I met Tony Hawk early in the morning near Lowell Elementary and Rogers Middle School in Long Beach when they were filming Gleaming The Cube back in '88. He was driving the Pizza Hut pickup truck and the other skaters were in the back. Saw Gleaming The Cube in the theater right around my birthday in January of '89. My friends and I were skating on the corner of Vista Street and Nieto Avenue right before school started. The Pizza Hut truck with Tony driving and the rest of the skaters pulled up right there. They got out and did a few skate tricks, it was hella cool. Ended up getting Tony's autograph! Good times.

I just met Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen last night at an event and got them to sign my DVD copy of Gleaming the Cube. I'll never forget watching it in theaters back in '89. Thanks for doing this.

WHS Class of 1987 here! From what I remember, all the scenes were shot after school was done for the day! It was a trip to see so many people I knew in the background. I could swear it was shot when I was still there, but I could be wrong. Those yellow things covering the Quad(that's what the lunch area was called) were installed over the summer in 1985. School opened in 1981. My sis was Class of 84. The first class to go all 4 years.

Absolute awesomeness! I recorded this movie off of HBO about a year after it came out & watched it over & over until the picture wore out, clutching my skateboard & dreaming of visiting these places the whole way. I always wondered about the train scene from the window & never knew that was actually Disneyland (never been, so my mind didn't piece it all together), & I LOVED the visuals of the campus scene. You're doing the Lord's work with this, haha...12-year-old me thanks you endlessly! 🤘😊🛹

I lived in Newport Beach, CA over the summer when this movie was filmed. I like you loved to skateboard, not common for girls my age but I made friends while there. Some of which ended up being extras in the Fun Zone filmed scenes. I also ran into Christian Slater and Alyssa Milano on the Newport Pier while they were touring on a day off of filming. It was a highlight of my early teen years. Thanks for covering the movie, it brought back so many memories :) I wish it was 1988-1989 all over again.

That was pretty awesome! Really liked Gleaming the Cube like I love Thrashin just for the nostalgic feeling of the 80's! I often style my hair like Brian's in the movie through a hairstyling technique I call "muscling" that I came up with many years ago, and recently put the blonde streaks back in. They often shoot a lot of movies where I live and you're making me think I should do something similar.

Yes, this was awesome! I to skated in the late 80s and thought this movie was shot mostly in orange county. My connection to this movie was the finale. Before the new pike was built a lot of the property was used for LB Grand Prix storage. Gator was the stunt double for Slater. The tractor trailer that Slater rolls under was parked on that property and Gator was practicing launching off a launch ramp next to the truck. He was wearing a blonde wig with no shirt on. My friends and I skated downtown LB all the time and that morning we happened to be there while he was warming up. Later on that afternoon they filmed the finale.

In fact, I can post videos of me and my crew skating there in the 90s. yes its a KFC now but for a while it was a drive thru now. But even after the movie it had a little ram on the South side where cars would go up to a sort of drive thru. My cousin worked there for a while too.
