Glencore’s CCR refinery: an overview of how copper is made, including copper refining & processing

Glencore’s Canadian Copper Refinery (CCR) is a copper refining and copper processing plant in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. It’s been in operation since 1931 and was previously part of Xstrata Canada.
CCR refinery’s three main products are copper cathodes, anode copper and anode slime. The copper refinery plant takes copper anodes, with an average purity of 98%, and processes them to remove precious metals and other compounds. This produces copper cathodes: copper sheets with a purity of around 99.99%.
Our core copper processing activity is accomplished using electro-refining, which involves immersing the crude anode copper in electrolyte tanks containing sulphuric acid and dissolved copper, and passing an electric current through them.
The spent anode copper remaining after the copper refining process is melted down to create new anodes, allowing us to recover their full value.
The anode slime produced by this process is treated, along with anode slime from other copper refineries around the world, as CCR has recognised expertise in this treatment. Autoclaves reclaim copper, nickel and tellurium, then silver and gold are extracted and formed into very high quality ingots. Platinum and palladium are extracted in powered form and supplied to other refineries for processing.

Make another video! Detailed and beginning with receiving the ore and showing some important manufacturing processes. I know it's outside what you do but I sure wish someone would do that. I find it interesting and it makes me want to know more. Thank you for a very good snapshot of your refining process. Sorry if my terminology isn't correct. I'm learning!

I work at a warehouse that stores and ships copper cathodes we take them off ships and send them places in trucks and trains but I have always wanted to know how they are made so thanks

@@nombusozuma1480 I work for a company called Associated Terminals. It’s a Wherehouse facility we take the copper and other cargo off of ships, store it till need for transport then put it on trucks and rail cars. I hope this was helpful to you.

There is a plug at the bottom we pull it and then rinse the cells

question, what happens to the stainless steal in the cathodes? The copper plates out onto the stainless steal but nobody says what happens to the stainless steal, if it's still there then the copper can't be 99.9% pure

after the copper gets stripped, the stainless steel cathodes get reused for the next cycle. the copper and stainless steel don't "mix"

Copper starts at the mining process: The Mining Process at Copper Mountain Mine kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHLMdJx8eZKFoMk It ends with a black dirt concentrate containing 25% copper and other minerals like silver and gold before it is shipped to refineries. I couldn't find a video where it turns the concentrate into anodes.
