@jward199 Hope and Alan really did love each other. It's tragic that they couldn't make it work. I think all the rest of Alan's actions are colored by the way he couldn't turn his back on his family's twisted legacy to protect them and so destroyed her. I think that's why he takes an interest in Manny he sees them as living on the second chance he and Hope never got.
