So this episode aired after the superbowl on that year, ergo the football theme and also the reason why it was a bit longer, so less continuity of the story and more ridiculousness as you mentioned, for me this episode is the mash up of thriller and heads will roll and thats it

Fun fact: this was the most watched episode of Glee when it was on air because it followed up directly after the Superbowl! It's also probably my least rewatched S2 episode. I like the music bits and some of the character work, but the football focused storyline is just not my thing. Especially because Glee's version of football has never been exactly accurate.
