Glennis has said in an interview a while back that she actually thought that she had messed this up! She was very nervous because Xander, the composer and original singer of this song, was there. She was really insecure and thought she had done a bad job the moment she was finished singing. So when the reaction of the other singers were very,very positive, she was completely blown away and became emotional. Imagine that!!

Hey Nephi, as always, great reaction. Here's some more info about this track. In 1998 the Dutch band Volumia scored with "Afscheid", a number 4 hit in the Dutch charts. The song is written by Xander de Buisonjé leadsinger of the band. (the black haired guy at 0.45 secs in this video)He wrote this because his former girlfriend had to leave for a hotel internship, and Xander would rather not have her to leave. Then in 2011 Glennis Grace performed the song in the Dutch music show "De Beste Zangers van Nederland" (Best Dutch Singers), Glennis' rendition of the song was received so well that it became her first number One hit in the Dutch charts. The song (in short) is about a lover having to leave because he/she is getting a chance of a lifetime elsewhere, and the singer (in this case Glennis), doesn't want to stand in their way. Nephi, during the video you were wondering how we produce that sound? It's the sound that comes out when we pronounce words that have the letters 'g' or 'ch' in them. You produce the gutteral sound like when you have a fishbone stuck in your throat and you need to get it out. You basically close your throat with the back of your tongue and then push air through it. For us Dutchies it's a normal thing, but I can see that it'd sound weird for others ;-)

The song was not written with a female vocalist in mind. It blows me away that she belts out the F5 or G5 on the first "Nee" at all. Still, in the original version, the (male!) singer needs to hit the high "Nee" again (which is so much easier for a tenor), but she chooses not to, likely because the strain on her voice and the risk in that moment would be tremendous. Wise choice imho, as it doesn't detract from the song, and/or her beautiful interpretation. Still even Glennis is picking her battles here! And the "g" is very prominent even on Dutch ears in this song. There's nothing wrong with it, but it is a regional variation (that fits this interpretation!). Still, Dutch singers often pronounce the "g" a little more softly, but girl is from Amsterdam and belting her heart out, so she won't hold back in this moment, not even on the g! All this is meant as clarification. I am in awe of her, I love this live version and could never do what she does. Beautiful song and performance!
