I found his manner of speaking even more appealing than that of Leonard Bernstein - Gould was a most attractive character and yes, I have read about his life, which is at discord with my comments here; but here I am experiencing him "in person" and I am discarding a lot of what I have read about him. His brilliant musicianship takes precedence.

Exercise&Relax Amazon had Mozart in the Jungle for four seasons. Dramatically spotty as it may have been, it featured music rarely, if ever, heard these days on TV. Some episodes were surprisingly good, even inspired. There was one episode with an Olivier Messiaen concert at Rikers Island that was stunningly done and quite moving. But, sadly no, there is very little serious music in the TV of today.

He flattered our intelligence and it was so much more riveting to attend to because of it. Thanks, Glenn.

@smartingamerica
@smartingamerica 5 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Gould could speak as seamlessly as he performed. This man was a being invested with an exceedingly rare ability to concentrate far beyond the common fold. He wasn't merely delivering the composition as an auditory responsibility to the recipient listening audience. His performing behavior was NOT an 'act'. He utterly subsumed himself in a work as he executed it. Gould's mind penetrated far beyond the common pedestrian conceit of what constitutes music-making, transcending fashionable claims of 'identifying with it' to actually BECOMING the music in his mind with all his senses synesthesically engaged in its blossoming. One can appreciate that he was literally 'seeing' it. He understood why creativity in music and the arts is tantamount to 'creative lying': it is the potent means by which the mind can literally 'realize' the elaborate abstract conceptual models it constructs...and the hopeful means by which an audience, otherwise typically exposed to the chronic inflammations of what is deemed 'popular' by the captains of industrial profit-making, may obtain at least a brief glimpse from the refreshing viewpoint of genius.

What Gould says at the beginning is I think the most profound statement I've ever heard about artists in general, as well as about Beethoven. Gould is so exactly this type of artist he is describing - a museum curator at odds with an inventor, and he is by far my favorite of all pianists I have ever heard. I can expect greatness and even perfection from many others, Horowitz, Argerich, Uchida, Brendel, Richter, and particularly Pollini, but Gould goes further - I do not know what I can expect with one of his recordings, except that he may show me something in the music that I had never before considered, and by doing so rewrite my perception of it entirely. Maybe even to go so far as to give the piece a completely new form of being - even if it be far away from the composers intent, it is an extremely rich and important exercise that opens up the music on the sheet, and makes you really consider what each note is there for, what each note does and COULD have done. I think that way you can attain an even deeper understanding of the art. What can these notes do if we change these parts in this manner? How does that change the piece? How then, does that inform you about what the piece is trying to do, to convey? I think its such a bold thing to take canonical performances of important pieces and say "I'm going to do it completely differently".

"There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone." Gould's tone and manner of speaking struck me as being somewhat similar to Rod Serling's, which makes sense considering they were both creative geniuses in their respective fields. But the above quote is also apt in the sense that Gould's artistry lied in the capaciousness of his imagination, in regards to his interpretations of Beethoven’s work. A truly remarkable human being.

Not a coincidence why Glenn Gould was chosen from director Lars von Trier at his last movie “The House That Jack Built” as one of the greatest among others...same with other personalities in different areas ♥️🎶

There are many "good", some "better", while "best" is subjective. To me there are no best. But there are a handful of wirld's landmark performances - those that are the maximum ever accomplished and documented, that each next best performance to be compared to. Even if not intentionally. For this sonata this is the undoubted landmark performance. Everything that can possibly be said or wished for - Gould owns it here. What he did here is not play "La Tempesta" - it's literally bring to life "La Tempesta". And that's a different level of musicienship and artistry. One that doesn't exist any more.

What effortless precision! He never over emotes. I get the feeling that he’s the conductor, conducting himself, who’s not even playing. But actually hearing the music itself, play itself. Just amazing. I had only listened to him play Bach.

Listen to his recording of Scriabin's 5th Sonata. Sober, without the hysteria often heard in Scriabin, clear, clean like his Bach, yet spectacular as only Gould could deliver.

I'm not sure what you would consider emoting, but I personally can't tell what's more expressive... the looks on his face, or his subtle humming accompaniments!
