I bought a bottle of Double Cask last summer. It was a little rough at first but developed beautifully with time and oxidation. It was viscous and resinous and quite complex for a young dram as I remember it. A friend of mine gave me a bottle of Glen Scotia 25 year old, and interestingly, the 25 year old is less viscous than Double Cask.

You're right the DC is quite viscous. Strange more so than the 25. I've never had the 25, but I hear it's amazing. 🥃

Ah. Finally a Glenscotia. I wish you started with the 15 though. It is a whisky I really love followed by the Victoriana. One of my favorites is actually the Glen Scotia 14, tawny port finish bottled at 52.8! I think they released this particular bottle for the Campbeltown festival. Strongly recommend this bottle! The Double Cask is decent and another one of those calibration whiskies I would drink as a regular "casual sipper" (as you aptly described). Btw, a strange flavor note, I typically pick up in almost all the Glenscotia bottles is "wet cotton". It sounds strange and very specific. But somehow very apt for my palate. I hope you follow this up with a review of the Glen Scotia 15! Now that is a true gem of a whisky.

15 is on the way! I'll look out for that wet cotton note, sounds interesting. I've seen that tawny port, but never bought it. I'm not sure if it's still around as it was last year's special release, but I'll check for it. I also have a single cask from GS that's absolutely delicious.

Love the old tacky bottles, just by how bad they are. Big fan of Glen Scotia with the Victoriana being amazing. The 2020 Tawny port festival release was mind-blowing. Great review.

Heh I guess those bottles had a “so bad it's good” vibe. I keep hearing good things about that tawny port!

I recommend to test Edradour Ballechin 8. It's also double cask matured (ex-bourbon/sherry) and has a nice flavor. Especially, after your tasting and high mark for Caledonia 12)

I've been eying that one at the shop, actually. Sounds interesting!

Just bought this, I think it's fantastic. Equally oaky and sherry with that spiciness. Love it.

Again excellent review. Sadly, it's true. In August 2019 I was given this to represent Campbeltown because Royal Mile Liquors was out of Springbank 10. It had an entirely different flavor profile!!! It had tropical fruit and yellow fruit peaches, mango, ripe pineapple and banana on top then vanilla and cream in the middle and on the bottom a chocolate or Earl Grey tea note. It was magnificent!! The next 2 bottles were almost as good but had lost the dark notes at the bottom and the last bottle is entirely different with an almost resinous tawng to it that I find quite off putting. I'm working my way through the bottle hoping it will change but I don't think so. I had it at it's peak I think so.... And the color was another turn off because the bottle I got in 2019 was close to natural. Glen Scotia Victoriana is at a second Batch and I'm glad I have 2 of the original. The Double Cask I got in 2019 had that "reachability" factory you spoke of about the GS 15yr. At least I found a close bottle to remind me. In November 2018 GS released a Peated 10yr version and beyond the Peat you get some of the qualities of the 2019 Double Cask. If you find it jump on it. It's Glen Scotia, and Campbeltown at it's peak. Rich, creamy delicious.

Interesting! I've only had the one bottle, so I wasn't aware that there was such a shift in quality between bottlings. I've noticed that with a few GS whiskies, though. I'm working on a bottle of Victoriana (a recent one) and it's extremely different from the one I reviewed last year. They make good stuff, but there's a bit of "luck of the draw" involved, it seems. I'll keep an eye out for that peated one. Cheers! 🥃

This drop really is one of the best NAS whiskies available the bourbon and sherry casks hit the spot with a decent abv.

I'm glad you got to do a review on this one, I went to My liquor store with this bottle in my to try, they are out of stock on this one,50$, I got another glenmorangie 14 port cask, 57$, but thank to your review I think I will not get it, I will spend those 50$ on other scotch with other type of flavors, thank you again, great review as always 👍🥃😎

Lucky mistake imo! I'd take the Glenmo 14 over this!

Good review, I was tempted to try this till you told me color was added. Too many other whiskeys out there to try in this price range that don’t add color.

I was underwhelmed by the Balvenie 12 double wood, also.

Agree. Not my cup of tea, either.

Yes, it got so much hype. Was pretty average for me.
@jackthepickledhound Жыл бұрын
@@hazydavo I wouldn't call it hype. It's just good marketing. Big time name recognition and the right price point with a decent label. I tried it at a bar and thought it was sour. Next thing I know, I get it as a gift. It does get better over time but I'll never reach for it

The 15 is one of my favourite single malts, I found it hard to connect with the double cask?
@Gwhisky3 жыл бұрын
I've got both on the go at the moment. In a side-by-side the 15 is a HUGE step up!

I liken it to a Bowmore 12. But not as deep in character. Nice easy dram, but not as good as the Bowmore 12.
