You mention not counting the Season 5 version of Defying Gravity, but the Season 1 duet version included on the first "Glee the Music" compilation also varies from the episode version with Chris singing the opening lines in the episode and Lea having them on the CD version. It's a shame because lyrically they fit Kurt a whole lot better than they do Rachel, so it would have been nice to have that version available as the studio mix without the plot-required bum note. (And yes, I know there are solo releases available for both of them, but I am referring specifically to the duet.)

There r some other examples of this, in My Life Would Suck Without You, Finn's voice is much louder during the "I know that I've got issues but you're pretty messed up too" part, but in the studio version u can barely hear him. Also when the guys sing Hall Of Fame as a group number at Regionals, Artie's voice is clear in the chorus but the studio version makes him quieter. The same thing happene with Artie's vocals when they sing Let it Be

It's mostly due to Dianna receiving Chris' Sam love interest storyline. Because Kurt was supposed to be involved with Sam originally, and they record studio vocals first, it's likely they recorded Kurt's bits and submitted it to be released with Kurt before they decided to change it to Sam and Quinn. So then, when it comes to filming, they've only just rewritten season two to include Kurt's Dalton storyline with Blaine, rather than him staying and dating Sam, they just get Dianna to record the solo lines to replace Chris during the filming, either live, or quickly in the studio. Which also means they can't send the new recorded version to be released as it's either too late to submit/replace it, or they don't want spoilers for the episode/storyline to be revealed with the studio version.

In Pompeii it's actually fine because in the studio version Artie and Mercedes do sing the part of "Great clouds roll over the hills" but in the second pre chorus and Brittany and Mercedes sing the entire second chorus, it's just that they cut almost all of the first part of the song.

Yess I've always noticed the mixing is sometimes different in the performance vs the studio version, and it's always fascinated me, for example Artie and Quinn's vocals are stripped in I'm Still Standing whereas the studio version has a bunch of backing vocals, same with Hold On, you can hear Chris/Demi/Adam soooo clearly in the performance but in the studio version they're drowned out

I'm pretty sure the reason for these changes is that STUDIO versions are made FIRST before knowing exactly how the songs will be used in the episode. For example, "We Need A Little Christmas" originally had Kurt singing, but in universe his character had transferred, so Quinn sang his part.

I’ve never had a problem with the fact they made the changes. The Studio recording was the finished product they wanted to put out, but the actual song version has changed based on what was needed for the story.

One that made me upset which was not on your list is in the episode version of Rachel and Pucks “need you now” duet in the second chorus Rachel gets to sing a little bit by herself, then puck does then they finish the second chorus together , but in the studio version they sing the whole second chorus together. It’s not that big a change but it’s always nice to get to hear puck sing by himself. Great video though 😀

Interesting. I did some digging and in the episode version they use the last chorus when it's just Santana singing. In the studio version they have Mercedes backing her up in the first and second chorus. I think this is quite common in the episode version's as the last chorus normally is the most dynamic so they use it for the episode 😊😊

i think most people misunderstood and think they recorded the series first before the songs? but it's actually the opposite, they recorded songs first and incorporate them into the episodes afterwards, the tidbits that are different is probably the demos that didnt make it into the studio version but put into the episodes for cutting the songs short due to runtime limit

“You get what you give” makes sense in episode to not be Sam, Just because that song is the graduating Seniors, and Sam wasn’t one. I knew about all but 1 of these, but honestly I’m not fussed about the changes. I understand in the recording studio they sing more than they need to for options and I guess when they can’t decide one goes on the album one goes one the episode 😂 But for some, I know the studio album comes first and in some cases it’s re-recorded for episode/storyline purposes. And honestly I’m happy with both :)

What I dont get... Is that in order for it to sound that good in the show itself.. They would have to record it that specific way. So why even change it for a studio recording? What would honestly NEED to be changed? Mainly the ones that need to be actually changed, or something is weirdly omitted from screen to sounds. Like the Blaine thing. I think that was unnecessary to change it. though it makes sense to add background singers to a studio version of songs. But changing like.. a verse of chorus for no reason makes no sense (like Puck and Sam). Even if I believed an ounce that they actually sang while filming the scenes- which I don't- no one would sound THAT good as they would try to edit it in post. Like.. I could imagine this argument makes sense in case of time for some actors, but super unrealistic entirely.

Studio version is the real version and then for story telling reasons they isolate certain vocals on the show or maybe change their mind late in the process on who the focus is going to be on. I think for all the group numbers they had everyone (or almost everyone do a version and then spliced them together. It seems weird but I would guess it is just a timing issue where they have to have the studio version by a certain time ready to upload when the episode airs and they can't go back and change it to the show version in time.

Have you ever thought of doing a compilation of Characters lip syncing other peoples lines? For example in PBTD where Blaine mouths "Hold tight" "Hold tight!" in the episode when its really mike.

@mehdigeek If you mean the Christmas songs from S2, it's the other way around. The studio version always comes first, so they gave Kurt's lines from the album to Quinn. By the time they filmed the episode, Kurt had left for Dalton so wasn't at McKinley to sing his parts, hence they needed to give them to someone else.
