Glenfarclas Distillery - Making Whisky in the Valley of the Green Grass

There are distilleries in Scotland which are particular about how they do things, and then there’s Glenfarclas. This distillery has been owned by the Grant Family for five generations, who are scrupulous about their traditionally fired stills and unyielding on the fact that their whisky only matures in one cask for that duration of its life.
Glenfarclas holds a special esteem among whisky drinkers, and we are delighted to show this interview Callum Fraser the Distillery manager at Glenfarclas, to pick up some tips about what goes into making a whisky so rich in flavour and integrity.

Can anyone explain to me what he said from 14:20-14:55？It seems to stay in one cask would have better result than finished in another one ? Why was that ? Thank you for explanation. I am a Taiwanese in love with whisky.

Great video! Question: If Glenfarclas 105 is Cask Strength, how 8s it consistently 105 proof? Aren't there variations from cask to cask?

Thanks very much, it was a very enjoyable one to make, naturally! Your question really hits an intricate technicality, and I do not know what the exact answer is. Glenfarclas 105 is a very popular expression, and I imagine that casks of single malt are vatted together so that the whisky in the bottle is consistent across releases. How they also work it out to consistently hit 60%abv or 105 proof... that's a question for Glenfarclas!

I've heard they simply vat casks together until they end up at 60%. Abv too too low? Add another sherry butt at 62% to raise the abv of the vatting. For large batches like the 105 that seems doable to me...
