I took classes with Glen Vilpu so long ago. Years later, I realized I had been taught by a classical artist, and finding another one like him is so rare these days. He would tell us stories about his drawing classes in Italy, he would do workshops there yearly. He also would share stories about his years as a young artist, and the approach to art in 1950's, 1960's, etc. I was so young and felt so shy sitting next to working artists and working animators from Disney. I felt everyone was so incredible, them in their 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. I was in my early 20's and really didn't give myself the credit for even being insightful enough to have chosen to study under a great contemporary 'classical artist.' Just look how gently he glides the pencil on the paper. He made pencil strokes feel like skating on paper. Just fun and gentle pencil strokes! It was all about the spirit of the gesture and the emotion in the movement. The spirit of the pose. That was at the Animation Academy in North Hollywood. Where the classes I took took place. Those were the animation years before animation left the country. Imagine outsourcing art! However, art is in our hearts and never leaves our minds and souls. An artist is always an artist as a rose is a rose...

Vilppu made me become a true artist. He was the first instructor I've come in contact with, he made me realize that my art is not just made to show off to friends, it's literally a way of life.
@PenandBlade7 жыл бұрын
+MyArtJourney dang man, I'd love to hear more about what you mean by it being a way of life? Sounds interesting
@ColoredMud7 жыл бұрын
Lol well what I mean is drawing is now something that I incorporate in everything I do, I'm always thinking of drawing and the artistic principles in my daily life; like wherever I go I can't help but try and deconstruct what that movie director was envisioning, or what that piece of music is trying to convey. Just the idea of us artists being able to incorporate our philosophy into what we create is a never ending fascination to me. I can say since I started studying art I feel that I'm becoming more aware to what's around me, and I can appreciate much more than I could before. Comparing this to my childhood state in which I copied art to gain approval and attention. Honestly if I could go back in time I'd kick my former self in the rear! XD But yeah Glenn Vilppu really opened up my perspective and for that, I am forever grateful. :)

+MyArtJourney ahh yes! I know what you mean man. I do the same when it comes to movies and such, which I think gives me a deeper enjoyment of them... but sometimes I like to turn that part of my brain off and not analyze them too much too haha

For anyone confused about copying vs analyzing, check out Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters by Robert Beverly Hale. Why analyze vs copy? Because every detail is not of equal value, and drawing something photographically does not necessarily make for a good drawing. Some artists like to interpret the figure as simple 3d forms, rather than just copying lines and flat shapes. Sometimes shadows fall on a figure in a way that doesn't accentuate the form. Or perhaps a cast shadow falls in a weird place, so you remove it. Maybe there's something a distracting area of high contrast going on with the feet, but you want your viewer to focus on the face, so you play down the contrast. When you analyze, you gain the power to create your own figures with simple shapes, turn those figures in space, and light those figures. You can draw the viewers eye where you want. If you just copy, you remain a slave to reference. You will get very good at copying, but likely lack the ability to create your own figures

This man along with Karl Gnass & Jeff Watts make up some of the most inspirational & informative artist I have ever come to be exposed to, the way they disseminate logic through demonstration is in of it'self an art form. I am unimaginably grateful every time I stumble upon a new piece of free information, that they've come to share; thank you for uploading this.

Yea it was quite cool meeting him (and other great artists) at CTNx. Glenn was so kind as to take the time to personally answer my questions, demonstrate his technique, and let me video tape him as well! Righteous.

I always loved his way of approaching drawing, so simple yet deep. A pitty it is so hard to get any material about him or his ways here in south america. YEt I have learned a lot about the true importance of gesture just watching small videos like these :)

You build a figure the same way you start a puzzle or when you play with legos. Same concept, you start small then build up. The gesture is your base and the forms are second. But never forget to tell a story with the gesture, you don't want stiff poses. I always found it tough to explain it to people but using Legos as a example makes the most sense. It always seems complicated when you see the finished product but it really isn't.

When you do figure drawings, you're also building up a library of information yo draw from. He explains that you're not supposed to copy the figure. You learn from the figure and draw from what youve learned. So you can draw from what youve learned without a figure there.
@eleanorvilppu27997 жыл бұрын
Glenn Vilppu os always analyzing rather than copying when he is working from the model. This gives him an understanding that gives him the ability to draw from imagination. This is also what he teaches you to do. vilppuacademy.com
