I knew Glen when he lived in Phoenix. One day he was getting his car washed at at a place called Danny's car wash. They were having technical problems and things started shutting down, cars weren't moving and people were getting impatient, it started to rain and things just went down hill from there. Glen then pulled a guitar from his car and started playing for the crowd. He played for 20 minutes until the rain had stopped and things started working again. People soon forgot about their cars and just listened in awe. The funny things was when their cars were ready, they didn't care- there had to be close to 80 people shoeing the workers away - they just wanted to listen to Glen. Finally his car was done, he put his guitar back in the car and tore out of there like a like a madman. He was a terrible driver - but a great guy.

I don't know if he felt that way as he got older, but he surely felt it when he was young. He once remarked that he just didn't feel that when he played something that was in fact, difficult, that the general public really cared. Reminds me of the true story of a live concert where Frank Zappa went on break and let "his buddy" play a little while he was gone. The guy played guitar, very, very well and got a little polite applause as Zappa returned; Zappa then said "oh yeah, that was Eric Clapton" and suddenly the place went nuts. They had to be told when to clap. Maybe it has always been that way, that only a handful of people ever appreciate those real talents--of course Glenn had BOTH, the virtuosity and the popular appeal.

Glen was a great man all around. Talented yes, he was the consummate artist, and it is the opinion of many that he was one of the best guitarists that ever graced the stage. Eddie Van Halen pleaded with Alice Cooper to, "Please get me a guitar lesson with Glen." He was so much more then just a wonderful stage presence, he was a loving gentle person that radiated that love to those around him. I sure hope heaven is real, because people like him deserve to be around forever...

I dont think he took women as seriously as he could have. This bothered me when i was 9. I think he sort of had johnny carsons problem. I remember a delight arkansas girl saying.all gken cared about was that darn guitar. Not us girls he was too married to his career. Johnny carson admitted the same problem. I also feltlike tanya tucker got him into trouble. Like so many girls ive known.

@@sketchyold I hear that too Bill, he was also what they call "a mean Drunk" when he was drunk. I remember one time being interviewed he talked about a condition when a son of his came to him for money, his beef was them not having a plan of what they needed the money for--and as a side, I get that. But he said something like "that's when the belt comes off--and I don't care how old they are". Sort of an insight into his temper. I guess like most celebs--and people generally there really is a tendency to avoid the faults, especially in that grace period they receive after they pass.

@villesivonen86934 жыл бұрын
@Dale Baker As far as I know, early signs of dementia can be noticed (albeit in hindsight) several years before an actual diagnosis. Glen must have already had Alzheimer's in the early 2000s, as his daughter Ashley has told she could see something wasn't right with him even when she was in high school (which makes it around 2002-04). An early glimpse of things to come, even back in 1995, isn't completely impossible.

He has perfect pitch and he had an uncle who was a studio guitarist who taught him everything he knew. Then as I remember he went to some sort of guitar school in Arizona or somewhere. so to say he never had a lesson is pretty disingenuous.
@paulmoody7188 жыл бұрын
His Uncle Boo was a great guitarist, but never played in the studio. But he did teach Glen an awful lot. As for guitar school in Arizona, he played from for 6-7 years with his uncle, Dick Bills and the Western Ranglers, in Albuquerque New Mexico before coming to LA. He never went to school of any kind after the 7th grade, music or otherwise.

of course Mr Campbell is head and shoulders above Elvis in every way. Elvis was a cultural phenomenon that had to happen. if you are a male and can sing at all you can sound like Elvis. very easy to do. that's why there are over 80 thousand Elvis impersonators in the U.S. alone, that list there primary occupation as Elvis impersonator.
@jstarks1237 жыл бұрын
Not sure why that comparison is even necessary. They were two completely different artists. There is no question that Glen Campbell was the better musician; he was a great song-writer and probably one of the best guitar players ever. He was also an exceptional vocalist. Elvis was a performer, plain and simple (one of the best ever). He also had an incredible voice, and I personally do not agree that any of the impersonators sound anywhere near as good as him. They may THINK they sound like him, but I've listened to virtually everything that Elvis ever did from 1954 up to the very end, and there is no one capable of imitating the uniqueness of his voice. The fact he has so many impersonators 40 years after his death says something about his popularity and the impact he had. But that doesn't mean the impersonators are actually good. What's very annoying is how most of the impersonators try to imitate the "Vegas Elvis," which to me represents the downside of his career. His best music, in my opinion, came from the '50's and early '60's.
@villesivonen86934 жыл бұрын
@Bob Recher Most Elvis impersonators don't sound a single bit like him. Elvis' voice was so unique that I think there are less than 20 people in the world who honestly have a voice even remotely similar to his. Another thing, most of those over 80 thousand impersonators are totally shit - the serious, respectful (and respectable) tribute artists can probably be counted in dozens.
@Tunz9092 жыл бұрын
@@jstarks123 Glen was a REAL musician, played as a session man on hundreds and hundreds of tunes in recording studios.....Great song-writer?...ahhh..care to list let's say more than one? "were you a hillbilly family?", what a question to ask.
@jakemitchell16713 жыл бұрын
Actually, "hillbillies" do not find one bit of offense in that label. In fact, most regard it with pride. Whether referring to the Appalachians or the Ozarks, mountain people associate themselves incredibly closely with their geography. Take a moment to check out the work of Mark Laita on KZbin called "Soft White Underbelly." Many of his videos feature marginalized people of the West Coast, but IMO the most compelling work focuses on the people of the Appalachian Mountains. And to a person - many dozens - they regard the term "hillbilly" with great pride.
