You can tell how much she improved as a singer because she was able to add some rasp to her singing during this song, which constrasts with her super clean Broadway-style singing from earlier seasons.

See, I actually liked her sound better in seasons 1-3. It sounded much healthier and prettier. Now, the raw chest voice belts are starting to catch up with her. She should be using mixed voice, and not creating tension.

I completely agree and you can definitely tell that she's adding rasp with great technique and in a not harmful way. I think learning raspiness in singing is so important, because it allows you to successfully cover a much wider plethora of songs.

@@Schoolgirl325 I would disagree with that. She may have added other colors and nuances to her voice, but it doesn't mean she's hurting herself. Slack folds are perfectly healthy (another term is vocal fry) but she's just being a bit thicker with her belt which isn't bad. It's quite good. Belt's are always loud and she doesn't sound like she's constricted

She's always pitch perfect, but this time she actually made choices in her rendition that really coloured her voice and highlighted the song's qualities. It's very impressive, because normally this is something that should have been sung by say Naya Rivera, but she was spectacular.
