What an absolute steal for a 25 year scotch. Stunning. Thank you glenfarclas for not being greedy like macallan

One of my all time favorites! In 2 weeks I will run a "blind tasting whisky quiz". People will have to guess 1) abv 2) age 3) region (for SCO) or country 4) distillery 5) expression, getting more points going forward if they hit it. I think guessing age is definitely more difficult than abv (hence more points for age), but I believe it is not TOO difficult. Well, I´ll find out soon...
@WhiskeyQuests6 жыл бұрын
Macallan fine & rare that sounds like a great time. Do you charge an entry fee to the tasting or is it just with friends and good times?
@macallanfinerare25526 жыл бұрын
It´s actually both! I will have a test run with friends and then 6 days later the "commercial" edition (including some very nice food!). You can find the details (in German) at spirituosentheke.de. Soooo looking forward to both events!!!

Well done, this is on my list. In VA it is listed at $177 which is an insane value. Glendronach 18 sells for $190, Macallen 25 is $1600, and Talisker 25 is $659 for comparison purposes.

Nice one. And no there are no ex-bourbon barrels in the mix, only ex-sherry (Oloroso) casks. But mostly 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill. And yes, the Ken Burns Vietnam docu is amazing!
@ScotchTestDummies6 жыл бұрын
nice to know on the casks! 2nd and 3rd fill definitely decrease the sherry notes!
@thelondonwhiskyclub92006 жыл бұрын
Scott, I was at glenfarclas distillery couple of weeks ago. I believe 25 year might be third fill sherry cask rather than first matured in bourbon. I might be wrong but I am sure someone more knowledgeable will enlighten us. Good job dummies.

thanks London! another commented no bourbon casks but all 2nd 3rd and 4th fill sherry which decreases the sherry effect. Very well done!

Big Dog and I got our cask 3 & 4 coins (and pix) yesterday. (Very cool!) Big Dog pointed out that the #468 are the first three even nonprime numbers, and that divided by 2 equals 234. The #469 broken down become 2x2,2x3, and 3x3. Big Dog says that's how you make friends with a number. (He is a math guy!)

Distribution on Glenfarclas has fallen off everywhere I shop for some reason. I used to get the GF25 for $89, now it's $169+ if you can find it at all. As for detecting age, I usually get leather or "antique" notes in older Scotches.

It's amazing how Bart picked out the cherry menthol cough drop taste so quickly. It's one of those notes that always seems to stand out for people with Glenfarclas. Also, I'm always shocked when Bart talks about his grandkids. I keep thinking, "There's no way his boys are old enough for that." I keep forgetting you were married before and there's the possibility that your current wife had kids before, too. It takes a few moments for my brain to remember those possibilities. Anyway, great review guys.

I had the chance to get a 25 a few years ago (Pre-COVID-19) for about $175... instead, I picked up the 21 for about $130. I finished my 21 a few weeks ago and now the 21 is about $175 and the 25 is about $250. Still a great price for 2022, as a 25-year Macallan is about $2,600.00, and others 25 years (Ardbeg, Laphroaig) are about $1,200 and $600, respectively.
@foodquig6 жыл бұрын

Glenfarclas only uses 2nd and 3rd fill sherry hoggies. I know Glenfarclas uses mostly ex Oloroso hoggies, but there could be other types of sherry oak used and giving notability different notes to Oloroso notes. I tried a 20 year old Arran once and it tasted like it was matured in fresh Bourbon Barrels, 100% sherry.

For the age statements Glenfarclas use only Oloroso sherry casks. And I read that they use a lot of the big sherry butts, 500 liter ones. So their whisky age a bit slower than other distilleries. For me Glenfarclas comes alive when they get 15 years and older, the 12 year old is nice but I go for the 17 or 18 year old since the price is not so steep.
@ScotchTestDummies6 жыл бұрын
and several comments have said they are using 2nd 3rd and 4th fill sherry butts which would explain the lighter sherry notes.
@bedlamborn6 жыл бұрын

Wow, Bart thought it was a 12 yr. For me, it taste like a 15 yr. I have this bottle and paid about $150.. I was very disappointed. There is no bourbon cask involved, just sherry cask. To me its like they used a 3rd fill cask, not very complex at all for a 25 yr. This is why they justify the cost. I hear the 17 yr is good, but I'll try it in a bar first. Great review.
@ScotchTestDummies6 жыл бұрын
most of the Farclas is line is still pretty reasonable. The 12 is one of my fav 12 years.

I agree, all of the Farclas are well priced. Even the 40 yr and 1972 family cask we got in our store last year were a steal. But for a 25 yr, it fell short in taste for me.
