I like about it : 1. Excellent audio quality. 2. It feels like a premium product - the surfaces, knobs, faders, all feel good quality. You mix with confidence, knowing that you are using a quality product. 3. The documentation is relatively excellent. I would have written it in a completely different way though. 4. It replaces a huge rack of devices which one would have had to purchase, if one was aiming to do all this using analog devices. 5. Good set of processors, Gates, High Pass Filters, Parametric EQ's, Graphic EQ's, Compressor, Delay, and its nice to know that the compressor has an infinity ratio - but it would have been wonderful to be able to set the threshold at which the soft knee kicks in. What's missing? No Dynamic EQ, No Multiband Compressor, It would have been super to have a dedicated limiter, the Minimum release time of 100 milliseconds on the Compressors is far too long, would have wished for a release as low as 10 milliseconds Its a bit difficult to know the exact value of a fader, it would be nice to know this afterall, this is a digital mixer so some exactness would have been appreciated. I find that the calibration on the dials, makes it difficult to consistently set values accurately, for processor parameter values, example adjusting values on compressor ratios, is a bit of a hit and miss. The accuracy of dials seems to vary from channel to channel, and this does not make any sense.

Dear GLB, Thanks for your awesome work. I watched your videos on Allen & Heath Qu-32 and will like to ask you a question. I sent all 32 channels over USB to my DAW and sent back the processed mix over the same USB to channels 31 and 32. These channels were routed to my video switcher on mix 7-8. The problem is that my mix 7-8 is also sending the unprocessed sound from all inputs instead of just sending 31 and 32 coming from the DAW. So I have a combination of processed and unprocessed sound coming from 7-8. How can I exclude channels 1 to 30 from mix 7-8? Thanks.

All three of these videos (Part 1,2,3) by GLB are EXCELLENT. My band is expecting the arrival of the QU-16 in two days and I've been searching everywhere for a good nuts and bolts explanation of the QU series mixers. These 3 videos by GLB are by far the most effective on the planet, and that's for both novice and advanced users. Thank you, GLB!! You even made it fun! I do have a question: Are there sample tracks that one can use to experiment with the board? I know we can record the band but prior to us actually using it, let alone recording from it, it would be awesome to experiment with sample tracks to help get familiar. Please advise if any of these exist. Thanks again.

Hello Matthew glad to videos have been helpful! When you say sample tracks do you mean for doing a virtual soundcheck? Or for practising your mixing skills?
@mattysguitarjourney9057
@mattysguitarjourney9057 7 жыл бұрын
Primarily for practicing mixing skills. For me, I'm only interested in live performance mixing, so it sure would be nice if there were some online songs available for the QU series to practice with. This will help with mixing skills, yes, but also would help aid in familiarity with moving around the board, etc.

Hello, great presentation! We have QU-16 mixer and we are trying to connect main LR as mono output to the Atlas amplifier and signal goes out to the Bose MA12 speakers. What we want to do is use 3 amplifiers all together with QU-16 mixer and have all three amps receive mono from this mixer. How can this be done! Any AH documentation on how this is done? Thanks!
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 2 жыл бұрын
It's possible to create a mono output from the main LR by simply ensuring that all pan controls are in the center position. On the other hand, if you need a true summed mono from the mixer that can be created by using the post-fader mix outputs.

@@GLBProductions BTW, I have tried your proposal, however connecting LR like you mentioned works great having same sound come out on all speakers we have. Basically we have QU-16 mixer Main LR output going directly into Atlas HPA2604 4 channel amplifier and from this amp running 4 Bose MA12 speakers. Inputs to the mixer are 4 mics, in first 4 channels, AKG C7 mics, with 48V phantom power ON. There's also 1 mic Shure SM7B connected to chan 1. We have trouble setting up proper gains on this mics due to feedback if gain is at 3o'clock. Of course we have to play with this but is there any docs on how to correctly manage feedback with this system? Something like use of frequency cuts info? Thanks!

@anonymous_friend 7 жыл бұрын
Great job teaching this board. Question! If you are applying FX to a vocal mic on the LR master mix. Do you mix the FX into the chain using the returns or the sends? Is proper gain structure setting the send hotter, and applying only what you want to the mix bus with the RETURN fader? I'm trying to understand send and return levels better. Thanks
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 7 жыл бұрын
Good question PJ - the simple answer is either technique can be used. My approach is to use the send levels to regulate the balance of the effect amongst the various channels and the return to regulate the overall level of the effect. So for example if I want more reverb on mic A I will increase the effects send on channel A relative to channel B. If I want more reverb overall I will increase the vocal reverb effects return fader. If you have not done so already, I suggest you watch this video to ensure that you are clear on how this signal chain would work using an analog mixer and an external effects unit, because a digital mixer simply mirrors this but within the mixer's CPU: kzbin.info/www/bejne/faCsmqKcpqp8r7c

This was a great series on the QU. I am purchasing one soon and before i do, I would like to know how much control do you have of the extra input sources when you connect the D-snake unit? Does that expand the mixer channels in addition to the 32 controllable channels. Or am i still limited to control of 32, but, i can source from any of the available physical mic/line connections? I ask because i want to purchase the QU32 + 16ch dsnake to replace my analogue console. I Use my mixer as a patchbay and have my cabinets, outboard rack gear, cutting room mics, etc. all permanently wired up to the console on dedicated channels. And with the effects returns coming back into board, sometimes i need to track more than 32 channels at once. So will the D-snake increase my channel count or no, in that regards?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Joseph, my understanding is that on the Qu32 you are limited to 32 mono plus three stereo inputs for a total of 38 inputs total. Getting the D-snake unit does not expand this it simply relocates the physical inputs from the back of the mixer to the rack unit. If you need more information I suggest you post a question over at the Allen and Heath forums :)

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, I checked with my supplier and he said that for the Qu series you need to use an external splitter, either active or passive. If you want the split to be digital you need to move up to the SQ series, which can use the optional S-Link card to create a digital direct out.

Bruno,I've just put my hands on the QU16 chrome version today! But let me ask you some questions...because I've found it a little confusing :D 1) There are FX1 and FX2 button and the FX button itself near the HOME button... The FX button opens the FX menu which you can choose the FX right? But what about the FX1 and FX2 buttons since there are 4 effects to choose from? 2) How can I send an effect to an Aux send like the Mix1? First of all I've raised channel 1 fader (VOICE) and the master fader in the LR layer ,but after that I've tried unsuccesfully pressing the mix 1 layer raising the master fader and the SEND 1 and RETURN1 faders...
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Haha you're not alone there brother, I find these mixers confusing if I don't use a specific model for even a short time! 1) The Qu16 has only two dedicated FX busses, unlike the 24- and 32-channel models. There are still 4 FX engines within the mixer but if you want to use FX3 and 4 you need to patch them to one of your other mix buses. This is done within the FX patching menu. 2) To send an FX return to one of the mixes first make sure that it is working in the LR mix. Then press mix 1 (for example), then press the top layer button (above the word custom) and raise the appropriate FX Ret fader - you should be able to see from the signal present buttons which FX engine is active. Double check that your FX Send fader is also raised and un-muted when in the LR mode. This has taken me several minutes of head-scratching during shows to work out...
@CrisValk
@CrisValk 4 жыл бұрын
@@GLBProductions 1) tell me if I get it correctly...there are 4 FX engines,so each of those can have a different effect based upon the choice in the FX menu...(example in the 1 I'll put a reverb,2 Delay, 3 Chorus and 4 another different reverb) BUT the one chosen in the FX1 can only go out of the FX1 Bus and the FX2 on the FX2 bus? While FX3 and FX4 they don't have their own dedicated output,so you have to choose in which output bus they'll go?In this case if I send them through a mix bus,I can't use that mix bus for monitors anymore? 2) So basically this is the procedure? - Press a mix bus button where is connected the monitor - Raise master fader and the FX RTN fader of the effect chosen (example FX1 = FX1 RTN) (unmute eventually) - Press LR buses button - Press Top Layer button - Raise FX1 Send fader (unmute eventually) Last thing...I know it sounds strange since that is common the opposite,but...what if I want the reverb ONLY in the monitor?is it possible? PS do you know if there is the software version where you can make practice? Last time I used one for Soundcraft UI and DiGiCo,but didn't find anything for this one...
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that sounds correct. Basically you have to remember to a) Choose an effect and assign it to one of the FX busses. b) Route signal to the FX bus & processor. c) Route the FX return signal to your desired mix bus. If you want FX only in the monitors just remove the FX rtn signal from the LR bus in the same way as you would remove any other signal - select LR bus, select the top layer, mute or bring down the FX rtn fader. With the QU series it is crucial to keep track of which mix bus is selected in the master section - I constantly remind my students to always press the LR select button after making any changes to ensure that the control service is defaulted back to the main mix. I believe that the iOS app for this mixer has a demo mode which allows you to practice.

By the way,it sounded like you never knew what ADT effect is....in this case for the first time I will teach something to you :D ADT stands for automatic double tracking...the Double Tracking is a common technique in the studio,and consist to overdub an identical take on top of another to get a larger sound!For identical I mean the same vocal line but re-recorded and put together,because a duplicate track won't sound the same. Once you hear how it sounds,it will be easy to discover it in the records.John Lennon loved his voice doubled for example. now it becomes clear that ADT is an effec to recreate that sound even in live performances,but to be honest is only an emulation,nothing beats a well made double tracking in the studio ;)

You're welcome Cris, hope that works out for you 😊 The SQ series have full android support - for some reason it was never implemented for the Qu models... Thanks for the explanation of ADT! I remember reading about it in one of my books but didn't recognise the acronym 😂 A long time ago when I was doing a recording project I remember re-creating it manually by duplicating the vocal track and then adding a 20ms delay to the copy. Panned left and right it made the vocal sound bigger without adding any reverb, which was pretty awesome!

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 5 жыл бұрын
No worries: first select the mix that you want to send the reverb to, then go to the layer of the mixer where the FX returns are located (I believe it is layer B). Then raise the appropriate FX return fader to send the FX to the monitor. The key is to then remember to switch back to the main mix!

I just finished watching these training videos, parts 1-3. I want to say they were pretty darn good. My only disappointment was in how to apply an effect. I have the QU-16 Chrome (which works the same way) but I'm having a hard time getting them to work. Oh well, my quest continues.

Yes that can be tricky because you have to ensure that both the FX send and return are unmuted and turned up. If you are having trouble I suggest you go to the shop that sold you the mixer and get them to show you in person - it is much easier to learn these things if you can see and touch the mixer for yourself.

Hello Daryl there are no hard and fast rules on how to use the various effects - in general for live sound you will use a reverb and/or a delay on the vocals, and some sort of reverb on the drums. Beyond that you need to know what you are trying to achieve and work accordingly.

thanks for the video. how to do virtual soundcheck with these mixer. using usb or daw?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 8 жыл бұрын
The basic idea is that you multitrack record the actual band and then play it back through the mixer so that the inputs appear on the same channels as they would were the band actually there. It's a useful idea but works best for very large venues or acts that use in ear monitoring to reduce the effect of the stage volume on the front of house sound.

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 8 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear that and thanks for watching! Routing effects to the monitors is the same as any other signal - you would press bus 1 (or whichever bus you're trying to route the signal to) and then find the master return fader for the FX engine that you are trying to route there, which will usually be on the second fader layer. Then simply bring that up until there is enough effect in the monitor.

It acts more like a master. Individual fader levels would still be set for proper balance, then DCA would affect the entire group. A good example would be to bring the entire drum kit to the front for a solo, then lower for rhythm.
