Like Wanaka and Queenstown, Arrowtown has sadly become a magnet for the rich and famous and rich and not so famous, so prices are ridiculous. Same has now happened in Tauranga and Mt Maunganui. Investors galore. Landlords are mainly Aucklanders now, so charge Auckland rents. So many families there now are desperate.

That's not how houses are priced. People don't go. Oh, I'm going to just charge them auckland prices. House prices are set by supply and demand, the only reason property is so expensive there is because people are willing to pay those prices.

We stayed in Arrowtown last June when it was -4 celsius & the pipes to the laundry were frozen at our motel till md-afternoon. Deliberately stayed in Arrowtown rather than Queenstown which is too busy all year round.

you also have to pan the light material from the top, then stratify and repeat. if you try digging around in the pan you'll never find anything. when you shake the pan side to side it moves the light material to the top and the heavies sink to the bottom.

Haha! you got a gold pan, awesome, moonlight creek an golds borough are good places for gold panning, arrowtowns abit thread bare on gold, as its been done over so much but ya never know, good luck on future panning, its good fun, look for black sand an inner edge's of rivers an dig down as golds heavier than water an stones, so when swishing around whats in ya pan don't be to vigorous, shake the stones out bit by bit, love it, watch a quick video on it, cheers!

I used to go there for Summer holidays in the 1960s before it became a real tourist town. It was much more authentic then and the 2 pubs were great. You could actually pan for gold and get a little if you had the patience in the heat. Now it just isn't the same which is sad.

better off with a plastic gold pan. I regularly go gold prospecting on the west coast. With a plastic pan you just need to rough it up a bit to remove the shine from the plastic as it's oily. But with metal pan you need to let it rust I think or 'season' it. There was one more very important piece of gold panning equipment you needed and that was a snuffer bottle to suck the gold up out of the pan. Gold is dense so it is with the other heavy objects in the river. You want to look for an inside bend with big rocks and move the big rocks and dig under them. You won't find gold with the sandy silty material.

Love your videos. The Chinese community in Arrowtown were treated poorly, infact very poorly. Most of them came here hoping to send wealth back to their families (coming from China hoping to bring money back to their families) and unfortunately alot of them died poor and alone. Same as in Samoa in Ww2 but the difference with Samoa is that they were accepted and created families, businesses and lifestyles that created the diversity that is now Samoa.

Great video. Nice try at panning but you do need allot more of practice. One thing you need to do before panning for gold anywhere else in NZ is look up NZ law regarding gold prospecting as we have allot of restrictions about were you can legally pan for gold. The NZ government owns all mineral rights here.
