Bill Maher's number one problem is that he can't do introspection. whenever anyone challenges one of his core beliefs he just gets aggressive and shuts down
@Hy-jg8ow7 жыл бұрын
What "core beliefs" are you referring to? Because he is correct in saying that some people have a knee-jerk, thoughtless reaction towards anyone criticizing an ideology or doctrine as if that means hostility towards the primary victims of those ideologies or doctrines. Many people are not being nuanced enough to see that criticizing ideologies can be and should be separated from criticizing the people who are oppressed and manipulated by those ideologies being criticized.

Start calling drone strikes by their true name. It really does help. Because "drone strike" sounds like "police sting". Its something we need. Call it what it really is: Extra-judicial assassinations. To be quite precise, its actually extra-judicial executions in foreign countries. I dont know, instead of sounding cool and necessary, it sounds plain illegal. Its like torture and enhanced interrogation. So when you hear stuff like: "The US has been conducting drone strikes based on enhance interrogation results" it normalized it. When you say : "We murdered people based on information we tortured out of other people" it doenst sound like something legal.

Bill Maher's obsession w/ Islam and muslims as opposed to radicalism & state sponsors of extreme forms of Islam is odd. He's a new liberal for sure.
@1gadena7 жыл бұрын
Actually he's a real liberal on that issue. You cannot be a liberal and support the teachings of Islam the two beliefs and principles are completely opposed and contradict eachother show me a liberal Muslim and you will see they are suffering from a serious case of cognitive dissonance and they will show themselves to be neither a Muslim or a liberal . Islam is a even more authoritarian totalitarian oppressive conservative religion than Christianity yet so called liberals are happy to bash Christians for their backwards teachings and views yet give Islam a free pass even though Islams teachings are even more backwards and more oppressive than Christianity due to the fact that Christianity has been through a major reformation over the centuries and has adapted to the times and changed with western civilisation where as Islam has not. That is all he is saying and it is completely factual logical and reasonable. All ideologies are not equal and all religious ideologies are not equal and all religions are not equally as bad. Islam in its current form is the worst most oppressive religion in the world and no one should feel scared about challengingly its teachings just like we have challenged Christianity over the centuries and succeeded in forcing reformation. Christianity would never have been reformed if every time its teachings was challenged someone yelled Christianityaphobia! Only through debate discussion criticism and challenging its teachings did Christianity reform. Islam will never reform and adapt to western values and principles if so called liberals are afraid to challenge Islam for fear of being labelled ridiculous made up terms like Islamapobes. I am a athiest I have learnt about every religion and I can safely say I absolutely oppose Islam and its teachings and I'm not afraid to say it and challenge its teachings. A recent survey by the British government on British muslims (who are meant to be the moderate western muslims) 50 percent of those surveyed believe that being gay should be a crime and gays should be sent to prison. If you don't have a problem with that then you are not a liberal and if you defend those views you cannot say you are for LGBT rights. British Christians on the other hand have a problem with gay marriage but did not believe being gay should be illegal and that gays should be sent to prison. I hate the false equivalency of both are as bad as each other and both are against LGBT rights there is a big difference between not believing in gay marriage and believing that being gay should be made illegal one is obviously a lot worse than the other the two are not equally as bad.

***** lol I know but its really not the kind of subject that can be discussed in a few sentences.
@A867 жыл бұрын
@Maximus Desimus - You suffer from the same problem as Maher. The central foundation of Islam is the Five Pillars. That's it. Beyond that, it's up to interpretation, sect, denomination, etc. Some Muslim sects are basically hippies, like the mystic Sufi sect who are as liberal as Wiccans and get killed by Islamists like ISIS as "heretics". You're conflating radical conservative Islamism as *ALL OF ISLAM*, or acting as if their interpretation is the "true" interpretation which you can't prove any more than a Fundie Muslim could. Their interpretation is no more valid than liberal and progressive Muslims. There are plenty of Muslim Leftists like Malcolm X (he was a self-identified Muslim SOCIALIST), Mustafa Kemal Attaturk (the founder of modern Turkey), Keith Ellison, Majid Nawaz, etc. Islam is no more incompatible with Progressivism than Christianity or Judaism. As long as you don't have a conservative Fundie interpretation of the Koran and don't follow the regressive stuff in the Hadith (different sects of Islam differ on the Hadith, some sects don't view it as valid at all).
@A867 жыл бұрын
@Maximus Desimus - Keith Ellison is a Muslim and is pro-Gay Marriage, pro-Choice and pro-Transgender. There are organizations for LGBTQ Muslims. That's the problem with "New Atheists" like yourself. In your post you can somehow understand nuance when it comes to Christianity, even though anti-gay Christians are as prevalent the in the non-Western world as anti-gay Muslims and African Christians have "Kill the Gays" laws on the books, kill witches and South Africa has a huge problem with churches approving of "curing" Lesbians by raping them. But, you become curiously blind to nuance when it comes to Islam and treat it as a blank monolithic slab. As if Islam = inherently conservativ/regressive. It's no more inherently anti-gay or conservative than Christianity or Judaism is. To be honest, I think this bias is because many "New Atheists" see Christianity and Judaism as part of "Western civilization" and see Islam as "foreign" or "Eastern barbarism".
@1gadena7 жыл бұрын
A86 Here we go again. Please do not lecture me on Islam I have been taught about Islam all my life and have Muslim family members and my uncle is a apostate from Islam. I am not speaking from a position of ignorance but from a position of knowledge. Where did I say that being a liberal was compatible with Christianity? If you take what you want from a religion the good parts and leave what you don't want the bad parts it's fair to say you are not a follower of that religion and that's the cold hard truth to say otherwise is being completely illogical and delusional. my point about Christianity was getting the point across that the false equivalency between Islam and Christianity is just wrong and all religions are not equally as bad and of all the major religions Islam in its current form is the most incompatible with western values and principles especially liberal values and principles. You can call yourself a Muslim and Christian all you want but if you do not follow the teachings and you pick and choose what you want to follow you are Christian and Muslim in your own mind only and should not lecture non believers that Islam and Christianity is what ever you think it is and that it is up for each individuals interpretation because it is not. As I said a so called Christian liberal or Muslim liberal is neither liberal or Christian or liberal or Muslim they are neither just hypocrites. My comment was taking issue with the original poster that claiming Mahers views on Islam make him not a real liberal when in fact it is the original poster who is not the real liberal. The two ideologies are not compatible and contradictory like I said it's the definition of cognitive dissonance to hold two contradictory views at the same time to which for religious liberals there are many! And that silliness of mental gymnastics to justify their positions should not be pushed on us who are consistent and do not suffer from this delusion we are the real liberals. When it comes to religion Maher has it 100 percent right and is 100 percent liberal

I've never understood the fascination around Bill Mahr. He seems to have a niche audience of pessimistic atheists who like to see religious people (and just people in general) be bullied on television. I used to watch his show a lot and he never seems to add anything substantive to the conversation. His arguments never have a lot of nuance.

@puffball44847 жыл бұрын
I should have specified more. I mean he doesn't add anything to the conversation *at large*. Like the larger conversation about religions place in modern civilizations. And you actually brought up another point about Mahr's show that bugs me. He purposefully brings people on his show who are uneducated about the topics and have weak arguments, seemingly in an attempt to make himself seem more intelligent and thoughtful than he really is. Like why the fuck is Ben Affleck an authority on Islam?

Extreme religiosity to the point of theocracy is also a form of imperialism. Anti-imperialism and Atheism are not mutually exclusive ideas. There are real people who suffer in these totalitarian corners where it's 'believe what we believe or die' You can still point out the horrible things people within particular religions do (and critique the holy books that inspire them) without it being bigotry. Bill Maher (who I am not a fan of) is actually one of the few who is fairly nuanced on this issue. If you stifle moderate critics with valid concerns, then you get someone like Trump to fill the vacuum and "settle" things in their way.
@A867 жыл бұрын
I agree, but Bill DOES take it to the point of bigotry. Like trying to act like the fact that many Muslims in the Third World hold backwards views somehow implies Muslim Americans are the same way, or when he immediately sided against "Clock Boy" and said because other people have been treated worse than him, what happened to hom is acceptable. Bill is also a Zionist who is almost completely silent on Israel, openly likes Bibi Netanyahu and doesn't criticize Jewish Fundamentalism on Israel and AIPAC. He's a hypocrite just like Sam Harris who openly said he refuses to criticize Israel or Zionism.
@A867 жыл бұрын
jure hehe - And what do you mean that's how I lost? I'm not a Hillary supporter, I voted for Bernie, then Jill Stein. Your Zionist Hasbara is abundantly clear in your post, and it's rejected by even most Western nations. That's why Israel is on the UN's shit-list and why most European countries either condemn them or have very limited trade with Israel. Only Zionists and right-wingers in the US bother defending the Likud or the current Israeli government. The Likud is every bit as bad as Hamas and you're no better than an Islamist, sitting here defending radical Zionism. You're just supporting extremists of the opposite side. It's like trying to claim a moral high ground repudiating Nazis while defending Stalinists.
@chasajr7 жыл бұрын
HAHAHA! You saved me a shit load of typing, well put! I know Israel is not a member of any 'nuclear' weapons treaties or agreements but now I'm wondering if they are even a legit member of the UN, considering they're not a member of the UN Security Council. Sin is the bankers have their shadowy hands in every country, so Jews, Aussies, Americans, Russians, etc all get blamed for what government does at the behest of these criminal bankers in every country. I didn't see the culprit mentioned in this thread so I interjected the thought, nothing mentioned above moves without the grease - nothing...

"Extreme religiosity to the point of theocracy is also a form of imperialism." No, it isn't. Imperialism involves expansionism and colonialism. Iran is a theocracy, no doubt, but they stay within their own borders. "Anti-imperialism and Atheism are not mutually exclusive ideas." Who said they were? "There are real people who suffer in these totalitarian corners where it's 'believe what we believe or die' " Yep, and militarism has done wonders to bolster this form of extremism. "You can still point out the horrible things people within particular religions do (and critique the holy books that inspire them) without it being bigotry." It becomes bigotry when you focus on the religious text and say "A-ha! Religion caused this event!" while ignoring all the other factors that contribute to the event in question. If someone were to focus on, say someone's race as a manner of explaining, say, a crime they committed, while ignoring everything else that goes into the crime, it is, on its face bigotry. "Bill Maher (who I am not a fan of) is actually one of the few who is fairly nuanced on this issue." Bill Maher is definitely not nuanced. "If you stifle moderate critics with valid concerns, then you get someone like Trump to fill the vacuum and "settle" things in their way." 1- Trump's way to doing things isn't that different from Maher's. 2- Trump didn't get to power because Maher was stifled: fucker still has his shitty show, and they're part of the same phenomenon.

It's not purely a problem of tribalism. Righteousness is the root of all evil. Being 'above' others gives us license to mistreat them. An incredible misrepresentation of what Bill Maher says, especially in regards to his commentary on U.S. foreign politics and related actions, which certainly aren't this one-sided. As for his position to religious fanatism, concerning all religions, Mr. Greenwald, whom I've apparently respected a little too much, would be well advised to comment on Maher's actual arguments rather than delivering such a one-sided, out of depth, contents-free comparison. Am I the only one here that is a fan of both Greenwald/Maher and find areas of agreement and disagreement with each, or is that too much nuance to have? Of course US foreign policy contributes to radicalization but in this case, Glen is wrong about the connection, or lack of, between Islamic doctrine and terrorism, plus he misrepresents (strawman) Maher's position which is annoying. My views discussed here are somewhere between the Sam Harris "new atheist" camp and the Noam Chomsky "anti-imperialist" camp. It seems like people feel like they have to choose a side in this false dichotomy and dismiss the idea that two things can be true at the same time, but whatever.
@Hy-jg8ow7 жыл бұрын
People here are just another tribe while wailing about tribalism. People are angry at Maher for not being anti-establishment, or left enough, but then they can`t apparently imagine - or are unwilling to grant so - in their rage, that he may have correct ideas too, despite being also wrong on others. People do this all across the spectrum. And even turn around and accuse you of not being nuanced enough, while they mesh together doctrine-critique with racism with glee.

How can Sam Harris mainly be an apologist for Israel? I could count all the articles Sam Harris has written about Israel on one finger. Seriously, all he ever said was he doubts that if the Palestinians had the same strength and weaponry as Israel, that they would use it with as much restraint. I agree. Israel has killed more, but that doesn't mean Palestinians are morally better. It just means their weapons suck. If Israel wanted to conquer Palestine they could do it overnight. Hamas are the ones who won't even offer a real truce. "10 years then we'll go back to attacking you"? That's not a real deal. Hamas has consistently stated that any peace with Israel is only temporary and they ultimately want all of Israel to be turned into an Islamic state. Do you seriously think Israel wouldn't prefer to just drop the hostilities and have a peaceful neighbor? It's the Muslim world that can't stand infidels living in the holy land. Anti-semitism runs deep in the part of the world right now. Without it, this conflict would've been over long ago, if it even started in the first place.

It made me think of how many so-called liberals were going about how they respected people's rights to protest Trump until they committed minor offenses like blocking traffic on the road. Because, you know, ALL social progress has been made without having to be untoward and stoop to breaking the law.
@jirkazalabak15147 жыл бұрын
You have a very distorted view of the word protest. You get to express your own opinion, you just can´t do it on the expense of others. If you have somewhere to be, like most people do, you know, those with jobs to do, or schools to attend, you will not be very happy with some shitheads blocking your way. What they meant is that you don´t get the affection of the people for your cause by being an asshole about it.

nrrork By blocking roads, whatever message you're trying to convey gets lost. There's a way to make a point, and there's a way to make yourself look silly.

I think the combination of these two people in this kind of video is pretty amazing. Jimmy, a pretty acerbic and self-described 'dumb-guy' comedian with Glenn Greenwald, arguably fast-becoming the most important intellectual on the planet. Its like a great thing we can thank the internet for. An interesting way of reporting on political trends. Nice work Jimmy! Keep it up bro!

There is a difference between a Muslim who commits a horrible act but his act was not driven or motivated by his religious ideology and a Muslim who commits a horrible act in the name of his religious ideology which motivated his attack. The same applies to Christians. I still don't understand how you don't understand this?? The only people regularly all over the world and mostly in the Middle East and Africa committing heinous acts in the name of their religious ideology is Islamic extremists where their extreme Islamic ideology was the motivating reason for the acts of terror. You can't say a Christian guy murdered someone or a Muslim guy murdered someone for reasons not to do with their ideology that's just murder and doesn't have anything to do with their religious ideology but if a Christian and Muslim guy murder someone in the name of their ideology motivated by their ideology that is a act of terrorism. Muslims are the biggest victims of Islamic extremists as they are blown up killed kidnapped tortured every single day in huge numbers across the Middle East and North Africa by groups such as ISIS AlQaida. Your comment is why us liberals get a bad name your view is completely illogical
@RealJackHQ7 жыл бұрын
Maximus Desimus Still, it does not show me that one religion is more heinous than the other. Why do people commit suicide? Gee, I dunno, maybe it has something to do with getting out of their real life and entering heaven because they are depressed, and the idea of heaven and paradise has to do with religion regardless of type, now doesn't it?

Hey Glenn, atheists are not "tribal". They simply have not been convinced by religious dogma. It's not a belief system, it's the lack of a belief system. In the case of Islam, the doctrine is used as justification for objectively horrible atrocities. Can't you see that? We must criticize ridiculous religious beliefs in the same way that we criticize ridiculous political beliefs. Just because someone sincerely holds a religious belief shouldn't make it immune from criticism. The United States SHOULD fight against those who want to impose sharia law. I say all of this as a progressive. In my opinion, the progressive platform should be spreading democratic values and fighting against religious dogma, especially dogma which is objectively illogical and dangerous.
