This last segment teared me up somewhat. When people like Glenn and Jaqueline Du Pre are taken away from us so early the hole left behind can never be filled ever again. Jackie like Glenn were people from a different universe or heaven itself. Both were quiet humanitarians, unpretentious very smart and had a distinctive different trait that no one could keep up a folly to pretend they were naturally like this in life. Their uniqueness in personality was so very closely intertwined within their extraordinary musical abilities. I am a normal person with no real musical gifts except I hear sounds and like certain sounds a little more than other musicians I have worked with. I then go in search of these sounds almost like an obsession. If I had just 10% of Glenn or Jackie's talent then I would be overwhelmed with joy however I settle for just hard work to climb the next step of this very very long ladder. They left us their performances recorded and documented hopefully forever to inspire and leave us with much joy and wonderment forever. If there is an afterlife or heaven then I'm sure Glenn will be playing forever to inspire in heaven I'm sure. I hope one day to be able to sit a masterclass with him and Jackie to learn many things I find so very hard to master in the here and now.

I very much relate to what you are saying about having to climb the ladder the hard way one rung at a time. That is even more difficult when mobility or nerve issues get in the way of progress. Glenn had his own impediments and obstacles to overcome. Did you know that he had a scare at least a few times where he thought he wouldn't be able to play, due to his nerve issue? I am blessed with a similar problem, and my sympathy with how hard that must have been for such a gifted person like himself, helped me make it through. I did have a hard time, and maybe because of that I had some dreams where I got to hear him play. It is frustrating to not be able to play exactly what I heard, though. It is on my mind a lot, and I do try. I also shared the experience in my poems. I wrote about 100, and I am trying to find time to go back and edit them.

It was always obvious that he was a powerful mystic. His deep mysticism shines forth in his music, if possible even more today than when he was alive on this planet. He and all of his abilities and innate kindness are a lasting gift to this world and to the universe itself.

Very nice documentary. It was interesting to hear the 'Desir' by Alexander Scriabin (Op. 57, No. 1). I remember it from a VHS tape that I purchased at Harmony House Classical years ago. The full performance can be found on that VHS tape: The Glenn Gould Collection Part 16.

I’m pausing here at 19:50 to say, I don’t think Glenn took good care of himself in terms of diet and exercise. He was too busy striving to be “out of body”. That’s what made him Glenn Gould I suppose. But it would have been nice to have him around for another 25 or 30 years.

Dear Mr. Cross, I was just wondering what these people were referring to when talking about Gould as a philosopher. I am delighted to say that I have now read the entire essays collected in the Tim page volumes but if I recall correctly he only makes two passing remarks on Freud and Kierkegaard. (That they are both treated as salon figures in the same way as Schönberg by now) I assumed that had to do with him being humble and not wanting to interfere in "foreign" fields. Am I missing philosophical essays by him or is this just a difference in terminology

Having listened to the Bernstein / New York Philharmonic recording of 1961, I find that it stays in sync with the documentary, while the Karajan recording does not. Also, the woodwinds sound very different. So, I must agree with Katherine and Shazam, that it is Bernstein. Now, that said, it ought to have been the Karajan version, as we have all read of Gould's formative experience hearing Karajan rehearse it in 1957. Gould used the Karajan version for The Idea of North.

At 20:46, that's Gould's intense performance of Alfredo Casella: Ricercar sul nome BACH, Op.52 No.1 Funebre. After the exposition it skips ahead to the end, and we hear that final chord with all four notes of the motto.
