Glenfiddich 15 Single Malt Scotch. An Irishman's opinion #28

In this video I review the 15 year old single malt Solera vat Scotch from Glenfiddich.
On the Nose: Sweet and Sour are the dominant notes, Honey/ Candy with a hint of dried fruits from the cherry cask influence, slight spice with a sour malty note.
On the Palate: Much like the nose its a sweet and sour combination, a bit more honey/ toffee maybe the bourbon influence up front, giving way to apple sours, dried fruits and a liquorish finish. There is something aggressive and not quite integrated in the mix!

i say its like smelling nature and you get the smell of freshly cut grass. everything about this whiskey blends so well then theres this one note that stands out, it smells familiar but not like its natural. im more of a beer drinker and love my malty trappist ales so trying to learn more about whiskey. sweet and malt seems to be the key to my preferences here too. glenlivet has been my favourite so far but tempted to find a good double or even triple malt whiskey.

I’m a big fan of Glenfarclas 15 as well as their 105 although accept being punched with a Christmas cake isn’t for everybody. I liked the Glenfiddich 15 back when I was getting into whisky maybe 15 years ago or so, but perhaps wouldn’t be so impressed now having tried so many other things so your verdict makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the review it’s made me feel like giving this one another try to see how my palate has matured.

I took 12yr when it was on sale (Dunnes or Tesco, not sure) and i kinda liked it. Then, I found 15yr in Spain for only 5e more than 12yr (less then 12yr in ROI) - and I really liked it. Now i'm hooked up, waiting next week for 18yr and 21yr (+ "fire and cane" and "reserve cask" editions).

And here I was just thinking it's been a while since I've seen a video here! I haven't tried too many different scotch whiskeys that I liked. I enjoyed Johnnie Walker Black Label, Glenlivet Single Malt 12 year and Dewar's Blended 12 year. I tried one of the Laphroaig ones too a while back, but it was just too peaty for my taste.

Love the woodworking channel and now youre new whiskey shed, and as someone who has been sampling single malt scotch for many years I can recommend a couple for you to try. One of my current go to malts is The Dalmore at 15 years about £75 in the UK but this will blow the Glenfiddich out of the water. Also you should try Lagavulin at 16 years and Talisker at 16 years (Islay and Skye respectively). You can get these younger but no where near as good the extra few £/Euros is definatley worth it. If you are going to try a lowland malt then the one to go for is Rosebank again 16 years, this one may be difficult to track down depending where you are. If you're into history try Bowmore been going non stop since 1779 and Strathisla from 1786, but since Strathisla is the main base for the Chivers Regal blend it may difficult to find as a single malt. Happy sampling.

Would love your opinion on a good peaty whisky John. Laphroaig 10, Lagavulin 16 or Ardbeg 10. Completely different to any Irish Whiskey, even Connemara.

Could you review hyde no 9 irish whiskey ? It's similar to Bushmills 16 but better in my opinion and it costs less money

I know what you mean about this overly flavoured with Solera disappointing really a much better dram is the 18yrs old I got three minatures for £10 in Newry at Sainburys 12-14-18yrs old not a bad buy. I agree with you about the price of whiskey here in Ireland a scandal! Good review!

So will you be making further border incursions to buy more cheaper Whiskies? I would think the peated styles would great to see reviewed. An Islay malt or Ledaig (Mull) might be a good try. Currently on BenRiach Curiositas 10yo.
