I had the privilege of operating a Gleaner A II when I was younger. We operated with three Gleaner C IIs. During harvest we had a old custom cutter by the name of Chalmers Nelson that we hired to cut some down wheat. He brought in the last two of his Gleaner A IIs to finish the job. During the cutting Mr Nelson got sick and I took over running one of the A IIs to help them finish. It was about the same as running the C II combine just a lot smaller. Open cab area made for some dusty times if wind was up but other than that the old machines ran perfectly. We moved on from the C IIs to a Gleaner N 6 after that harvest. That was the last harvest that I saw those Gleaner A IIs run. Mr Nelsons health stopped him from operating a combine. He told me stories about his harvest crew in the panhandle of Texas and Oklahoma running 8 Gleaner A combines. Those old days were tough and the men and women who farmed back then were even tougher!

This takes me back in time. Thank you for sharing. My dad's only self-propelled combine was an A-2. Previously, he and my grandfather used pull-type AC combines; a 60 and a 66. That A-2 was my dad's pride and joy. His did have a cab though.

When I was a child, we had a Massey 27 and an International 151. My dad traded both in for a Gleaner “G”. It was my job to fill the gas tank every day. At that time, we just had a hand pump. That was a lot of work to pump gas uphill for an 8 year boy!

Drove a Gleaner one summer for a neighbor harvesting maize (sorghum) in south Texas in the 1960's. It was a hot, dusty, itchy ordeal - no cab, no umbrella, nada. Just a straw hat. Twenty years later my skin would crawl when I passed a combine in the field. Glad I did it, but wouldn't do it again.

ours had an aftermarket add on cab. We weren sure if it kept the dust out or trapped it in.

Grew up in Western Kansas with 4 C2's, they always seemed to put the JD 7700 we had to shame.
