Blender Quick tip №4. Viewport acceleration

In this quick tip, we're going to use Display Tools to boost viewport performance. We'll be turning double-sided lighting off, to improve frame rate by a decent number - automatically for many objects. For example, on my 650m scene navigation gets much more fluent, from 5 fps to 20-30 fps.

this addon has been included inside latest Blender package. Just go to Addons and write Display Tools. It should popup ;)

totally different options in that Display tools add-on though. Where are the shading options (double-sided etc.) ?

I heard you can improve render time + taking advantages of low memory by ALT+D instead of SHIFT+D if youre looking to duplicate identical object over and over.

I' m impressed, nice work. You should have put your illustration. I have some questions, you work on linux, mac os or windows? I noticed that blender does not slow down when you multiply your pumpkins, what is the composition of your PC (just the basics; processor, ram etc ...)? And version of blender, gimp? thanks :)

Thanks, Hanna! I work on win 7, core i7 3610, nvidia 650m, 16gb ram please note that video is sped up a bit. when I clone pupmkins, there is a slight delay in Blender. less than a second, though. everything is quite manageable with double-sided shading turned off :).

Mugshot Tricky Cool! The new versions of Blender seem to turn off double-side lighting by default. But still, Display Tools are relevant in many other ways.

Adolfo Domingues how many ghz do you have? btw if your computer is that powerful you should have no problem whatsoever, one of my laptops, the macbook air 2011 model runs smoothly on 2m vertices

Good day Mr. Alexandro Отличные работы, ОЧЕНЬ! Вижу Вы используете аддончики разнообразные, не могли бы сделать лучше по ним какой то обзор. Где их достать и как ими пользоваться. В частности еще интересует как можно в Blender менять цвет сетки у элементов во вьюпорте (Color Wire). Думаю что это будет полезно для многих.

Gleb Alexandrov Thanks for your answer. on my machine, phenom x6 and two GTX (a 460 for viewport and a gtx580 3gb for cycles) the viewport, even using Display add-on, lag too much with 2 million polygons. For my need blender is practical unusable.

minchiozzo, try to make a small test: turn on Solid mode, duplicate some cubes to make it 2 mln polygons, select all and turn OFF double-sided lighting. will it lag on this setup?

Gleb Alexandrov Hi Gleb, thanks a lot for your interest in my problems. I did the test and it lag the some, a bit less when turn off duble-sided lighting, but in any case not workable. For obtain your fluidity I must activate the Fast Navigate Addon. Also Ho do you count the fps viewport speed?

just pressed alt+a to activate playback (and see fps counter :) it's not exact numbers, just an approximation

ПОпробовал ваш трюк, но прироста не обнаружил никакого. До сих пор считаю въюпорт в блендере его основной проблемой. Именно производительную часть. В Софтимаже могу десятки высокополигональных деревьев вертеть, а в блендере 2 деревца еле ворочает.
