@extremevideopro added for 900lbGorilla.... the GT-10 is also nearing the end of it's life cycle. The HD is in the beginning. Plus if you have an amp that only has line level FX loops you can run the HD using the four cable method without resorting to a line level shifter because of that line level/instrument level switch. It's the only floor unit I know of that has one.

That's a good question. You would have to look at the MIDI implementation chart to see if Tap Tempo has a CC message that can be sent.

@extremevideopro Just to clarify, the HD series doesn't have 10x the processing power--it's actually like 1.3x or 1.4x compared to the X3 if I recall correctly. What Line 6 has said is there's 10x the amount of information in the modeling. Looking forward to my HD500 arriving so I can put it to the test...

@gwugluud Let's take for instance the analogy of animation and HD animation, HD animation refers to a substantially higher rate in resolution than previous animations, in order to observe this you will need an HD enabled monitor. That is the same idea with the amp modelling, the amps were recorded with HD equipment in order to capture the sound in HD. Changing or adding Effects is like changing the lens of a Camera the lens doesn't effect the quality of the picture or whether it is in HD or not.

@extremevideopro yup that's what you said, but the manual seems to imply that both the left XLRs and left 1/4"s will output a live amp tone and both the right XLRs and right 1/4"s give a mic'd amp tone. notice mono appeared twice there. from what you said, it's more similar to what the pod x3 can do. we could send stereo signals into the mixer by XLRs and stereo signals to 2 amps via 1/4"s. i've double checked my pod x3 live manual section 7.5. the pod hd doesn't seem to do exactly this though.

Those tones are definitely in there. In fact Line 6 has a very good sounding Marshall Plexi they just came out with for the HD400

@gwugluud I think the videos on the Line6 website will explain my point. Otherwise I recommend you refer to a signal processing and electronics handbook when you take a look at the math of an fx pedal and dirt box you will see that there is no correspondence to the the sound output quality, all though a poorly designed signal processor may give a sound that is not aesthetically pleasing it is not necessarily bad quality. There is a difference in Modelling and processing. The amps were modeled.

being a multi-musician,a gun for hire as it were,i can tell you first hand that most of the songs thats played do not require distortion. in guitar work,whats expected is a enclyclopedic knowledge of chords, low key time and modulation effects. a lot af clean well define playing is the norm. no hiding behind overprocessed over loud noise. its good disipline good interpersonal skills and good playing that writes the checks

If you are looking for an "FX Only" board then I suggest you take a look at the HD500. It's better suited for that kind of application

HD if you need amp modeling, M9 if you just need effects. I use an M13 on my worship team. Great spacey verbs when we are in quiet worship and serious crunch tones when we get loud. The Hd's have all these effects in them you just can't pick the order or stack reverbs (except on the HD500). Since many contemporary worship songs are OD-Boost-Delay, you should be ok either way.

Incredible demo... I still think Line 6 should make a flat tuned power amplifier for their POD line. The idea of the DT50 is nice, but just the tube power section from it wrapped in a pretty little Line6 case would be even better. That way I could go from my Line6 Pod, to my Line6 power amp, into my Line6 cabinet (loaded with my own special blend of speakers, of course). It doesn't make sense to have a POD product and a Line6 cabinet...without having something to amplfy them both.

@extremevideopro You are so right, and here is the thing. I've listened to the Boss gt10, and I liked it, but it didn't really convince me. The distortion was too hairy and fuzzy, and I don't like that. When I heard the Line6, you could clearly hear a big difference. Someone suggested I give the Line6 a listen, and I did and they were right. I also Hear line6 pod, was actually first in amp modelling, and I didn't know that.

No it does not include recording software. You can download patch editing software from Line6 but you will have to get your own recording software. Reaper is an inexpensive yet very powerful recording software.

Yes just press hard on the toe position of the pedal. If you have it on carpet you will really have to pres very hard. On a hard floor though it comes on pretty easy.

@gwugluud effects and dirt boxes is signal processing, so the "hd" quality is dependent on the signal received. Thus, the effects and dirt boxes cannot be defined as high definition. It will be the same as to call an Intel Core i7 CPU a high definition processor... HD doesn't apply to effects and dirt boxes, or delays or any other type of signal processing

POD is the way to go. If you play in bigger settings with nice PA's then this is the bomb. I never carry an amp anywhere. Use the POD as an amp and run OD's and other junk into it and it sounds awesome. I Use a Fender Tele Deluxe '72 into an MXR Classic OD and Boss OD-3 into a POD X3 Live then direct out into PA... absolutely amazing. and sound guys will love you. haha

Keep in mind now the M9 is like having stomp boxes that you use with a real amplifier. It does not have the amp modeling that the HD units have. You would probably be better off with the HD500.

Hey Glenn...I liked your sound. Thanks for this video. I purchased POD HD400 recently and updated the firmware as well. I downloaded some patches from CustomTones and loaded those to my PHD but these downloaded patches sound louder than any other factory preset. Moreover, I can't hear most of the factory presets clearly even when my Amp volume level is way up. Please help me sort this out.

hey glenn, i think there is an error with the information with regards to the output mode at 4:30. the dual mode actually does this according tot he manual: routing the LIVE Mode signal to the left BALANCED and UNBALANCED outputs and a great sounding mic’d amp tone to the right outputs. This allows you to send a mono signal tailored for a guitar amp, while simultaneously routing a mono mic’d cab signal to a mixer or recorder this is different from what you said, which is what the X3 Live does.

@extremevideopro Hey Glenn, I've used your X3 patches which were great BTW. These X3 patches always had a comp after the amp. The tube comp in the HD comes closest IMO. I read that it's not really necessary anymore to put a comp behind the amp. Haven't tested it enough to have an opinion yet. So are you getting an HD500 soon. Hate the fact that I cant use your HD400 patches in the 500. I've downloaded the editor for the 400 to check how you've set these up. ;-)

Great demo, thanks! I was wondering if you could comment on how level matched the various amp sims are. The problem with the early PODS was that the volumes of the individual amp sims were all over the place. So it made it very difficult to use live because as you changed patches the overall output level of the unit changed. Even if you spent a lot of time trying to balance the level of your various patches it never seemed to carry over to the live scenario.

judging by pass gear release dates, BOSS should be announcing the next generation of the GT series at the January NAMM show... I'm waiting till then to decide between POD HD or GT-12( or whatever it's gonna be called?).

@beerkie88 Highly interesting. Modelled efx pedals and modelled dirt boxes cannot be made in "HD" versions, but modelled amps can. Hmm. I wonder why that would be? The more I think about that, the stranger it seems. If the quality of an efx processor is dependent only on the robustness of the signal received, then not only do I not need to buy this, but I could just install 1/4" instrument jacks on both ends of a potato, as long as the signal is good.

A question here : I'm using the VOX valvetronix VT30 amp...If i plug the HD400 in to my amp, i am using the amp modelling on my VOX amp or using the amp modelling in the HD400? I think its like the podXT right? Once i plugged the thing into my amp...i'm only using the speaker in my amp..the preamp of my amp is bypassed...using only all preamp modelling and EQ's in HD400..

Hi Glenn, great video... I was wondering if may be you can help me out. I brought a digitech rp500 about a year and a half ago. It was alright at first but now I sense it lacks "punch"... it sounds too digital and the distortions are weak. How would you compare this pod to digitech? Sadly, the music stores where I live don't carry pods so i would have to buy it online without trying it out, it's a gamble I know, that's why I want your advise... thanks!!

Hi glen. I am totally amazed by your knowledge and your effects. I have a question. I wanted to ask, which one would be the better option for me Hd 500 or Hd 400. I am a very basic user, want something that works for me live on stage and also for recording and jamming with the band. for live on stage I dont have an amp so I normally would plug the device directly into the PA system, so which one would give me a more consistent sound, in terms of volume settings, etc.
